Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

I have schizophrenia and I had a gun when I was 18-22 years old. I was Manic and should not have had such a weapon at all. I have been an advocate of mental illness and most are responsive to treatmen, but if I or others are not responsive I wonder what would happen in todays world.

F.Y.I. If the assualt weapons ban was in place that would not have mattered those high capacity mags are still avaialable to purchase. Any firearm that was sold during that period only came with 10 round magazines. if you wanted a higer capacity mag they are still avilable for sale through various means.

I've been following this story on the local news and they said the boy brought the gun to school in his backpack. While in his classroom he slammed down his backpack and the gun discharged hitting two students. The two injured were 15 and 16, one boy and one girl. One student was grazed on the arm and the other was hit in the head with one in serious condition and the other in critical

The coverage of this incident is horrible. Some news sources are saying three kids shot, other news sources are reporting only two. And the details are a bit sketchy too. The gun "accidentally" went off... Twice? Because it was dropped... Twice? C'mon we are not complete idiots. Guns can be dropped without going off. To me it just seems like the media is trying to spin up a story.

Regarding guns... Banning them is extreme. Having sensible laws that keep guns out of crazy people's hands, like Loughner, and closing the loophole at gunshows (people able to buy guns without background check) makes sense. Assault weapons are another matter. Their only use is to kill humans. Why should a civilian need one? Pistols, rifles, shotguns, isn't that enough? Here in Canada our gun laws are way too restrictive, so I'd never suggest that, but something needs to be done. The status quo ain't doin' it.

lol at "loophole" It's called a PRIVATE SALE. You have to pass a background check at a gun show. They still call it into the FBI. You can buy a gun though a PRIVATE SALE from any other citizen. Nothing new or loopholeish about it.

You're supposed to go to school to learn, not shoot people. If the kids were actualy paying attention in class, they would learn how to speak proper english. For example lets take the word ( ASK ) please note the ( S ) comes before the ( K ). Or the word ( THEIR ) it is not pronounced ( DAY ), ( THIS ) is not pronounced ( DIS ) Thank you !!!!!!!

It's because the guns are too entrenched into your society that you can not give up your guns out of fear.

The fascination with your bill of rights on guns is the key. It's needs amendments to it.
