Fired Navy commander: My bosses knew about raunchy videos

The Navy commander fired for making racy videos and broadcasting them on a ship says that the movies had the "tacit approval" of senior Navy leadership, the Navy Times reports.

Owen Honors' statement to investigators, obtained by the Navy Times, marks the first time his side of the story has been made public.

Honors made headlines for days in early January when the videos were published on the Virginian-Pilot newspaper site. The films included a simulated rectal exam, anti-gay slurs and sailors pretending to shower with each other aboard ship. In early January, Honors was removed from his post commanding the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

An official 15-page statement that Honors gave to Navy investigators states that two commanding officers, two strike group admirals "and myriad other senior military and civilian distinguished visitors" were aware of the videos, according to the Navy Times.

Honors made the videos in 2006 and 2007 when he was executive officer of the Enterprise, and they were discussed during meetings with the ship's commanding officer and other leadership, the Navy Times reports. During these conversations, Honors received “encouraging feedback” about the content of the movies and was never told to stop making them, according to the report.

Honors' superiors did not respond to Navy Times' requests for comment.

Everyone against Capt Owens is completely mortified by his actions... you say he is immature, childish, disrepsectful, politically incorrect. I say he did what he had to do to boost and maintain morale with the crew earning their ultimate respect. Every member of that ship knew about those videos... the Captain, CAG and Admiral included... no one said a damn thing about them because everyone of them saw them for there real intention. A morale booster...

The fact remains that he had it drilled into him as a midshipman that such behavior would get him discharged, knowingly engaged in conduct unbecoming an officer, indicated on video that he was disobeying a direct order and was stupid enough to order the tape viewed by thousands of enlisted personnel. To you honor and rule of law are meaningless, to me they're vital.

TCT... if you were a veteran I'd probably have alot more respect for you and a willingness to debate... as it is you have no idea what it is like to serve in harm's way... don't lecture me on about honor, courage or commitment until you get off your couch and support your country...

I would not have fired the guy BUT for him to whine like a victim is nuts. He is a big boy. He knew if he got caught he was going to take the hit. Man Up buddy. Remember the Navy guy who crashed his sub off Hawaii and took the responsibility foursquare. That was a man and we could use more like him. This guy is just wearing a costume.

WZRD1 "He was fired for disobeying a direct order of the Secretary of the Navy, the Commander in Chief AND the Congress of the United States of America, who said such behavior was unlawful and would not be tolerated.
Yep, it's politically correct to obey your damned orders!"

Guess what according to the GUIDELINES you are discussing everyone in the navy would get a pink slip tommorrow. Guess we should just not have a navy huh?

In "A Few Good Men," one Marine realized he didn't take care of a fellow Marine who needed help. The disgusting comments here are like those men. You start making fun, belittle your fellow man/woman, you soon leave words to physically harm them. Then you don't stop until you are a Nazi at a camp killing people you don't like.
Now or later every hate filled thought will come back to you.

How much harder does it become to enforce discipline in a military unit, when the XO casts off his own discipline?

The videos were wrong. However, the fact that his chain of command approved them means that this guy is absolved of sin. He would NOT have done them if they weren't approved. How does this guy commit the sin 5 years ago, get promoted, screen for CO of a carrier, and THEN be hung out to dry (4-5 yrs later)? I don't get it...something doesn't smell right here.

SERIOUSLY...some of you should get the facts straight...
#1. He was an XO when the videos were 2006 – 2007.
#2. When he was asked to quit making the videos...he did. Otherwise there would be vidoes from 2007 until the present.
#3. When he was asked to quit making them...he should have been punished then. He wasn't. He was told to cease...he closed. Is he a scapegoat to continue to show the military in a positive light...yep!
#4. Moral on ships (this includes submarines) usually sucks. It is hard enough for military personnel to have to continually do the eat, training, drills, eat, watch, eat, drills, maybe sleep and then do it all over again without the support of your fellow sailors and a little moral boosting.
#5. I know a lot of gay service members who wouldn't be offended in the least. They laugh right along with the rest of us because they KNOW IT IS A JOKE and not because of PEER PRESSURE!! are you kidding...we are adults not teenagers any longer. If you can't handle yourself as the butt (no pun intended) of a few jokes...
#6. This country is going to politically correct itself right into the ground...look at where it has gotten us so people deserve to be considered equal...hell yes they do...and if this country would get over blaming everyone else we could probably move on...treat each other with respect...and look at the real problems facing our country instead of the hurt feelings of some who expect everything to be given to them.

Hard work and tough skin involved in living life are what are required...not the "punishment" of a man who tried his hardest to make life livable for his crew.

He had his engaging in conduct unbecoming an officer and his indication that he was disobeying direct orders on a video shown to thousands of enlisted personnel, it isn't a gray area. I agree it should have been punished immediately (he knew from the time he was a midshipman it was cause for less than honorable discharge), but that means superiors aware of it should be punished for dereliction of duty, not that he was persecuted.

tct... quit using the term "conduct unbecoming an officer"... I'm sure you have the Uniformed Code of Military Justice memorized from top to bottom... is doesn't escape the fact that you never served in our military and have no idea what it is like to serve in harm's way...

Master Chief: If you're REALLY what your handle claims you'll know of the man I learned it from, Slade Deville Cutter. Your condescension is telling, by the time you could achieve that rank you'd have to learn that things aren't always what they seem.

My husband staunchly disagrees with the repeal of DADT. However, he would never in a thousand years make a video like this for training. Unprofessional to say the least. The Captain in question should have known better by this time. So let's just say he was stupid. He made the choice to make these videos. If he were a man he'd accept the blame. His actions caused this. He still gets his pension and someone just as capable will replace him and oh by the way hell get a better paying job now too. He should not have done it. It's not about PC it's about being dignified. This was not a comedy club or buddies hanging out. This was a training video and most of us would not have done this.
