Witnesses recall mayhem after blast at Moscow airport

The scene at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport became so chaotic that airport staff had to break through a wall to let frightened passengers leave, a witness said.

Tatyana Popova, speaking from the departures area, said she was waiting at passport control when she heard the blast. Monday's explosion - which Russian authorities have attributed to a suicide bomber - caused smoke to course through the baggage claims area, she said.

“There were a lot of people crowded there because the escalators stopped,” Popova told the Russian station RT. “The staff organized (an) emergency exit, but the door was very narrow and people crowded there immediately. So, the staff started breaking the wall to let the people out."

Footage released on YouTube by Russian state TV showed several police in a smoke-filled section of the airport. There were several bodies and pieces of luggage lying on the floor, and video from another part of the airport showed paramedics rushing by with people on stretchers.

Russian state TV said the handmade bomb was filled with metal objects to increase shrapnel from the explosion.

Elena Bakhtina, who owns a café in the airport and who has a colleague in intensive care after the blast, told RT that the explosion must have been a strong one.

“Our café is about 100 meters from the arrivals area, and when we heard the blast, plaster started falling from the ceiling," she said.

Russian authorities said the death toll is 35. Another 35 people are in critical condition, and dozens more sustained less serious wounds.

  1. What in the world

In my world suicide extremists are not martyrs. I am a buddhist at heart and karmic law is more strong than any belief system out there. I feel for all the witnesses. Dont forget, when 911 happened the world was shocked and stood by us. There was a conspiracy there, the conspiracy of compassion. What if this happened here?! If your family was blown to bits in an airport life would be a differant story...my prayers to those lost

@katyakatya – where did you read thay the Russian Govt knew that the attack was going to happen, including where and when? Nobody has said anything about that. If you say something so charged, give sources or be quiet. I'm so tired of webzagerations!

@Roman – "I agree. Smells jews"??? There are so many things wrong with this made-up, fabricated, pulled-out-of-your empty skull statement, that I will leave it alone. If there's anything smelly here is your 1930s-Berlin approach to world affairs.

And finally, @Russian – using your logic we can say that, two weeks prior to 9/11, the USA had used strongly-worded warnings against Cuba. Then Castro must be behind 9/11! Do you recognize you're using random facts to justify your prejudice or are you convinced that your rants make sense???

the question is not about right and wrong-to bomb, to mame or to kill – it is and always shall be about tolerance – without it there will exist always a flood of ignorant and selfsih violence that will forever compromise the majority innocent at the hands of the minority radical.

Let's really organize a nice area for Muslim fanatics to ascend to 1-800-paradise. It should be remote, and they can queue up to the blow up area where they can safely detonate. In the mean time, we humans will rid the world of those mutants.

Helllloooo, CNN moderators. What is acceptable about this anger-filled discussion? Is this a study in itself about the seeds and growth of hatred? This is not the place for name-calling and angry outbursts. When I see all the aggression in these posts I want to cry out about the crushing pain I can only imagine all the victims' mothers have in their hearts and bodies tonight. Whether at some twisted level, this that or the other person "deserves" to suffer, can't we all at least recognize the pain and suffering with some human empathy?
