Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

How about this–anyone wanting to carry a gun needs to get permission and a license. Your weapon will be checked once a year to make sure it's still in your possession. If a crime is committed using a gun that you owned/ hadcontrol over, you are held responsible?

The first part of your rant is already a law... do your research and get some education on the topic before you get all high and mighty

    You can't ban innovation.

If guns are banned, people will just find more novel ways to kill each other.

Now Let's see hoe US media including CNN reports this story compare to Arizona Shooting. CNN reporting has given advantage to Obama for doing nothing.

when i went to high school almost every pick up had a gun rack with rifles. none of us every shot each other. why? because we were held responsible for our actions! the shooter in tuscon has a serious mental illness just like the person who shot john lennon and ronald reagan. we need better mental health care in this country. not gun control. also you cannot compare us to england etc for safety. 2 reasons:there are no wild animals there to possibly have to defend one's self from. yes some people in america actually hunt to feed their children instead of being on the govt dole. also even without guns in england those crazy muslim extremest are exploding home made bombs all the time.i will take my chances here in gun land. the reason our country is screwed right now is because we took jesus out of the schools etc. oh and by the way i am not a republican nor do i own a gun nor would i ever vote for palin. she cant even run her own household much less a nation.

They keep asking on CNN about metal detectors at the school. If they had metal detectors, every kid would be stopped due to metal in their backpacks. Spiral bound notebooks, 3 ring binders, hole punches, pencil sharpeners, coins, cell phones, etc...they all have metal that would often give false positives. Do you really expect the school to staff to potentially search 3000 backpacks every morning when the bell rings?

Rich, that's not how metal detectors work. They can be calibrated, filtering out such small things. Take airports for example. They're designed to ignore zippers and buttons on your pants, or your watch. Metal fillings in your teeth. The list goes on. A scanner with a visual display, again like in airports, would be helpful, but expensive. What's worse, that the US is a country where this is necessary. Too many damn guns in circulation and accessible to children, crazies, and right-wing extremists.

No but I expect California could pass a law requiring all school supplies to not be made of metal. It is common sense that only licensed teachers should possess pencil sharpers. You know California has passed laws requiring something to be done even when science does not know how to yet do it.

Oh good lets have the same stale arguments we've been having for the last 300 years. I'm sure the points each of you are making will change the minds of everyone who reads them. Let's just give it a rest...there is no point arguing on these comment boards.

So are we going to report every shooting in America now?? Maybe they should have news stories on all the drive-by shootings that occur in an evening in South Central, CA.

This didn't really happen. The student had to break so many laws to do this. He had to have taken the gun on school grounds(impossible since California schools are gun free zones), been a minor in possession of a firearm, etc. California won't even sell guns that haven't passed the drop test(the gun must not discharge after being dropped from 1m). Oh yeah, I forgot that people can chose not to follow the law. I guess adding more laws will solve the problem though...

No actually guns do kill people. They are a machine designed solely for that purpose – to kill. Automobiles aren't designed to kill. Alcohol isn'r designed to kill. Although I personally wouldn't mind seeing alcohol outlawed along with guns.

People like you hold no accountability for the person by the vehicle (no i dont mean automobile, this word has many definitions) in which such things occur.

Alcohol kills far more people how bout you go rant about that or how about tobacco thats a good one. The sheeple of America are educated or better yet uneducated and dumbed down like clock work.

I have guns made for shooting paper targets and for shooting small game animals. I don't shoot people, I stopped shooting animals, so I just shoot paper targets. But if a criminal shows up at my house asking for my money or my life I am not going to be like Jack Benny and say "I am thinking, I am thinking". That is what the Glock is far.

haha know what you are saying Pumbaa. I dont hunt though. My guns only go to the gun range and back home. My next gun is going to be a glock (or maybe an AR or beretta depending on whatever is being sold for the best price when I find one lol)

I heard it was a black boy. I wonder where the father is? I would bet he is from a single mom family with 9 siblings from 9 different sleep around men. Probably on welfare. The problem with America is we have lost family values. Come on people, one day after MLK, is this what the doctor wanted for blacks.

What family values? "Family Guy" on Fox TV? Even Hollywood stars have kids without bothering to get married. There is no shame. There is no shame in being on welfare instead of working for a living. Then there is the 50% divorce rate. People think nothing about promising to their partner and to God that they will love and cherish each other for life.

How are these kids getting guns, we need stiffer penalties for kids bringing guns to school. They say it was an accidental shooting, if he had not brought the gun to school, nobody would have been accidently shot.

And from the fog comes the Meek; the Constant barrage of mediocrocism. The masses plead for more... churning their innards to the dust of mindsweet Jungle prowess. And with their head lifted they heard it clear as day:
