Tough times for men and women in blue

As police in Florida prepared for the funeral of two Miami-Dade County police officers gunned down in the line of duty, shots rang out Monday in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state. Two other officers fell dead and a federal marshal was wounded. Follow updates on CNN and affiliate WFTS-TV.

On any given day, such violence against police officers would be disturbing. But the fatalities capped a particularly violent 24 hours in the United States for the men and women in blue. Eleven police officers were shot.

“It is a very disturbing trend for all of us,” said Hal Johnson, general counsel for the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “Florida has never seen a streak like this. I don’t think anybody has.”

It is natural to search for answers, Johnson said, even if there aren’t any. The shootings do not appear to be related, and the motives may never be known. Declaring it to be open season against police officers seems dangerously simplistic, he added.

He sees the shootings more as acts of desperation.

“They are shooting at people they know have guns,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness. It’s almost as if shooting a police officer has lost its shock effect.”

Consider:

- On Sunday, four officers were shot in a Detroit police station by a man who walked in, firing randomly. Lamar Deshea Moore was shot to death by police so his motive may never be known, but local reports say a relative was awaiting sentencing for double murder. Two of the police officers remain hospitalized. For more, read CNN’s update and affiliate reports from the scene: WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

- Two deputies were shot outside a Walmart in Port Orchard, Washington, near Seattle, on Sunday. Check out CNNKIRO-TV and KOMO-TV for the latest updates.

 - A police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop early Sunday in Indianapolis. Check out WTHR-TV and WISH-TV for updates.

- In Lincoln City, Oregon, a police officer was shot Sunday night during a traffic stop. The officer is in critical condition. Check out affiliate KOIN-TV for more information.

Although they do not appear to be related, the weekend shootings follow two other violent incidents last week involving police officers, including the Miami killings and a slaying in Lakewood, New Jersey.

Guns don’t make us safer. Rational leadership and rational people make us safer. Unfortunately, looking at present situation (you know, calling rational people names and giving paranoid schizophrenics a TV show on Fox News), rational people seem to be a minority.

I think that a reasonable compromise would be to limit the number of guns that one person can buy (for example, one per year) to start reducing the illegal resale of guns, and also limit sales to weapons that can be categorized as "defensive" not offensive, meaning an end to the sale of large clips, fully automatic weapons etc. Another point is that the violence just south of our border is largely enhanced by the free flow of weapons south. This will surely spill over to the USA soon.

Regarding: “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness..." Well consider people who have tried to do the right things are being pushed in to foreclosures, no food, can't pay bills, but see politicians, banks and other "powers that be" get away with whatever they want, driving new cars, wearing high end suits, break the law and STILL have all the power. You push someone or any animal in to a corner long enough and you'll start to see desperation! It's not that hard to understand.

Agreed. However, I feel that something needs to be said/done about the reputation of the police of this country. I hear more often that cops are abusing citizenry, beating us up for no reason, and shooting unarmed citizens. It seems that they feel the need to be more aggressive because they are being pressed to keeps the cities safe. I for one am wary of trusting police officers. Not that they have done anything to me. But the only contact i have with them is negative and this can't make their job easy and likely helps to contribute to the us-them mentality. I don't really know what can be done, but I'm sure lax gun control laws won't facilitate long careers. Cops are put between a rock and a hard place and I want to have sympathy for them. . .It's a little tough though. . .

A perfect example of this is several years ago there used to be troopers lining up a local highway. One would shoot you with the laser, and the other would walk INTO the street, point at you, and then indicate that you should pull over. Absolute idiocy. One day, one of these police officers were hit and killed. All in the name of brining in revenue for the city. . .Again, difficult to have sympathy when they are being told to do this. . .

The problem is not gun control, the problem is people control. I think an adjustment/overhaul of our judicial system is in order. How does America have people starving in the streets while someone can commit a crime and have food, housing, health care, free legal care and an education. We need to reward our criminal population with swifter, stricter and possibly more frightening punishment/consequences. There are other countries that do not share the degree of criminal stupidity that we see here in the US. Maybe we could adapt some of the more effective deterrents. I think that an attack on a police officer is unforgivable. Murder of a police officer? We shouldn't even have to discuss this kind of horror.

Violence will rise more and more in times like these-I really wish some more people on the right realized this. It's not like the will go away if you stop giving them unemployment checks or welfare assistance. Look at the fact that good, law abiding citizens, many who did nothing wrong but try to make a good life for themselves and their families are losing jobs, homes, assistance programs, and further education is unaffordable. If there is no where to go but down, they will go there. No one should be surprised.

