Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Put the parents in jail, put the kid in a program, and fire the security guard at the school who supposedly "wanded" the kid as he entered campus this morning. He obviously missed a gun.

Stricter gun laws to prevent murders are just hedge laws. I agree with the folks here who say gun owners need proper gun training to obtain a license and to buy a gun. I am not a gun fan and I don't own a gun nor will I own a gun, but that doesn't mean I'm going to forbid another from owning a gun if they choose to. We are quick to put band-aids on our problems instead of getting to the root of the problem.

OR if another person would have been performing the social responsibility of carrying a concealed weapon, the shooter could have been put down before he got off 30 shots.

A gun in hand always beats a cop 5 minutes away. And all the talk about banning guns? Really? So basically a drug war (which has not worked for 50 years) on guns? Yea, that would work.Hey you don't like them in your State...fine! Go ahead and have your government ban the guns; and then get on your knees (as subjects should) and plead to the government for more cops. Just don't come runnin to my State when your's is broke. PLEASE.

I do not live in fear so much that I have to get on my knees and beg the government for everything; including my protection. I am a responsible gun owner and should such an event happen that were to put my family in harm's way; I choose not to be a victim. When was the last time you saw a cop stop any crime? They are only their to draw the chalk lines around you and your family's bodies.

PS-The textbooks can tell you what the government wants the textbook to teach you. The American Revolution was NOT about taxation without representation....The revolt did not begin until the British tried taking away their guns.

How come the same people who love guns love the baby jeebuss? Baby Jeebuss didn't have a gun, neither did baby Jeebusses mommy or earth daddy. The 3 wisemen brought silver and gold and myrh and incense, not pistols and ammo and extended magazines. Why do Jeebuss loves also love guns? Me no get it.

I hate to tell you this but evidently you don't know that guns were not invented when Jesus lived. He did tell his disciples if they did not own a sword to go out and buy one. If he had more swords and more disciples trained to use them then Jesus would not have been killed by the Romans.

Obviously the answer to such problems is reducing gun regulations and giving easier access to gun ownership to everyone, since as we know only by having everyone armed can we tackle the problem of injury and death from accidental discharging of firearms.
Or we can just admit that guns do kill people.

would be nice to know the gun make, most guns have drop safeties so duffuses like this can't hurt themselves and others when they drop them. besides it is against the law to take a gun onto school property, why was that being ignored. try him for attempted murder since he had it on school property and if you carry a gun you plan to use it. therefore I see it as a murder case.

guns are made with the solely purpose to kill people. hammers, bats, knives, etc are not. .....carrying a gun means that the person is willing and ready to kill. that would be difficult to say about a baseball bat.........

"(CNN) - A 14-year-old South Carolina boy used the rifle his father bought him as a birthday present to shoot the man to death, along with a great-aunt, and critically wound his grandmother, police said Tuesday."

Are not guns are just the greatest things?

a person can kill thousands at a time with the right powder, and access to an ac airvent... this is a stupid arguement... Besides, obummer can't afford to take the gun lobby on as well as everything else right now – moan all you want – the small 20% of liberals in the US is no longer obummers high focus.

What do you mean an "accident"? The kid brought a LOADED GUN to school !! I don't know, but I feel certain it was not for "show and tell." The bottom line is this – if there had not placed a loaded gun in his backpack, there would not have been a shooting. The gun accidentally discharging when he dropped the backpack doesn't wash. He is as guilty of the shooting as if he had retrieved the gun from his backpack, taken aim, and pulled the trigger intentionally. When will people learn (that includes kids too) that there are consequences to pay for the bad decisions that we make today? GUNS IN OUR SCHOOLS = ZERO TOLERANCE.
