Tough times for men and women in blue

As police in Florida prepared for the funeral of two Miami-Dade County police officers gunned down in the line of duty, shots rang out Monday in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state. Two other officers fell dead and a federal marshal was wounded. Follow updates on CNN and affiliate WFTS-TV.

On any given day, such violence against police officers would be disturbing. But the fatalities capped a particularly violent 24 hours in the United States for the men and women in blue. Eleven police officers were shot.

“It is a very disturbing trend for all of us,” said Hal Johnson, general counsel for the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “Florida has never seen a streak like this. I don’t think anybody has.”

It is natural to search for answers, Johnson said, even if there aren’t any. The shootings do not appear to be related, and the motives may never be known. Declaring it to be open season against police officers seems dangerously simplistic, he added.

He sees the shootings more as acts of desperation.

“They are shooting at people they know have guns,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness. It’s almost as if shooting a police officer has lost its shock effect.”

Consider:

- On Sunday, four officers were shot in a Detroit police station by a man who walked in, firing randomly. Lamar Deshea Moore was shot to death by police so his motive may never be known, but local reports say a relative was awaiting sentencing for double murder. Two of the police officers remain hospitalized. For more, read CNN’s update and affiliate reports from the scene: WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

- Two deputies were shot outside a Walmart in Port Orchard, Washington, near Seattle, on Sunday. Check out CNNKIRO-TV and KOMO-TV for the latest updates.

 - A police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop early Sunday in Indianapolis. Check out WTHR-TV and WISH-TV for updates.

- In Lincoln City, Oregon, a police officer was shot Sunday night during a traffic stop. The officer is in critical condition. Check out affiliate KOIN-TV for more information.

Although they do not appear to be related, the weekend shootings follow two other violent incidents last week involving police officers, including the Miami killings and a slaying in Lakewood, New Jersey.

When the police run roughshod over the rights of citizens it decreases public respect for them. These shootings could be related to the various outrageous things the police have done lately – there have been quite a few lately.

I'm sorry for the family's of the injured and deceased officers.
But you can't blame an inanimate object for misuse. Do you blame Chrysler, or GM, or any other manufacturer for drunk drivers?
I'm a gun owner, and I own a gun shop. We folow ALL ATF and State laws, as 99% of stores do.
We are inspected at random, and your duck's better be all in a row.
A full 80% of my customers are current or retired LEO's.
The shooting I don't understand is the Miami/Dade one.
He's going to be served a warrant for murder, and they send 4 officers? And this moron has a 5 page "rap sheet".
They should have had a SWAT team with them, but hindsight is always 20-20.
That is like blaming the turkey fryer for burning down the house, when the (again moron), used it in the kitchen, and two of his kid's died in the fire.
All I'm saying is don't blame the object for misuse, blamer the user!

The only people who should be carrying a handgun are the people who have a job where they might need to kill someone.

Oh for God's sake! It's no more dangerous for cops than it is for the people SHOT BY COPS. It's plenty dangerous to be 92 years old, standing in the living room of your own house, IN YOUR BATHROBE, while the cops serve a no-knock warrant ON THE WRONG HOUSE, and blow you away. It's plenty dangerous to be 12 years old, riding your bike on your street, and get creamed by cop who blows through a stop sign at 70 m.p.h., and IT'S PLENTY DANGEROUS TO BE A COP'S WIFE, TRYING TO LEAVE HIS ABUSIVE AZZ, ONLY TO FIND THAT HIS BUDDIES ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY WHILE HE BEATS YOU SENSELESS AND IF YOU TRY TO DEFEND YOURSELF AGAINST HIM, YOU GO TO JAIL FOR ASSAULT ON A POLICE OFFICER. It's plenty dangerous to be a woman, on a lonely country road, get pulled over BY A COP, and never be seen alive again. Gimme a break. They've brought it on themselves, the public is tired of being at their mercy and they HAVE NO MERCY, and people are starting to FIGHT BACK. FIGHT BACK against no-knock warrants SERVED ON THE WRONG HOUSE

Ah generalizing and stereotyping at its finest. You're looking at several events committed by how many officers? What proportion of the entire police force in the country do they make up? You know I heard on the news a black person committed a crime. Guess it's time I fought back against all black people because that one man did something wrong.

My heart goes out to the officers shot in the line of duty. I will keep them, their families, and their friends in my thoughts and prayers.

OUR COUNTRY AS A WHOLE HAVE LITTLE TO NO RESPECT FOR POLICE !!!!! WHY ASK WHY?? THEY COME FROM THE SAME SCREWED UP POOL AS THE CRIMINALS!!!!! OUR WORLD TODAY IS A MUCH MORE SCARY & DANGEROUS PLACE THAN IT WAS WHEN I WAS BORN. AS A MINORITY WOMAN IN ST.LOUIS MO,I CAN TELL YOU THE POLICE ARE OFTEN "THE ENEMY". I WAS TOLD BY A POLICE TO WATCH MY SON WHEN HE WAS JUST A BABY BECAUSE THEY ARE A TARGET BY JUST BEING BLACK!!!!! THEY ARE NOT RESPECTED BECAUSE THEY OFTEN SHOW NO RESPECT TO THE COMMUNITY.

What fools the gun control group are and CNN as well for trying to create a wave of anti-gun hysteria with the shooting of Congresswoman Giffords. Dancing in the blood of victims appears to be both groups modus operandi for political gain. Great Britain and Australia both banned guns and violent crime increased dramatically. Mexico bans all weapons and crime runs rampant. Don't even begin with the "US supplies guns to Mexico" baloney. Check the numbers via The Washington Post and you will notice the actual number of guns listed is minuscule. Again, dancing in the blood of victims for political gain. Judging by the responses on this thread it appears most people agree this is a non-issue and most believe we already have enough laws and controls if they would just be enforced when appropriate. I feel for the police officers killed this week and offer my condolences to the families, but CNN should be reporting news and not trying to run a political agenda.

Thank the NRA for this, and for likely continuing bloodshed.

There is NO practical reason for regular citizens to own assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Feel bad for these poor young guys who get suckered into being cops and soldiers. The only uniform I'm putting on is the one they let you wear to blast off into space, as far away as possible from the rest of the nutjobs on this planet!

This is what happens when law enforcement looses credibility. As officers of the law they are leaders like it or not. When people turn on their leaders it is due to those leaders being a poor example. People are tired of cops exceeding their authority, protecting the bad cops, then turning around and pointing the finger at the public. Step up and change the image people have of law enforcement.

I don't like any guns, we don't need to be shooting dinner anymore just go to the grocery store (admittedly even those animals are not killed very humanely). The only thing a pistol is good for is to kill people and with so many people carrying them around like a cell phones you best be very careful not to accidentally tick someone off because we are not too tightly wrapped anymore.

How is American going to protect itself from a 'tyrannical government'??? Isn't that notion a little goofy? In the mean time leave the gun laws so lax you live in tyranny anyway?
