Tough times for men and women in blue

As police in Florida prepared for the funeral of two Miami-Dade County police officers gunned down in the line of duty, shots rang out Monday in St. Petersburg, on the other side of the state. Two other officers fell dead and a federal marshal was wounded. Follow updates on CNN and affiliate WFTS-TV.

On any given day, such violence against police officers would be disturbing. But the fatalities capped a particularly violent 24 hours in the United States for the men and women in blue. Eleven police officers were shot.

“It is a very disturbing trend for all of us,” said Hal Johnson, general counsel for the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “Florida has never seen a streak like this. I don’t think anybody has.”

It is natural to search for answers, Johnson said, even if there aren’t any. The shootings do not appear to be related, and the motives may never be known. Declaring it to be open season against police officers seems dangerously simplistic, he added.

He sees the shootings more as acts of desperation.

“They are shooting at people they know have guns,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what’s going on out there, but I’ve never seen it like this. I do see the developing of a callousness. It’s almost as if shooting a police officer has lost its shock effect.”

Consider:

- On Sunday, four officers were shot in a Detroit police station by a man who walked in, firing randomly. Lamar Deshea Moore was shot to death by police so his motive may never be known, but local reports say a relative was awaiting sentencing for double murder. Two of the police officers remain hospitalized. For more, read CNN’s update and affiliate reports from the scene: WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

- Two deputies were shot outside a Walmart in Port Orchard, Washington, near Seattle, on Sunday. Check out CNNKIRO-TV and KOMO-TV for the latest updates.

 - A police officer is in a coma and in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop early Sunday in Indianapolis. Check out WTHR-TV and WISH-TV for updates.

- In Lincoln City, Oregon, a police officer was shot Sunday night during a traffic stop. The officer is in critical condition. Check out affiliate KOIN-TV for more information.

Although they do not appear to be related, the weekend shootings follow two other violent incidents last week involving police officers, including the Miami killings and a slaying in Lakewood, New Jersey.

the truth is that most times police see the people at their worst they do not see the kindly Dr. Jeckel (if they saw that side then there would have been no problem) they see the Evil Mr. Hyde in the act of evil and respond accordingly. Be assured that we are at war with evil self centered people who victimize others to satisfy themselves just as we are in a war on terror

if they just killed each other it wouldn't be a problem but most the times they attack the helpless or people that refuse to protect themselves(or innocents get caught in the crossfire) that is the nature of the criminal he is a coward that attacks people that are weaker than he is. Just like in nature the predators prey on the weak or unwary

Society is simply getting tired of these largely uneducated, armed thugs running around unchecked. How may COPS have been killed, vs how many innocent citizens have been shot by cops?

actually civilians that act in self defense shoot twice as many criminals as cops do. But then civilians try to dodge their responsibilities by not being on jury duty or calling their elected officials when they see criminal get off on some technicality. As a soldier I get respect from civilians for the war on terror (but not any from the military command as we are thought of as a spare tire get one killed just replace him) whereas with police they get very little from the civilians but their chain of command (for smaller depts. only know that they will have to live in the same community with his next of kin and so are loathe to get them hurt) Most of you who have negative views about police are your typical big city dwellers who the police are not part of your community maybe because they feel unwelcome or other reasons the point is (like the chicken and the egg question) do they feel about you, because the way you treat them, or is it the other way around and this creates a endless cycle of bitterness and resentment and neither of you really know where the prejudice comes from

actually a lot of our prisons are populated with a lot of illegal immigrants we should brand them and send them back where they belong and if they get caught on American soil again hang them right on the border as a warning to the others

Well most people reading your would say "man those officers should have let those upstanding members of society just get away with their felony." We don't get up every morning just to write good people tickets. We do it so you dont hit that van full of kids who we and the fire department would have to pick up after some a hole hits it at 90 mph in their f 250. So to all you people with a lead foot and all you wanna be bangers STOP VIOLATING THE LAW!

This is horrible – but I worry that we're bringing this more violent culture upon ourselves. The police treat EVERY citizen as if they were Osama bin Laden. The lawmakers make laws that send even petty criminals to jail for dozens of years. We make violence the norm every day in the US. The result is that we get these altercations that go horribly wrong and good police officers die. The cops need to settle down and go back to an Andy Griffith approach. Be friendly and helpful and not adversarial right from the start. If the situation warrants it – they can ramp up from there. The lawmakers need to stop legislating life sentences for people who steal pizza. If you take all hope of freedom from someone what do you expect in return? They have nothing to lose so they shoot back. Then you take the hate speech on the political talk shows, the violent video games, the road rage. People are stressed and freaking out over the smallest things. This is going to get worse before it gets better unless we address these larger problems.

Andy Griffith is a fantasy show and the problem is there are to many repeat offenders out there because of the failure of the legal system (it is no longer a justice system) to put the violent criminals away. And what have you done have you been on jury duty, have you contacted your elected officials and held them accountable for the laws and rules they make that give the criminals more rights than their victims. What about the elected officials that let these criminal types go as "they were never given a fair chance and are just misunderstood" but yet they want to enact tougher laws that erode our freedoms like the second or first amendment. Also do you report a crime that you see happening or do you just ignore it. Also when was the last time you thanked the police officer for something good they did. They only see or hear the negative things then you can not blame them from keeping you at arms length. Before you cast stones make sure you are pure and clean.

As the economy worsens, more people will commit more crimes. People with nothing to lose do not care about anything but survival. If they shoot at an officer, they are prepared to die also.

You send a man with a gun after someone , then you wonder why he shoots them? If the police want to talk to you, maybe they shouldnt come armed to the teeth. A little respect goes a long way, if you dont give it, you cant expect it in return.

America has never looked more like a Police State, and there's never been more police getting shot, but there's no connection, this is purely a coincidence...

To all the men and women in blue, thanks. Not many have what it takes or the restraint to do what you all do for us. Not many people realize that in an emergency you are the first responders. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your fallen co-workers.

lots of stupid comments here, the only real thing americans should get from this besides sympathy for the families, is that the right to bare arms is a simply archaic and stupid right. Each day in the U.S. 34 people are murdered by handguns, every day! Until americans grow up and realize that this IS the reason people die every day and it will not change until the laws change and the mentality of americans change.

Yes. But they are getting such a huge amnuot of support from the open borders people, that the psychologist that figure out how to win are urging those people to do just as they are doing.Until we have a President that will honor his oath of office and enforce the Immigration Law, we have to depend on Congress to stop the surrender. And take a look at some of the comments out there. Everyone who does not agree with the break the law illegal aliens supporters, is considered a racist and a bad person. It is, by the way, exactly what the Nazi's did in 1938.
