Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

How is this 'accidental?' The moob that brought the weapon to school, in spite of the fact that such an act is forbidden, is the cause of the incident.

People are really stupid in America! They argue well then lets ban knoves and bats , etc. etc.

These things are used for other things on a daily basis. Guns are only used to injure when you are not a man enough to do it with your fists.

Well ... there certainly is at least one stupid person here ... you. I'm all for allowing anyone to possess a "knove".

I think they should legalize hand grenades too. Every child should have an iron pineapple in their lunch pale.

Really an accident? I don't think the student bring the gun to school in the first place was an 'accident'. If they had searched in the first place.... what was he going to say "ooops... its not supposed to be there, it was an 'accident'!"

The potential success of gun control laws is evident in this article: California law forbids carrying a concealed weapon without one having a permit to do so and permits are not issued to minors – does not permit minors to own such weapons so this one must have been stolen – bans the carrying of a weapon in, or in the vicinity of, a school. The law failed to protect in this case due to good intentions but a lack of preemptive enforcement.

A little common sense could go a long way in this matter. A well-regulated militia… think well trained and licensed adults with rifles… there is no valid reason for private ownership of automatic weapons or hand guns except in those extreme cases where a concealed weapon is actually indicated.
Rational regulations can be achieved without hysterical over reaction from both left and right. Be reasonable.

Accidential...? What other reason would the student have to bring a gun to a school without the intention of killing others....

Are you guys billybob, happygun and the rest of you really serious in what you write. Can't you see that its is access to guns and its free availability in the market the reason that we see gun crime. Otherwise it would have been knives or such(as in China) which would not have caused so many deaths.
If we all had guns strapped on and came across a Loughner in the supermarket and started shooting him do you think a third person may not shoot you thinking you are an accomplice. Its not easy. The gun lobby is strong and they do influence our opinion. Do you want to go back to the time when we had to wear a gun and be good at it to be respected in the community.
I guess you will not see it. People in other westernised and developed countries do live without guns.
    Wake up America. Be real.
Do not let the others think we are fools who do not see the reason for these crimes. ITS THE AVAILABILITY OF GUNS.

If that were true, why are vast majority of gun crimes committed with ILLEGAL GUNS?

Yep, cause if someone has enough hate in their heart that they are going to kill someone, a gun is the only way to do that.

It will be a great day in America when everyone that owns a gun wakes up on the same day and shots themselves.

Do non-gun owners have any rights? The gun nuts always whine and cry about their rights as if they're the only people in society. What about the rest of us. Do we have the right to being safe in public? When is Obama going to step up and call for tough gun control? When is the public going to demand tough gun control? Screw the NRA.

How is this deemed accidental the hild should never have had a gun in the first place. Parents check your children's packs before they leave!!

We know guns are not going to be banned but please ban the assault weapons. What do you need them for unless u are going to Afghanistan. I don't know why the gangs and people can get access to these without us knowing or stopping them getting into their hands. Once u arrest these trigger men with these weapons do you not find out the sources of access.

What do you mean an "accidental shooting" ? The kid brought a LOADED GUN to school in his backpack. Why do you think he did that? Was he planning to use it as a model in his English class? I think NOT. People, wake up. There is only one reason a kid brings a loaded gun to school and it's not for "show and tell." He is as guilty of the shooting as if he pulled the gun out of his backpack, took aim, and fired the weapon intentionally. Zero tolerance.

@ tarheel I totally agree. This is no accidental shooting. The only accident was that it went off unexpectedly!
