Tough times for men and women in blue

As police in Florida prepared for the funeral of two Miami-Dade County police officers gunned down in the line of duty, shots rang out Monday in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state. Two other officers fell dead and a federal marshal was wounded. Follow updates on CNN and affiliate WFTS-TV.

On any given day, such violence against police officers would be disturbing. But the fatalities capped a particularly violent 24 hours in the United States for the men and women in blue. Eleven police officers were shot.

“It is a very disturbing trend for all of us,” said Hal Johnson, general counsel for the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “Florida has never seen a streak like this. I don’t think anybody has.”

It is natural to search for answers, Johnson said, even if there aren’t any. The shootings do not appear to be related, and the motives may never be known. Declaring it to be open season against police officers seems dangerously simplistic, he added.

He sees the shootings more as acts of desperation.

“They are shooting at people they know have guns,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness. It’s almost as if shooting a police officer has lost its shock effect.”

Consider:

- On Sunday, four officers were shot in a Detroit police station by a man who walked in, firing randomly. Lamar Deshea Moore was shot to death by police so his motive may never be known, but local reports say a relative was awaiting sentencing for double murder. Two of the police officers remain hospitalized. For more, read CNN’s update and affiliate reports from the scene: WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

- Two deputies were shot outside a Walmart in Port Orchard, Washington, near Seattle, on Sunday. Check out CNNKIRO-TV and KOMO-TV for the latest updates.

 - A police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop early Sunday in Indianapolis. Check out WTHR-TV and WISH-TV for updates.

- In Lincoln City, Oregon, a police officer was shot Sunday night during a traffic stop. The officer is in critical condition. Check out affiliate KOIN-TV for more information.

Although they do not appear to be related, the weekend shootings follow two other violent incidents last week involving police officers, including the Miami killings and a slaying in Lakewood, New Jersey.

If certain races didn't have guns murder rates would drop 80%.

Police will die in the line of duty. It is no surprise, as they take their jobs knowing this risk.
The real unstated issue here is that, how many more people die per week due to unneeded police use of force or lack of judgement. How much tough times are citizens under due to police brutality and abuse of authority.
How many corrupt and incompetent police roam our streets and go unpunished?

The Police no longer uphold the law, their jobs are not to serve and protect, but gather generate revenue for the state.
When they defend criminal enterprise and multinational corporations over civilian interest and liberty. I respect them for nothing. And every officer taken down is a victory for freedom against tyranny, oppression and corruption.
I would rather be Free and face my own dangers then be safe and lose them. Seek Liberty not Protection, for then you deserve neither is you choose the later.

Why does this story need to become an issue of race? Why does political disagreement have to be so hateful? Why does the right to bare arms have to cause so much hate and not democratic discourse? Isn't that what our country is all about? Haven't we been given the freedom to work issues out together as a country? Doesn't this many attacks on law enforcement in 24 hours seem more than coincidental?

There are good and bad people all over the world. I can't look at someone and see their true intentions and I don't think you can either. My point being that their are police officers that care and some that abuse..Im in Seattle and remember the homeless woodcarver shot and killed by a cop. I remember the woman punched in the face by male officer . I remember the young man stomped in the face with handcuffed on the ground....with that being said...I also remember timothy brenton.. I remember the Lakewood 4.....my point is this ..shooting a cop because they're a cop only helps to divide the community from those who really do want to serve and protect...and were supposed to be the civilized culture ?

Pretty sickening to read posts like heathers and dodfireman who post as if these guys deserved to get killed for doing thier job. I can pretty much guess that posters like them are pretty much the extremists bottomfeeding kooks of society who have an axe to grind and will never be in the majority of this country. They mite not want the help of a cop, but truth be told, they probably dont deserve it either. No one deserves to be shot in cold blood because of what they do for a living. Heather, If i came across you lying in the gutter, knowing your mentality ahead of time, Id just as soon step right over you and keep on walking, you dont deserve the help of anyone- EVER!

My advice to anyone thinking about becoming a cop.....see a shrink. Why in the world would you want to be your towns garbage man? It's not how it used to be. You look at someone wrong your a racist and brought up on charges. They give you tools such as pepper spray, use it and the person may choke to death and that equals lawsuit, taser them and that could put the person in cardic arrest again lawsuit. Car chase....self explanatory. So most cops go out with the above mindset and hence you have 11 dead officers in 24 hours. Think about this......Is your life or career worth some dumb sh– drunk who will not pull over. AGAIN IF YOU WANT TO BE A COP SEE YOUR LOCAL SHRINK FIRST.

Let's make these officers out as heroes and downgrade the meaning of the word. It's simple. They were doing their jobs just like the rest of us. How about when a cop speeds by you talking on a cell phone and not wearing a seat belt. Cops think they are above the law. I say good job to these gunmen. I feel for the families of these officers but that's life.

You cannot congratulate the gunmen and then claim to feel for the families as well. You are claiming sympathy for the family while idolizing the ones responsible for their pain. Some police officers abuse their positions, but do your references to speeding or talking on a cell phone really warrant a death sentence?

Not saying every cop is bad but the majority of them from experience and witnessed encounters is that they are, just a legalized gang and whatever they say is gold.. They have the ability to completely ruin peoples lives who dont always deserve it, and be completely backed up by a judge in a bad mood for money.. The system is not just and people wonder why people rebeling and shooting cops? Because theyre being bullied by men with a license to beat taze and shoot whoever they want and get away with it..

I don't think people see the police as friends or protectors anymore. The police have also lost our respect. I think most people fear them, hate them, and see them as people to avoid. So why is it surprising that nutjobs are now having little problem shooting them? This is what happen when you infringe on people's rights endlessly and treat people with no respect. Anyone that has ever encountered the police, knows what I'm talking about. Even when it's you that called them and needed their help, usually they just end up scolding you, talking down to you, and doing little to help.

Its getting bad out there and will continue. One bad rumor and our house of cards will fall. When the riots start I don't expect the police to show up.

I'm an ex-cop. My hearts go out to all my comrades in blue and their families. This world is truly falling apart as predicted in the Bible. Get ready for such tribulation this world has ever seen not from the worlds beginning till now! Hasn't anyone finally recognized that man cannot lead man. Time for God to step in and destroy all those ruining the earth as well as all those in opposition to him. 2 Tim 3:1-6 / Matt 24:1-14 / We're there folks. Time to hoose whose side to be on. These governments are going down. ALL OF THEM by the hnds of God. Organized religin the first to go... Political leaders next. Then all others not paying honour to the only true God. The choice to make is NOW!
