Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Remarkably, some Republicans want to make it legal to bring guns onto school property.

Well let's review here, concealed weapon, loaded firearm in public place, a minor with a firearm . CA does have gun control laws and the teenager with the back pack broke them. May those injured heal and may all applicable charges be brought against the half wit that brought the gun to school. Unless of course the story is kid found gun on the way to school, put it in backpack with full intent to turn it into the security officer at the school...that might work....

as well the parents let them watch violent movies instead of making them watch disney movies or family movies..they also let them run the streets late and with whoever they want...i have a 13 yr old son who i dont let go out after dark and i monitor his friends and what he watches and plays on his video games...he goes to church all the time..

That high school is in Crip territory. I am all for banning guns, but I think in this case a more comprehensive education program and real investment in the community down there would make a difference. Banning guns in gang territory won't work. There are deeper issues that go back to slavery down there. But nobody likes to see that. Those kids grow up without fathers. They are lucky to live past 25, and most of them never ever leave that community. It's not about gun control this time, it's about repairing the wrongdoings of the past. All the money that people pay for protection, buying guns and alarm systems, and driving waaay around gang areas, would be better put to use investing in the education of the kids that are born without a chance in these neighborhoods. That is huge potential that just goes to waste. All those people doomed to the gang neighborhoods. It's a shame.

Why did a student bring a gun to school to begin with? The student should be expelled.

Sadly, the truth is we just don't care about each other or respect each other anymore. With or without guns, kids learn to see others as less than, and it's encouraged by society. Without TRUE morals,(not nec. Christian) nothing will change. So sad! And Prepaidlegalguy, make mine guac n' chips!

Let this be a message to all who ever plan to invade the US. We will either shoot you accidentally, or, on purpose.

Would all the Second Amendment nuts who want everyone to be armed in bars, schools, churches, businesses, automobiles, public transit, and streetcorners please stand up? This kid brought his gun to school for "protection." And it accidentally discharged, severely wounding two classmates who were not threatening the gun nut and who probably didn't know they were in the proximity of a loaded gun. I hope the parents of the wounded students sue the h- out of the gun nut, the school, his parents, the gun manufacturer, the county, and the NRA. For starters. And lock the gun nut up in a prison where he'll really need a gun for protection.

It's no different than any thing else that people mis use. If he was driving w/o a lic and killed two kids what would you be saying? Would you ban cars? Kids get hurt at school all the time.

Thank God I came of age in the 70s and 80s, when this kind of garbage was virtually unheard of. What would possess a 15-year-old kid to carry a loaded weapon to school? Human beings have sunk to new levels of depravity.

I recently heard an appropriate quote. I do not know the author. "Those who hammer their guns into plows, will plow for those who don’t."
