Reports: Terrorist attack kills 31, injures at least 100 at Moscow airport

Follow CNN's coverage of the terrorist attack at the Moscow airport

[Updated at 11:18 a.m.] Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in a television address that the Monday bombing at a Moscow airport was a terrorist attack.

He further said that he postponed his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, because of the bombing.

NATO condemned the attack and urged greater cooperation in the fight against terrorism. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said British officials are "in urgent contact with Russian authorities to establish the facts and to provide consular support to any British nationals who may have been affected."

[Updated at 10:51 a.m.] Footage from inside Moscow's Domodedovo Airport showed several police in a smoke-filled section of the airport.

There were several bodies lying on the floor, and video from another part of the airport showed paramedics rushing by with people on stretchers.

[Updated at 10:38 a.m.] A suicide bomber was responsible for the blast at Moscow's Domodedovo Aiport on Monday, Russian state TV reported.

The station said the handmade bomb was stuffed with metal objects to increase shrapnel from the explosion.

The state-run ITAR-TASS news agency said the explosion occurred at the international arrivals section of the airport. Another state media outlet earlier said it happened at a baggage claim area.

[Updated at 10:33 a.m.] As police went on high alert around the capital city, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called security chiefs to an emergency meeting at the Kremlin to discuss the situation.

[Updated at 10:06 a.m.] Flights destined for Moscow's Domodedovo Airport are being redirected to other airports in Moscow, either Sheremetyevo or Vnukovo, according to Russian TV.

Domodedovo is located about 14 miles southeast of Moscow, and the airport's website says it's the largest and busiest of the airports in the capital.

[Updated at 10:04 a.m.] State TV is reporting that the blast at a Moscow airport erupted at the baggage claim area, killing 31 people.

The Health Ministry provided the media outlet with the death toll, it said.

CNN is seeking details on the Russian Investigative Committee report that terrorists are responsible for the explosion.

[Updated at 9:53 a.m.] The Russian government is confirming the death toll of 31 people and says 130 people were injured in the Moscow airport blast.

[Updated at 9:48 a.m.] Russian state TV reported 31 people are dead and more than 100 others were injured in an explosion at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

In a post on its website, the Russian Investigative Committee is blaming terrorists for the attack.

[Updated at 9:37 a.m.] The explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport killed at least two people and injured 20 others, according to the official RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed the blast, saying 20 people were affected, although the extent of their injuries was unclear.

State TV said the explosion occurred at the baggage claim area of the airport.

The explosion occured at 4:40 p.m. in Moscow, RIA Novosti said.

[Posted at 9:24 a.m.] An explosion has occurred at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

There are conflicting reports of deaths and injuries.

Many of the 911 hijackers were trained in Chechnya. Most of the rest were trying to get there until they were given another assignment...

Gorilla, we trained a lot of the 911 terrorists right here in the US, at a small flight training school (I think it was outside San Diego, but I'm not sure).

They were fighters in Chechnya before that. Most likely that is where they killed before and became comfortable with killing scores of innocents.

Gorilla shut up retard! No one of them was trained in Chechnya simply because there is no such facility for that. Chechens are very friendly and peacefull people, unless you come with weapon to their country.

Gorilla, Chechens are not associated with Al Qaeda. Different segment of Islam. Chechens have been fighting for their independence from Russia. Not condoning their methods, but they have their reasons.

Kasey, don't even try it, I have been to Iraq 3 times, and I can't say I enjoyed the experience, there were a NUMBER of not just Chechnian trained fighters there, but ethnic Chechnians themselves. We lost a few good Soldiers to an Ethnic Chech sniper who cut his teeth fighting agaisnt the Russians, so take your high mindedness and grow up before you say squat.

We can't jump to conclusions that it was the muslims. their are other terrorist factions in russia.

    January 24, 2011 at 9:52 am | Report abuse |
    • KPO'M

Let's not jump to conclusions. There are lots of nationalist threats inside Russia, so all of them will need to be considered unless someone claims responsibility for the blast. Make no mistake, though, this kind of threat is real, and it isn't something that adding another security line is going to prevent.

Al Qaeda certainly does have its network in Chechnya. In fact, that is one of its main theaters.

      January 24, 2011 at 10:24 am | Report abuse |
    • kasey

What I am saying is that this is not a random religious disagreement, it is a territorial disagreement. They want these Chechens want is Chechnya as a separatist republic, and Russia is the invader in their eyes. They want the invader out. This is not the same thing as our problems with Muslim extremists. I'm not saying they're any better, just not the same.

      January 24, 2011 at 11:23 am | Report abuse |
    • Sturla Molden

Not many Americans realize this, but Al Qaeda as an organization does not exist. It is just a label we use on armed, militant, angry sunni muslims, those with ugly beards in particular. Chechen militants are frequently described as Al Qaeda, at least in European media.

Actually 99.1 percent of the world terrorist are Americans who drop bombs and kill innocent people every day you just are two Dum to realize that or see that cause you get your news from a remote control try doing some research and the truth of the reality might scare you yes I know so if you don’t want the truth I suggest you shut up and go back to watching American idol and stay in the dark as your nation would like you to be in.

I've been worried about this kind of attack (outside the security zone) for a long time, and sadly it looks like it has happened. If anything, all the "security" we've added has made us more vulnerable to attacks in departure and arrival halls since there are bigger crowds of people waiting to get past the TSA and their overseas equivalents.
