Reports: Terrorist attack kills 31, injures at least 100 at Moscow airport

Follow CNN's coverage of the terrorist attack at the Moscow airport

[Updated at 11:18 a.m.] Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in a television address that the Monday bombing at a Moscow airport was a terrorist attack.

He further said that he postponed his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, because of the bombing.

NATO condemned the attack and urged greater cooperation in the fight against terrorism. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said British officials are "in urgent contact with Russian authorities to establish the facts and to provide consular support to any British nationals who may have been affected."

[Updated at 10:51 a.m.] Footage from inside Moscow's Domodedovo Airport showed several police in a smoke-filled section of the airport.

There were several bodies lying on the floor, and video from another part of the airport showed paramedics rushing by with people on stretchers.

[Updated at 10:38 a.m.] A suicide bomber was responsible for the blast at Moscow's Domodedovo Aiport on Monday, Russian state TV reported.

The station said the handmade bomb was stuffed with metal objects to increase shrapnel from the explosion.

The state-run ITAR-TASS news agency said the explosion occurred at the international arrivals section of the airport. Another state media outlet earlier said it happened at a baggage claim area.

[Updated at 10:33 a.m.] As police went on high alert around the capital city, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called security chiefs to an emergency meeting at the Kremlin to discuss the situation.

[Updated at 10:06 a.m.] Flights destined for Moscow's Domodedovo Airport are being redirected to other airports in Moscow, either Sheremetyevo or Vnukovo, according to Russian TV.

Domodedovo is located about 14 miles southeast of Moscow, and the airport's website says it's the largest and busiest of the airports in the capital.

[Updated at 10:04 a.m.] State TV is reporting that the blast at a Moscow airport erupted at the baggage claim area, killing 31 people.

The Health Ministry provided the media outlet with the death toll, it said.

CNN is seeking details on the Russian Investigative Committee report that terrorists are responsible for the explosion.

[Updated at 9:53 a.m.] The Russian government is confirming the death toll of 31 people and says 130 people were injured in the Moscow airport blast.

[Updated at 9:48 a.m.] Russian state TV reported 31 people are dead and more than 100 others were injured in an explosion at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

In a post on its website, the Russian Investigative Committee is blaming terrorists for the attack.

[Updated at 9:37 a.m.] The explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport killed at least two people and injured 20 others, according to the official RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed the blast, saying 20 people were affected, although the extent of their injuries was unclear.

State TV said the explosion occurred at the baggage claim area of the airport.

The explosion occured at 4:40 p.m. in Moscow, RIA Novosti said.

[Posted at 9:24 a.m.] An explosion has occurred at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

There are conflicting reports of deaths and injuries.

Oh my goodness, what a tragedy. It was especially gruesome to see the bodies laying on the floor. How horrible, how sad. It's most likely the Chechen rebels. They have been know to do terrorist attacks in russia before. =(

Really chaps my hide when some dimwit goes off..."oh, another conspiracy theory" as if Watergate never happened, and the Reichstag burned down all by itself. Throughout history the world's governments have conspired with one another to pull off all sorts of hideous deeds. Anyone thinking otherwise is dumber than a box of rocks.

The problem at Domodedovo was that the suicide bomber came from outside carrying a bag which was made to be a cluster-grenade kind of bomb.
Unless you check every human entering the airport though any gate there is no securing yourself from this kind of bombings.

I'd like to point out, that although this is not completely wrong what you are saying I'd still be cautious with this kind of talk. b/c if an "Eye for an Eye" holds, then you'll might get in trouble with legitimation of 9/11 and any succeeding terrorist attack on the US and any western country.

@tanterei...what about American terrorists? Since 9/11, the vast majority of American murder victims were killed by one of their fellow Americans. I would imagine al Qaeda is jealous of our own domestic terrorists. Lets hope OBL isn't as smart as an illegal Mexican. Otherwise, we would have tens-of-thousands of "terrorists" entering this country and competing with our own domestic terrorists to see who could murder the most Americans.

"The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity - in all this vastness - there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

I AM A FORMER GUARD-WITH ALL THOSE NASTY WEAPONS-THAT THEY DON'T ALLOW ME TO USE-BUT SANCTION ME TO OWN-AND I PROMISE YOU THIS--I WON'T BE AT YOUR AIRPORT DEFENDING YOU EITHER--BECAUSE THE CURRENT SYSTEM THINKS IT CAN DEFEND AMERICA-JUST LIKE RUSSIA-WITH DOUGHNUT-MUNCHING SECURITY! FOLKS-I WOULD BE HAPPY AS HELL TO BE RE-EMPLOYED DEFENDING YOUR VULNERABLE, SILLY BUTTS-BUT I HATED THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS, MEDDLING CLIENTS, THE LACK OF RESPECT, AND THE LACK OF PAY--OBAMA AND GOD HIMSELF WON'T GET MY GUNS TO DEFEND AMERICA IF THE INTELLIGENCE AND POLICIES DON'T CHANGE ! THIS RUSSIAN INCIDENT POINTS OUT THAT EVERYONE IS STILL ( AFTER ALL THESE YEARS OF BABBLE AND PUNDITRY AND MONEY THROWN AT THE ANGER) WAAAAAAY VULNERABLE TO THIS TYPE OF TERRORISM ATTACK. BLAME-IS WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU FAIL TO PREVENT-–WHETHER IT IS A BOMBER, OR AN UNSTOPPING SERIAL KILLER. IT DOES NOT RESOLVE ANYTHING-AND I DOUBT THE RELEVANCE OF ANY OF THE ONE-LINE WONDER OPINIONS ON THIS BLOG FORUM. GUN CONTROL IS AN ASS-WORN ISSUE-IRRELEVANT ALSO! ME AND MY GUNS WON'T DEFEND YOU-BECAUSE YOU ( AS CLIENTS) ARE NOT WORTH THE RISK OF DEFENDING! I AM NOT UN-AMERICAN-I AM JUST DOUBTFUL THAT AMERICANS VALUE THEIR LIVES ENOUGH TO PUT OUT MONEY AND POLICY WHICH M-I-G-H-T BE EFFECTIVE. YOUR CHOICES-NOT MINE!
