Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Does anyone really think that a law will prevent a criminal from possessing a gun? By definition, criminals don't follow laws. Gun laws only harm law abiding citizens, making them unarmed targets. Answer: severly stiffer penalties when a gun is used in any harmful or threatening manner. I wish guns could be made to not exist, but that is not our reality.

Look at cities that have gun bans in place and look at the violent crime stats. Criminals know that if a gun ban is in place they don't have anything to worry about by breaking into your home while your there, because they will have a gun and you can't and don't have a gun. If you believe in strict gun laws, then move to one of those cities. If you live in my city, I'll put a sign in my yard telling everyone you don't have a gun and that I do. I find that liberals who don't want anybody to have a gun, don't want anybody to have any rights.

This story is ridiculous! There is no way that dropping a backpack would make a gun go of 3 TIMES!! Did he have like a semi-automatic gun or something?! I hope that person goes to jail for a very long time.

  10. crazy people!

This is insane! It is fully within our rights in this country to own a firearm. Just because a few people are idiots should not change the rights of the perfectly normal people.

Making guns illegal will not solve anything. If someone is set on getting one, then they will find a way to get one. Do you think that the prohibition of alcohol really stopped people from imbibing? No, that is how bootleggers came about. Our judicial system needs to enforce the laws and not just give a slap on the hand. Same goes with murderers, rapists..and so on. They need to set an example so people realize that no matter what the situation, you break the law then you will be punished. Our judicial system is ridiculous. Few guys that went to my high school beat and shot someone to death and they got 5-11 yrs. Ended up being shorter with good behavior..How is that upholding the law???

How is 5-11 and shorter due to good behavior a reflection on the judicial system? I'm not saying it isn't. I'm saying you didn't make your case.

Then just ban knives. They're designed to kill efficiently. And martial arts schools (eastern and western). And wrestling channels, since they encourage violence. And pencils. Mustn't forget how sharp the darned things are. Oh, oh and maybe computers, because they can be hurtled with great efficiency for causing damage. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. The issue is not that guns are designed for killing people. They're not. They're designed to efficiently punch holes in things, you extreme left-wing idiots. It's the intent (or negligence in this case) that gets people hurt. And, even then the morality of that issue is two-fold: I'd want to kill someone efficiently (with a gun) if that someone was trying to hurt my family. So, please. Just think about things before you go jumping on some bandwagon. As docserveralson suggested, we are what we think about. If we think about and glorify violence, then we'll be ready to act on it. If, on the other hand, we think about safety and helping one another, you COULD give a civilian a nuke or two, and the world would be a better place because of it.
