Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

I agree that we need to take a look at gun control, there's no need for the kind of clips that can hold 30 bullets. There's no need for "cop killer" bullets. That being said the bigger issue is that there is no money out there for the mental heath care system. Students show signs of being at risk and the most attention they get is going to "the hall" which is like a vacation form their messed up families. However nothing is changed, no other services are offered. No counseling, no home visits, no rehab program. Basically they are turned out and we just wait for them to offend again. This time hopefully they'll be over 18 and that way we can lock them up.

Just what are cop killer bullets? No such animal exists. And it's a magazine, not a clip, get your terminology straight, if not, most will think of you as an idiot who doesn't know what he is talking about.

"clip", the first sign that you dont have knowledge of what you speak of. A high capacity magazine has nothing to do with the fact that loughner needs to be accountable for his actions. Americans are the first people to hold "things" accountable for actions instead of the person. what if he had a standard 16 rnd magazine ran through all the rounds "dropped" the magazine and put in a second what would be your argument now? "a person could legally only carry one magazine at a time in public to prevent these things from happening"

Where are the metal detectors? I would imagine all schools in California would have manditory metal detectors by now? This would be the exact reason I chose to raise my child up "In The Middle of Nowhere" Oklahoma! It's really a shame that more parents are not pro-active in their childs' lives. This may have been an "accident", but what was that gun doing in that childs' backpack to begin with? I will be praying for all involved.

Is California too broke now to afford metal detectors for schools? I thought California would have banned all those POS guns that will discharge when they are dropped. The poor little hoodlum kid probably could not afford a modern pistol like a Glock that will not discharge unless the trigger is pulled.

Haha Im trying to buy a glock next just to see what all the glock fever is about. I have two springfield XD's and they are nice pistols.

P.S. they nor my shotgun never leave my house they are used only as home protection to protect me and my family from the crazies out there.

This is obviously a false story. Califirnia has strict gun laws, guns are not legal on school property. So this didn't happen.

Snark aside, more gun laws won't change anything, only law abiding citizens would follow them. Gun control isn't the answer. The current Califirnia laws didn't prevent this, what idiot would think any more laws would (a democrat). Sounds like a kid, single mother household, brought a gun to school. Where were his parents? Who taught him that it's ok to bring a gun to school? Guns aren't the problem. Stupid people are.

For all you racist on here, I`m betting it`s a black kid bc it sounds like an accidental discharge. Had it been a white boy there would have been a plan to take out more kids. Just my take, we will see..

Stupidity... this has nothing to do with the NRA. This is illegal use, possession, etc of a gun.

I guess when animals get abused you blame PETA right? lol

If guns kill and people aren't the ones responsible, then more guns should be put to death by lethal injection or hanging, electrocution, etc.

I thinki they should throw the book at this guy, Accidental shooting or not. If he had not brought the gun to school nobody would have been ACCIDENTLY SHOT. School is not a place to bring a gun to, Throw the book at him and any other student that brings a gun to school. What the hell is this world coming to.

How could this have happened??? I thought schools are "gun-free zones". I mean if its a gun-free zone and anti-gun laws work so well at preventing violence then how can this be?
