Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

Getting a gun at Wal-Mart is too easy. I'll wait for the next knife murder and watch all the pro gunners antagonize. It's not about knives fellas, its about guns.

Automatic weapons should only be in the hands of authorized law enforcement. No place for them in sport hunting – only purpose is to kill people.

So who said anything about automatic weapons? Machine guns have been strictly controlled since the days of National Prohibition.

someone mentioned that these events didn't happen 50 years ago... so why are so many young people committing mass murder these days? I think there are too many people who don't understand the value of life – other's or their own.

Time to run over to Shooter's World and buy some more ammo for my .357 Magnum. Don't worry, I only shoot paper targets (unless if you try to break into my house tonight.....)

There was a movie some years ago called the "Lottery" which the citzens woulld pick each year one of its own to stone to death. They felt by doing this they will maintain their purity.

I guess now it is called "Mass Shootings" and they happen at least once every few months. Another kid with a gun who was either teased or disillusional.

I realize people are upset that there's other stories that are counting as breaking news (the Comcast/NBC merger being approved), but that's also a big, widely-sweeping story that will affect a lot. And I know that there's not a lot here, but that's because this is a breaking story. Stay on the page and wait for more information to come in, and then there will be more information. CNN is really good at keeping up with news stories and updating, while other sites will just wait for all the information to come out and will just write one article when it's all said and done.

It would be nice if people could have a discussion on an article that's about violence without being racist, or blaming a religion or anything along that vein.
