Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Has anyone thought about banning Kids! Hello...problem solved. Plus you solve the overcrowding problem in schools, and all the nightmares about raising kids. Just think how much simpler life would be without kids.

Fine lesson in gun safety never chamber a round in your pistol....... Another fine lesson in gun safety if the gun belongs to the kids parent and was improperly secured..... Parent is gonna get strung up and hung out to dry........ That being said the kid was probably just some little hoodlum wanting to act all big and tough...... I blame the music industry and the whole surrounding culture

If you bring a gun to school and it goes off it is not an accident. I resent the term accident used. I don't care what police call it send this kid to jail for a long time. He is more culpable than the mentally ill kid in Tucson.

    I am all for guns.
I am totally against idiots with guns.
Only an idiot brings a gun to school... and even if he made that mistake, it shouldn't have had a round chambered, ready to fire.

Guns aren't the problem here... just one idiots mistakes.
If this kid would have just left his gun at home like an intelligent human being, two innocent people would not have been affected.

I'm all for responsible gun ownership and all but in light of recent events I'm starting to think that 1) Only idiots and the mentally ill have guns and 2) We need to go the way of most of Europe and ban gun ownership altogether. The amount of gun related deaths at the hands of fanatics, psychotics and simpletons (this case in point) is starting to outweigh "responsible" gun ownership.
(hateful comments from NRA members calling me a communist and socialist are below...)

I am sick of the "guns need to be banned statement." I am a responsible gun owner and have a permit to carry a concealed firearm. I carry a pistol with me at all times, have for a long time, and have NEVER had to use it or even pull it out to this day. If guns were banned, people like myself and others would not be aloud to own a gun, therefore we couldn't protect ourselves from the criminals that acquire guns illegally and don't care that they are banned. Look at Mexico, one of the toughest gun law country's in the world, but the criminals have more firepower than the police. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

  10. Are you serious?

knife, ropes, etc... cant kill 3 and wound 13 from 200 feet away? So that is why we ban guns? Are you really serious? By that logic, we ban all commercial jets. I remember 3 that killed a whole bunch of people on a fall morning in Sept. And they were taken over by box cutters.

This isnt about guns, its about responsibility, intelligence and more than just a little common sense.

I think alot of the shootings that are happening are because of the parents letting their children play violent video games and not giving them enough attention...there for the parents are to blame..

These replies, in themselves, show where the problem originates. Look at how many snide, nasty, smart-azz, hateful, and polarizing comments there are. Really. It only takes ONE person out of all of these voices to get angry or decide to take an action and other people will suffer for it. It only take ONE of you to act out in a violent way to impact someone else's life forever. Of course, what would that one person care? They got their way, right? Doesn't matter what you or I might think.

Right now, our country is sick to its core. We all see it and feel it. Again, the comments here SHOW it. We all feel that there is "something wrong" going on but seem pretty damn helpless to stop it. We COULD stop it and change, but nah, we'd rather fight with each other. Our Congress is a perfect representation of who were are as a people. I know, you're thinking, "No way, they don't represent me." Sure they do! All the greed, the corruption, the power-grabs, the fighting, the unwillingness to move on an idea, the vitriol, the anger and resentment. We didn't elect people to run the country smoothly. We elected the "Jersey Shore" cast. Instead of working together to try and improve the country, we have two splits sides trying to drive their own versions of idealism that RARELY engender a TRUE CONSENSUS.

'This guy was racist teabagging homic hater gun lover like all the right wing nuts!'
Unbelievably ignorany people on here. Do any of you really know what happened in Tucson?

'the south has prayers in schools–look what happened in tucson still'
First off, Tucson didn't have a shooting in a school. Secondly, Tucson is not the rebel south. We are southwest....much different than the southeast. Learn some history and geography. I cannot believe how ridiculous the extreme right and left are. What's wrong with you people?

I think you all should shut your traps. Your gun arguments over gun control and other nonsense are falling on def ears. Who cares if a black went and shot up a school....those wastes of human flesh are always commiting crimes. Your B.S. posts wont change anything. Watch the news/actual homicide shows/criminal shows.....90% of those criminals are blacks and mexicans. That's not racist...that's fact. You want to end the "gun crimes"?.....adolf hitler the blacks and mexicans....now THAT'S racist
