Reports: Terrorist attack kills 31, injures at least 100 at Moscow airport

Follow CNN's coverage of the terrorist attack at the Moscow airport

[Updated at 11:18 a.m.] Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in a television address that the Monday bombing at a Moscow airport was a terrorist attack.

He further said that he postponed his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, because of the bombing.

NATO condemned the attack and urged greater cooperation in the fight against terrorism. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said British officials are "in urgent contact with Russian authorities to establish the facts and to provide consular support to any British nationals who may have been affected."

[Updated at 10:51 a.m.] Footage from inside Moscow's Domodedovo Airport showed several police in a smoke-filled section of the airport.

There were several bodies lying on the floor, and video from another part of the airport showed paramedics rushing by with people on stretchers.

[Updated at 10:38 a.m.] A suicide bomber was responsible for the blast at Moscow's Domodedovo Aiport on Monday, Russian state TV reported.

The station said the handmade bomb was stuffed with metal objects to increase shrapnel from the explosion.

The state-run ITAR-TASS news agency said the explosion occurred at the international arrivals section of the airport. Another state media outlet earlier said it happened at a baggage claim area.

[Updated at 10:33 a.m.] As police went on high alert around the capital city, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called security chiefs to an emergency meeting at the Kremlin to discuss the situation.

[Updated at 10:06 a.m.] Flights destined for Moscow's Domodedovo Airport are being redirected to other airports in Moscow, either Sheremetyevo or Vnukovo, according to Russian TV.

Domodedovo is located about 14 miles southeast of Moscow, and the airport's website says it's the largest and busiest of the airports in the capital.

[Updated at 10:04 a.m.] State TV is reporting that the blast at a Moscow airport erupted at the baggage claim area, killing 31 people.

The Health Ministry provided the media outlet with the death toll, it said.

CNN is seeking details on the Russian Investigative Committee report that terrorists are responsible for the explosion.

[Updated at 9:53 a.m.] The Russian government is confirming the death toll of 31 people and says 130 people were injured in the Moscow airport blast.

[Updated at 9:48 a.m.] Russian state TV reported 31 people are dead and more than 100 others were injured in an explosion at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

In a post on its website, the Russian Investigative Committee is blaming terrorists for the attack.

[Updated at 9:37 a.m.] The explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport killed at least two people and injured 20 others, according to the official RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed the blast, saying 20 people were affected, although the extent of their injuries was unclear.

State TV said the explosion occurred at the baggage claim area of the airport.

The explosion occured at 4:40 p.m. in Moscow, RIA Novosti said.

[Posted at 9:24 a.m.] An explosion has occurred at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

There are conflicting reports of deaths and injuries.

I speak Russian at an intermediate-advanced level and am listening to Radio Moscow. I'm not positive (and maybe this has been reported already), but I believe they are reporting that the bomb was detonated in the baggage claim area for a flight that arrive from Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Listen to moron Ryan here. How do we know this was done by a Muslim? Well, how many other groups of people do you know of who kill innocent people by blowing themselves up? I think it's a pretty fair assumption. Why does it matter anyway? What planet have you been living on for the past 30 years?

Just curious, when was the last time that a major suicide bombing ended up not being a muslim? Vietnam is about all that comes to my mind, but correct me if I'm wrong. I personally have no problem jumping to this conclusion, moslty because it is correct 99% of the time. Religion is today's mythology.

The bomb was blown up by terrorists! I condole with all relatives to victims! It not important Moslems they were or not. Important that in Russia again innocent a victim, them not 30 persons, and almost 100! Those who has organized and has paid should be found and destroyed! And people should unite and hang together! When on September, 11th blew up America, Russian people bore flowers in Moscow to the American embassy, they were solidary.

Russian websites reporting it happened 4 30pm Moscow time at the baggage claim area of Domodedovo airport. They are also saying it is possible that a suicide bomber blew him/herself up. At least 10 dead and 20 injured. Very sad...

Explosions don't just happen for no reason, especially in the baggage claim area of an airport. It has all the marks of a suicide bomber. That kind of fanatacism is beyond understanding.

because they are the only ones that blow themselves up in this day and age....not to mention, they like killing innocent civilians...you will probably use the IRA as an example but for the most part, their attacks were always at the military or political parties.

That comment betrays such a staggering ignorance of the Irish 'time of troubles' it staggers the mind. The IRA attacked primarily military targets? Really? So we can draw as a conclusion from that comment that you know absolutely NOTHING at all about the IRA its history or the Irish problem: you didnt even bother to spend 5 seconds on Wiki before posting. How sad.

Gramps, you are an idiot. Loss of life is never something to joke about, and I am sorry if you are still left in the cold war. This is one of our allies against our current enemies. We may not see eye to eye on everything, but we support each other in the tough parts. Get a life, otherwise seems you are no better than the terrorists, or perhaps you are one?

"Killed at least 2 and injured 20." In the time of the Soviet Union, in translation we would multiply that by a factor of 10. It was always much worse than they would say. One thing is for sure, Russian counter-terrorist and law enforcement don't play around, from what I've heard. They will capture and kill whoever did this. They probably won't tell us much about that either.
