Legislator pushes bill to restore Colonel Reb as Ole Miss mascot

A state legislator apparently misses Colonel Reb so much, he's pushing a bill to bring the former University of Mississippi mascot back.

He also wants the college band to play "Dixie" at games - even on the road.

"The University of Mississippi shall bear the nickname 'Ole Miss Rebels' and its mascot shall be 'Colonel Rebel,'" states House Bill 1106.

"The University of Mississippi's marching band ... shall play the song 'Dixie' before, during and after home and away football games and basketball games at which the band, or a portion of the band, is present," the legislation states.

Under the bill, which is authored by Democratic state Rep. Mark DuVall of Mantachic, the band would be required to play "From Dixie with Love" only once - during halftime.

Awesome... .if this passes maybe we could have a re-anactment of civil war at halftime.

It would even be more awesome if CNN would post the comment I have been trying to make; that this is wrong, racist, and Duvall is a tool. But I doubt it!

There is nothing racist about this. Ole Miss has been the rebels forever. Imagine if the Pittsburgh steelers became the Pittsburgh rhinos or something. People would be mad. There is nothing racist in the name or ideology of colonel reb. There is nothing racist in any of the lyrics of dixie. @drap banasy, ginstill you are all ignorant.

I think a better example would have been the NFL using the Redskins. Its not that its simply racist but its symbolic of hatred, oppression, a way of life and old thinking that does not have a place in our society today other than history books. That's like the Germans naming a soccer team the Nazi's its simply inappropriate to remind people of a horrific ideology that again has no place in today's society other than the history books.

    @ who cares:
They're not trying to change the team NAME; just trying to change the MASCOT back to a throwback of the times of suppression of basic civil rights. If you don't think that's racist, you must agree with it. Which is fine, for you, I guess..Just because it's tradition does not make it right.
I think that there is better legislation that could be drafted, such as raising the education level a little higher than almost rock bottom, or better compensation for Katrina victims. I also think calling people who disagree with you idiots shows that you probably got your education at a level that's equal to Mississippi's standards.

Co-sign. Anyone who sees nothing wrong with this grand idea for "legislation" needs to take a good, hard look in the mirror.

Not only are these people racist but there lack of intelligence is letting anyone see how ignorant and racist they truely are!!

They should try these on for size: The NASCARS, The Cousin Bangers, The Illiterates, The Bible Thumpers, The Xenophobes, The Shoeless Sockless Banjo Twangers, The Spitoons, The KKK, The Sore War Losers, The Let It Goes.. Seriously If it was a fighting Apache warrior then I wouldn't care. The fighting native is actually a compliment to the strong and determined Native American. Black kids play on those teams and you expect them to wear a slave owner general on their uniforms? Go ahead and change it, but when skilled African athletes refuse to go to your hick school you will be very sorry about your clinging to an antiquated idea.

Well apparently there aren't any real problems in this country. State cooking pots, guns and school mascots must be all that needs attention.
