Tough times for men and women in blue

As police in Florida prepared for the funeral of two Miami-Dade County police officers gunned down in the line of duty, shots rang out Monday in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state. Two other officers fell dead and a federal marshal was wounded. Follow updates on CNN and affiliate WFTS-TV.

On any given day, such violence against police officers would be disturbing. But the fatalities capped a particularly violent 24 hours in the United States for the men and women in blue. Eleven police officers were shot.

“It is a very disturbing trend for all of us,” said Hal Johnson, general counsel for the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “Florida has never seen a streak like this. I don’t think anybody has.”

It is natural to search for answers, Johnson said, even if there aren’t any. The shootings do not appear to be related, and the motives may never be known. Declaring it to be open season against police officers seems dangerously simplistic, he added.

He sees the shootings more as acts of desperation.

“They are shooting at people they know have guns,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness. It’s almost as if shooting a police officer has lost its shock effect.”

Consider:

- On Sunday, four officers were shot in a Detroit police station by a man who walked in, firing randomly. Lamar Deshea Moore was shot to death by police so his motive may never be known, but local reports say a relative was awaiting sentencing for double murder. Two of the police officers remain hospitalized. For more, read CNN’s update and affiliate reports from the scene: WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

- Two deputies were shot outside a Walmart in Port Orchard, Washington, near Seattle, on Sunday. Check out CNNKIRO-TV and KOMO-TV for the latest updates.

 - A police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop early Sunday in Indianapolis. Check out WTHR-TV and WISH-TV for updates.

- In Lincoln City, Oregon, a police officer was shot Sunday night during a traffic stop. The officer is in critical condition. Check out affiliate KOIN-TV for more information.

Although they do not appear to be related, the weekend shootings follow two other violent incidents last week involving police officers, including the Miami killings and a slaying in Lakewood, New Jersey.

You know it's a sad time to be living. No respect for police. Thugs are killing the very people who protect us. If this is allowed, what are we going to do? Guns need to banned. No one except the military should have guns!! Guns for sport should be banned! Because of this, now we are the hunted! Confiscate ALL the damned guns! And I do mean ALL!

You need to go live in another country and see how much better the United States is (guns and all). And while you're at it, take Rosie O'Donnell and her same viewpoint with you!

I am absolutely NOT stating they deserve this. What I will say is ..welcome to what happens when you push your population too far. The US was formed as a Republic. We're now a (dys)functional Democracy. Never in the history of the planet has a Democracy been stable. They degrade into an Oligarchy. The problem stems from our would-be representatives from both sides of the aisle. Bought and paid for by Corporate America.

Hey of the job is too dangerous for them let them serve coffee at Starbucks. Gone are the days where they coul ddrink coffee and intimidate people. Also, my girlfriend dated a cop and broke up with him. Needless to say, he said she 'disrespected' him and would not leave her alone. She called his supervisor and nothing happened. She complained to the mayor and both were repremanded. She occasionally gets dead chicken in her yard. Lesson: DO NOT DATE COPS!!!!!

The yahoo's who have shot these law enforcement offices: are they any better off now that they have used their 2nd Amendment right against "oppresive" goverment personnel? I don't think so. The only way you can effectively fight the government is with a lawyer, not a gun. If you bring a weapon to bear against a law enforcement officer, you will lose. Individuals who think they can legally use 2nd Amendment rights against the government are wrong.

Beware the man who has nothing left to lose. If your only recourse is either violence or an unaffordable attorney, do you *not* see this is a problem?

Of course, you are politicizing shootings here that have nothing to do with the 2nd amendment, or Political struggle. Pretty disingenuous, & really easy to see through..

Guns don't shoot people, people shoot people.. Just like Cars don't drink & drive, or drive recklessly by themselves, but people drink & drive, & drive recklessly.. Wake up!

that's fine because in the end we're all human once your dead their is nothing else so its no different for anyone who works for the government or not. death is death only thing u can do is fight to survive. a gun definatly increases my chances of survival. by the way u have no more right to take my rights away than i do yours. so I'm deciding u aren't allowed to own or have food or beverage in or around your person. go starve idiot.

I know you were looking for a response. So here it is. Its obvious your a person of low morals/intelligence. I'm guessing you have had encounters with the law and let me guess....You didn't do anything....just minding your own business, and the police started harassing you for no reason. Time to wake up the the reality of your life. Your solely responsible for your situation in life and blaming someone else is a lame excuse. But I guess it's just easier for you. Don't you wish you were smarter than a 5th grader? Well, at least I know you've got to live your pitiful life on your own.

Unfortunately it is going to get a hell of a lot worst. Our justice system and current established laws will ensure that this type of criminal activity will escalate. Prisoners get three meals each day, options to a college education; all sports are available, free healthcare, free housing, free legal and free entertainment. Prison life for a high percentage of people is stress free with benefits. What you are seeing today is just the beginning.

I have met so many cops that have over inflated egos who walk around like they own the world cause they have a badge. Most of them are hate filled ego-maniacs who try to intimidate the regular American citizen.

We just lost the Chief of Police (only 55) a couple of weeks ago in a small town in OR (about 12 miles from my town, and officers here were at the scene). It was very sad!! The boy that did it was only 21 and killed Chief Painter with a single bullet to the head!!

Was this a particularly bad 24-hour period for police killings because of the number of cops killed, or because CNN wanted to do a story about it?

Come on really people use your heads even if we do away with the guns people are going to find a way to kill and hurt people so i guess what i am saying is it doesnt matter what we do people are going to do the crimes no matter what we do and prison isnt teaching them anything

Yes it is sad to see a life lost but cops aren't the only one's dying. And when is the last time you've seen an off duty officer doing community service in the community that he 'serves and protects'? And as far as gun laws, people have being killing others since the beginning of time (before guns came into existence) so even if guns weren't in the picture murder would still be. I mean look around, drugs, car bombs and so on. We also talk about China and how they punish the murderers and drug dealers and corrupt, well I don't know about their country but as far as our country there is noway to be just in punishing those people when the punishers are just as corrupt and drug involved. And as far as race, people in general kill people, and for that guy to make a racial comment in this matter can you really blame a minority for wanting to kill HIM? For us to be called the UNITED STATES of AMERICA we sure are divided, from the top of the government to the bottom of the lower class. And for you all to get on here and argue politics, race and right and wrong instead of paying respects to the lifes lost, I mean really how can we be surprised by the outcome of each day?

if more people were armed I don't think it would be so easy for the "bad guys" to run around shooting folks. or it would make them think a little more first.
