Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Watching from outside America it is so plain what the problem is.

You know what the solution is too.

It is to late to take guns off the street...I love guns and use them all the time...hunting and rec...but I agree guns have gotten out of control. A 30 rd clip in a pistol is crazy!!! If you try to take guns away from everyone all you are going to do is take them out of the hands of the honest law abiding citizens...the criminals will still have them...atleast right now the criminal has to wonder if the owner of the house he is breaking into has a gun...if you ban guns he will just stroll right in...stronger control of who buys them would be a great start, but this problem will never be 100% fixed...

I think that it shows we take gun violence as an expected part of life. We as a society have no intention of doing anything about lessening gun violence, so why should another school shooting be the top story? Americans are willing to take everyday gun violence as something that we'll accept in order to honor the second amendment. It's sad, but true. Having total freedom to own and use guns is more important that the lives that are lost on a daily basis in this country,.

In America, if a day passes by without anyone being shot, I would call it news. No exaggeration, no sarcasm. Sadly.

I'm starting to think California needs to tighten up its very loose gun laws so law-breakers can't do this sort of thing....

Oh wait, I forgot, draconian gun laws encourage crime like this.

I think we ought to issue gun permits and provide a Glock 9 w/ extended ammo clip to all 1st graders as they enter school. Then they could protect themselves. After all the 1st ammendment says a "well regulated militia" etc. so we can say they are well regulated.

Let's find some way to blame the shooting on Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh. Make sure you interview the Sheriff, too. It just has to be the fault of bitter political retoric.

guns don't kill people bullets do. Just like chris rock said raise the price of bullets to 5,000 dollars for a single bullet. See how many die then.

Unbelievable. So sad and tragic. Gun violence in America needs to be dealt with. You don't see this kind of stuff happening up here in Canada. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.
