Wolves, presumably like these but in Norway instead of Germany, may prefer joik or lokk music to American grunge rock.

Norwegian boy fends off wolves with Creed song

Luckily for Walter Eikrem, it does not appear Norwegian wolves care for Creed.

The 13-year-old was walking home from the school bus stop in the town of Rakkestdad this week when he noticed something on the hillside near his family’s farmhouse, according to Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine.

At first he thought they were dogs, but he soon realized they were wolves - four of them - the magazine said, citing Norway’s TV2.

The boy, remembering that his mother had told him never to run from wolves, pulled the headphones out of his mobile phone and cranked up the volume on the tiny speakers.

He was listening to “Overcome” by Creed, an arguably Christian rock band, and apparently, the wolves were not fans.

(Initial reports indicated Walter shooed the wolves away with a Megadeth song, but the blog at Gibson guitars cleared up the confusion.)

“They just turned around and simply trotted away,” he told the TV station, according to Der Spiegel. “The worst thing you can do is run away because doing so just invites the wolves to chase you down ... but I was so afraid that I couldn't even run away if I'd wanted to.”

To be fair, Walter was yelling at the top of his lungs and wildly flailing his arms, so it’s tough to say exactly what made the wolves decide the boy might not be delicious.

His mother told the local paper that she was going to pick her son up from school because she knew there were wolves in the area, but she got carried away shopping, Der Spiegel reported.

“I have a completely guilty conscience,” she said. “The previous evening, we saw three wolves on the edge of the forest when we were putting our horses in their stall. The horses were panicky.”

Um, thanks, mum? … Well, OK, scratch that. Perhaps sarcasm is a little harsh for the woman who taught young Walter never to run from wolves.

Maybe the wolves thought that if they ate someone who listens to Creed they would taste just like poo.

That's right, you never run from wolves (D), you just vote the mangy Democrats out of public office.

What self respecting Norwegian teenaged boy has passionless ho hum Creed on his player when exists much more powerful home grown bands such as Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, and Borknagar that are phenomenal and would definitely scare away anything? tsk tsk

First off, what self respecting Norwegian teenager listens to Creed? He should have been jamming to Emperor, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Dodheimsgard or even Fimbulwinter (my all time fave)....all the meanwhile hailing Satan as he crossed the fjords back to the farm amongst the frozen tundra. Anyways, me thinks the boy was left unscathed due to the fact that he was an ill-looking child that left the wolves (hounds of Satan) uninterested and looking for a more hearty meal. Or perhaps the child was passed by because the wolves just got done eating Scott Stapp after he stumbled out of a pub, drunk on mead.

FYI – The Creed song "Higher" was written about Scott's experiences of devine enlightenment that took place after drinking two gallons of mead.

Maybe it WAS Creed. If it was Megadeth he probably would have chased down the wolves and eaten them!

On the norwegian tabloid VG Nett that first wrote about doesn't even mention Creed but just says a "heavy metal" song. Creed isn't exactly heavy metal, at least here in the US. And, it says one of the wolves followed him and he threw a toy at it which it then ran away. And that was after he played the music. So, how did they get Creed? And how does CNN leave that aspect out?

Charlotte, as with most current "news" organizations today, CNN's focus is more towards "entertainment" and "opinion" type stories rather than ones containing the actual facts of the situation. MSNBC is even worse than CNN with this type of "news abuse".

Creed is the worst band ever though, so this article may not be accurate, but if I was a wolf, I'd eat the whole band and then just live a life of giving out high fives...

@James, actually, moron, you are obviously more interested in blowing smoke out your @ss than in reading the articles you comment on, as the answer is plainly in there. If this is true about Creed, it would be terrible for the wolf's reputation. Not only does Creed really suck, but its like a really wussy attempt at wussies trying to be heavy metal.

Creed and Nickelback the worst? The worst is actually Creedleback, a band formed by Chad Kroeger of Nickelback and Scott Stapp of Creed in 2012. Their formation is the harbinger of the apocalypse.

The story seems pretty factual to me. When you rely on news sources from other countries sometimes the details get lost in the translation. But CNN appears to have looked into this a littler deeper and even corrected some of the initial details. James has obviously never watched Fox news all they have on Fox are opinions with a little grain of distorted facts thrown in.

What a load of rubbish!!! The kid didn't "fend off" the wolves! They didn't go anywhere near him, and were probably just as wary of him as he of them. Wolves don't attack people, unless they get too close and poke them with sticks. This "news" story is pure tabloid sensationalism.

Wolves will attack people (if they're hungry enough). However, I agree that these acted like they were just passing through. Probably whilst glancing over their shoulders and muttering "Look at that Norwegian 'tard doing that spastic dance to Creed" and shaking their heads.

Stick poking aside wolves are hunters of opportunity and as such will attack humans just as most wild carnavores will. A pack of animals capible of taking down a bison or a moose isn't going to be overly wary of a lone human, especially a child.

I live in Alaska and we had a 32 year old female teacher killed in a village. She was out for a run/walk and the wolves drug her off the trail and killed her. Saying wolves don't kill people is preposterous! Like any predator they are simply looking for opportunity. Why is this article called sensationalism? Because Creed is listed as the music he was listening to? Who cares. The simple fact is he is a lucky boy!

People who claim that wolves don't attack and eat people are simply those who have never been attacked and eaten. Now for sharks and bears, they have never ever even considered eating people. No no no. Now sit down and I will tell you another nice Bambi story.

Any pack animal can attack people, it's not uncommon for children to be killed on native reserves by packs of feral dogs. In Vancouver, a 12 year old girl was bitten in full daylight in a downtown park by a lone coyote. These wolves may have been just checking him out but, that would be terrifying to be surrounded by a pack.

I get the sense this might be the most honest response of the entire bunch of them. When approaching humans, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Wolves will attack people. Its rare but it does happen. There was a wolf attack in Canada a few years ago and a woman in Nova Scotia was killed by coyotes. I'm sure she was poking them with sticks though.

I'm sorry to hear that a teacher was attacked in your village, however, since 1996, there have only been 11 wolf attacks WORLDWIDE. This wouldn't exactly suggest that wolves "are simply looking for opportunity." If they are, they're obviously terrible at finding opportunities.
