Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

A student dropped his backpack and the gun went off and shot 3 people.....hmmm how likely is that?

In most other countries kids just settle disputes with a fist fight. In 15 mins someones got a black eye and knows he was wrong, no need for guns to be involved on either side.

Kalifornia has too many cars and too many lawyers. The politicians have no common sense. Remember them passing a law requiring 10% of all the cars sold to be electric or zero pollution?

I"m surprised CNN didn't try to pin the blame on Sarah Palin.

Gun control laws do not prevent criminals from obtaining guns of any type.

I am so tired of people calling for more gun control. The only thing the liberal laws do is take guns away from law abiding citizens. The criminals still carry them because they buy them illegally! There is no seven day waiting period for a Glock from the trunk of Joey's car. Morons.

...It's not that U.S teens/adolescents are worse than any other...it's just that the accessibility to guns enable them to make rash, impulsive decisions that are more violent than other countries...

The grass is always greener. But you really have no clue at all what teens in other countries are doing now do you.

Tighter gun control laws? Why? It should be okay for a mentally ill person to buy a gun and ammo at Wal-Mart. Good for business. How many murders by hand guns occur in USA per year? Look it up. Compare it to other developed countries where hand guns are illegal. You decide. How about that old tired mantra, "guns don't kill people, people kill people." Guns make it exponentially more convenient to kill people. Compare the figures, people murdered or injured by gun attacks and those murdered or injured by all other devices. You decide. America is fast becoming the biggest embarrassment in the world. This 19th century mentality is making us dumber as the developed world gets smarter. Oh, and one last question, why is it that the NRA is chock full of Born Again Christians? Ask yourself, would Jesus have a gun today?

I think Jesus would own a Glock but I have never asked him.

I love how everyone is rushing to point fingers at everyone but the shooter. That's like blaming fast food restaurants for fat people. If you want to lay blame, lay blame on the kid that held the weapon. Video games are not to blame, obama is sure as hell not to blame, gun control is not to blame, it's the the only one to blame is the one who pointed that gun and pulled the trigger. Anyone who blames race, video games, other people, etc. is completely ignorant. HOLD THIS CHILD RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS OWN ACTIONS. isn't that what teens want anyway? to be treated as an adult. I say give it to them.

I went to high school from 1977 to 1980, and in that time I only saw (or heard of) one gun being at that school, despite an equal split of the predominant races (remember bussing?) Ten years later, I went back to the same school as part of my reunion, and there were metal detectors at every entrance. Today, that same school looks like a prison.

    What has happened to us?

You jsut said you know of one gun. These days that is all it would take to turn your school into a prison. What has become of us? Now we overreact over everything and try to pass laws in hindsite to make ourselves feel safe at night while ignoring the actual reason people do things.
