Fired Navy commander: My bosses knew about raunchy videos

The Navy commander fired for making racy videos and broadcasting them on a ship says that the movies had the "tacit approval" of senior Navy leadership, the Navy Times reports.

Owen Honors' statement to investigators, obtained by the Navy Times, marks the first time his side of the story has been made public.

Honors made headlines for days in early January when the videos were published on the Virginian-Pilot newspaper site. The films included a simulated rectal exam, anti-gay slurs and sailors pretending to shower with each other aboard ship. In early January, Honors was removed from his post commanding the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

An official 15-page statement that Honors gave to Navy investigators states that two commanding officers, two strike group admirals "and myriad other senior military and civilian distinguished visitors" were aware of the videos, according to the Navy Times.

Honors made the videos in 2006 and 2007 when he was executive officer of the Enterprise, and they were discussed during meetings with the ship's commanding officer and other leadership, the Navy Times reports. During these conversations, Honors received “encouraging feedback” about the content of the movies and was never told to stop making them, according to the report.

Honors' superiors did not respond to Navy Times' requests for comment.

You learned it in the 3rd grade "Commander" "Honors". Two wrongs don't make a right.

Major Dick Winters would have laughed at the videos and would be ashamed that Honors was fired.

Major Dick would not have been fired if the wrong person found out he had a boyfriend either.

I don't see why not, it doesn't involve an active duty officer playing an off color role.

It was approved by the brass. He has their endorsement. Just more double standards. Kinda like Bill Clinton.

@Willie12345 Or Mark Sanford, Newt Gingrich and Henry Hyde to name a few. Didn't think their hypocrisy was as important as Clinton? In fact it was worse since they were all very active in the impeachment process.

. No code can cover all contingencies. We cannot put justice aboard our ships in books. Justice and decency are carried in the heart of the captain, or they be not aboard. It is for this reason that the Admiralty has always sought to appoint its officers from the ranks of gentlemen. The court regrets to note that the appointment of Captain William Bligh was, in that respect, a failure.

Oh, grow up idiot. YOU are the one who chose to make those videos...on the other hand, if you really thought nothing was wrong with those videos, than there's something wrong with you.

To everyone who is saying things like "unless you've served, your opinion doesn't count!" , don't forget that it's your job to take orders, nothing more nothing less. So suck it up and get over it.
And quit reminding everyone of your hardships. You act like people are taking your rights away or that you're personally being attacked. I work for the military myself (as a civilian), and I've been sailing too. I know all about what goes on, on the ships. Unfortunately, insulting videos such as these are only the tip of the iceberg for disrespectful sailor behaviour. Not only is gay bashing OK in their mind, it's also acceptable to cheat on your spouse. This is why, sailors, you take orders. Leave the decisions up to the rational civies, k thanks.

Lanfear, I'm missing something. What do you mean by "To everyone who is saying things like "unless you've served, your opinion doesn't count!" , don't forget that it's your job to take orders, nothing more nothing less. So suck it up and get over it."

Sure, we take orders, just as he did. And he knows his movies violated orders, then he harassed everyone by showing them on on-board TV. But since he violated orders (of maintaining good discipline, not harassing – both straight and not. etc), we all have an order to report it. So, what exactly are we supposed to suck up for???

And PWEASEEE, do not compare you being a civilian with a labor union with us being active duty. You don't really play on the same field we do.

lanfear ~ Yes, let the rational CV's do all the decision making. That is why were in an economic depression. And we did follow orders to the letter without complain. That's why were involved in (2) wars that are bleeding the country dry, not only of much needed tax dollars, but more importantly promising young men and women who are killed in the line of duty.

Because no civilian ever cheats on their spouse or makes off color remarks. You think you're somehow better than military personnel? Get over yourself.

Those who have never served are morons. These tapes are nothing compared to what REALLY goes on in the military. His stuff is g-rated compared to the stuff I have seen and heard with my 18 years associated with the Army.

I'm pretty sure it's the morons who serve, actually. Isn't that why they join the military to begin with? Because they're morons who have no promise of a career anywhere else.

Officers are held to certain standards of conduct, particularly in public. It's stricter in the Navy because diplomatic postings are far more likely. It saddens me to think someone could serve 18 years without knowing this, much less one with such low character as to say all who haven't served are morons. I apologize for your service.

Because no one that ever served in the military ever went on to do great things...Maybe you should use this thing called the 'internet' and 'google' and spend about ten seconds searching for the names of a great many people that did just that. Your comments ridiculous.

Really Lanfear – By your line of reasoning, Gen. George Washington is a moron for giving up a chance of absolute power in favor of a CV government. If you're going to make comments say something constructive and not just spout off your ignorance.

It is not important whether people were laughing or not. When you work on a ship within a tight knit community it can be very lonely if you don;t fit it. I would bet my life that a lot of people were laughing at the same time they were thinking it was inappropriate. As a naval officer he should not have made those videos because they break down unit cohesion and morale by singling out certain people. Not only that but he is giving approval for others to make racist, anti-gay, or generally derogatory comments. There us a myriad of ways to entertain a ship and boost unit morale without resorting to gay bashing or racist jokes. Shame on him.

  10. common sense

We really need military officers to be more serious so they can get back to the task of killing foreigners (sarcasm). The officer was just trying to add levity to a tense situation, but the PC police won't tolerate adult humor. These are adults, and aside from the gay jokes, the video content was pretty tame. "As soldiers, you may have to kill someone, but we [promise there will be no ribald humor." This is silly.

I agree with ChiTown – Do what you want on your own time. The XO's commanding officers should be included in this smack down. I say have fun, but for work, even on a Navy ship, this went too far. However, if the XO was to be disciplined, it should have happened long ago.