There's a fundamental and very simple flaw those opposed to guns have, and I cannot for the life of me understand why they do not "get" it.

Rational leadership is a great goal to strive for, but the problem is - if you outlaw guns while "rational leadership" is in office, what happens once the guns are gone and the "not so rational leadership" is in office?

      Where will you be then?

The problem with your analogy is - if only leaders have access to guns, then they are no longer leaders (they would be dictators) and we would no longer be citizens (we would be subjects).

You're wrong. Guns do make us safer. It's a fact that the benefits out-way the negatives because by a much greater margin they are used for good and to stop crime (over 2 million times a year a gun is used to stop a crime). Trying to take them away from people will only make the violence worse. You can not debate and win against the facts. See Dr. Lotts "More Guns Less Crime" study for the facts. Also, you have a God given right to the tools to defend yourself and your family!

Being rational is different from being naive Deep. I'm not going to sit here and call you names. But really? This is the moral that you got out of this story? That we need to repeal the second amendment and take away our rights to protect ourselves? If the criminals can shoot at cops, what makes you think they won't shoot at you. Remember this, only the righteous people follow the law. Criminals will break the law, because that's what they do, that's why they're called criminals. Repealing the second amendment is not going to solve anything. In fact, it will only lead to even more of such cases. You think those people that shot the cops are "allowed" under the law to have guns anyway? No they're probably not. But lo and behold, guess what, they have guns! So really, repealing the second amendment is only going to affect the law-abiding citizens, who will be further victimized because now they can't even protect themselves.

Every day, as we did earlier this morning, we hear of more shootings/killings of policemen/women. When, in the name of God, will our population rise up and demand serious gun control. The NRA should NOT run our country and sentence countless innocent people to die. If nothing else, the massacre in Tucson should and MUST result in some positive and meaningful reform. It seems to me that many more people worship the Second Amendment than they worship anything else.

"Criminals will always have guns" is always the quick and easy way out of this argument. How many criminals do you see running around with RPGs? They are readily available and do much more damage than a simple pistol, why doesn't every criminal have one? If they had one they would obviously be a step ahead of their victims because civilians can't get a hold of them, so why don't they? How many criminals are running around the streets with fully automatic M16s? Those used to be legal and criminals used them all the time. Why aren't they using a fully auto M16A2 now that it's not legal to own one since that means, according to NRA logic, that they have the upper hand on civilians?

The answer is pretty simple. When they are illegal, they are very difficult to get a hold of. People seem to think, if we restricted the use of guns, that would mean suddenly every bad guy in the country would have a weapon and everyone else wouldn't. That is silly. There is a reason people don't roam the streets with AK47s, and it has nothing to do with choice of weapon and everything to do with availability.

They also think that restricting gun use means that they can't hunt, or shoot targets or whatever, but that is a completely different situation and if you can't tell the difference I can tell you THAT is your problem.

"aking them away form law-abiding, responsible, citizens does nothing but turn them into victims."

There's a big difference between banning guns and regulating their manufacture, sale and ownership. If all fire arms were licensed and regulated UNIFORMLY throughout the country, their proliferation in the hands of crazies and even some criminal elements, will be reduced greatly.

Totally agree. Price of any commodity is depdends on supply. Cut the supply and the price is driven way up. That will make it more difficult for anyone to own a firearm.

To add to the conversation, if owning a gun makes ME safer from criminals, then why could one guy walk into a station full of highly trained officers and gun down four of them? These are people who carry firearms on their hips all the time and they still got gunned down. Tell me, how did owning a gun make them one bit safer?

Second Amendment needs to go. In 1700s and 1800s, America was still expanding. The frontier was a dangerous place, full of indigenous people who saw Americans as invaders of their land and the wildlife was full of marauding beasts. One obviously needed to protect his/her family from such problems, so a gun was as necessary as utensils to cook food. However, in 2011 America, we can surely say that bears and wolfs do not pose such a threat and Native Americans are not invading New Jersey. So these outdated relics of barbarism need to be gone. It is as simple as that. There has been this surge of mass hysteria since election of President Obama (thanks Mr. Beck) that his socialist, communist agenda will bring old glory to its knees and destroy everything. A tax increase from 36% to 39% on the richest 1% of the country was called a number of things I don’t care to repeat. Quite a few of you were reeled into thinking that this tax increase won’t leave you with food to eat. Chances are, you don’t even know people to whom this increase applies to.

True, except that in 2011 America guns are the answer for every want to be gangster. These criminals roam around unsupervised by their parents from an early age and feel no remorse for shooting an old lady for her purse, a fellow classmate for 'disrespecting' them, or a cop because that's how they roll. America is more dangerous now than it was when all we had to worry about was bears, Indians, and the British.

Unfortunately gun laws only apply to those who follow them, aka law-abiding citizens. People who perpetrate these shootings would have done so whether there were tighter gun control laws or not. All gun control does is punish those individuals for whom guns (as with any other popular hobby) is a way of life. It's like telling car collectors they can only have so many cars (which, by the way, kill more people in the US every year than guns do).

How does taking away the second amendment CREATE more criminals? Some of you really need to think before you post. One can argue that "only the criminals would have guns then", but this story hear is about armed cops being shot-so allowing firearms to be owned by non criminals aren't solving things either. For decades we have had these disucssions about guns and yet still, despite the fact that all these non violent people have had the right to bear arms, we are still no safer and no better off-in fact just the opposite-there are more and more violence involving guns. So I find it very hard to truly relay on that argument as anything other than NRA rhetoric.

Also, and I find this ironic- many of you who think guns should not be outlawed believe in keeping pot outlawed So your reasoning works for guns, but not for pot? I mean everyone can get it now if they want to and all making it illegal does is criminalize non voilent people and fuel the creation of an underground market of drugs, violence, and criminal activity. If pot were legal, many of these violent gun incidences would probably not occur.

Sir, I could take you out no matter what type of gun you tout. Get over your power-hungry self and realize that a gun doesn't make you a man. You'll find out what happened the last time someone waving a gun around like a lunatic told me that the only way to get it was to take it from his cold dead fingers. Guns are a problem, but perception of them is even worse. It only helps you to be a better coward.

Tighter gun control is NOT the answer, harsher punishment is. When people aren't scared of the consequences of their actions because they know they'll spend 40 years in prison, paid for by tax payers, people are willing to commit these crimes. If you make punishment by death a mandatory thing for any homicide, carried out within one year from the date of the crime, I guarantee crime would drop.

It is the absolute responsibility of every law-abiding American citizen, to own, learn how to operate properly, and carry a firearm, period. Anyone who refuses to do so, for any reason, is a bad citizen and does not deserve to breath the sweet air of freedom America provides.

There is no other way to ensure our freedom continues to exist, period.

If you had a gun and someone was pointing a knife at your throat, would you have the reflexes to get your gun out and point it at the guy before he sticks you? It looks really cool when they do it in the Matrix but really, just a reminder, we live in real world where if you want to use a gun like they do in the movies, you need to be a highly trained operative who has had advanced combat training for years. A US Marshal was shot twice in the Florida shooting. You are telling me you can be quicker than a US MARSHAL?!

Aaron, you must have an awful lot of fear inside you to make you feel you need to be armed at all times. News flash – nobody is coming to stick a knife in you. Do you really need a gun to go to McDonalds or to Safeway? The Marine Corps. used to build confident men who went out into the world with confidence and balance. What happened?

    • Not for me

Come on Aaron, that's taking it a little far. Personally I see it as my responsibility to keep guns OUT of my home, given that three individuals in our family have all suffered from depression and committed suicide using them. The 2nd amendment restricts the government from disarming the people, but does not mandate that the people be armed.

Don't look at the gun laws or talk about repealing 2nd amedment. Just take a look at the racial demographics of the cop killers and you can see the real problem. We all know it and think it but it is against the law the say anything about it. Until we can say something about it cops will keep being shot. Ho hum...at least they get good benefits and pensions.

You are absolutely incorrect. I do not know the specifics on these 10 injuries, but I can tell you that the one here in the mid-south involved two white men. One was 16 and the other was 40-50's. Please look it up for yourself. It is very dangerous for a person to make generalizations on what they want to be the truth and not what is actually the truth. Do more research, get the facts and try and spew your hate with facts next time, not your reality. You will find that it's actually much harder to spew hate with actual facts.

It's not left vs. right, people... it's the people vs. the corporations! WAKE UP

We live in a culture of violence. TV shows, inflammatory political rhetoric, and sarcastic baiting "commentary" on certain TV networks offers permission to those among us who would solve disputes with guns. Our foreign policy is based on war as a method of choice for dealing with adversaries. How can we expect law officers to be safe when armed citizens react with gunfire to any perceived injustice? We seem to be free to shoot at whomever we want whenever we feel threatened.
