Elementary school principal killed in shooting; man arrested

The principal of an elementary school in northern California was shot to death Wednesday, police said.

Placerville Police Chief George Nielsen identified the victim as Sam Lacara, 50, the principal of Schnell School, who was shot in the upper torso.

John Luebbers, 44, a custodial employee, was arrested in connection with the shooting, which was believed to have stemmed from a dispute between the two men, Nielsen said.

No schoolchildren were injured, but authorities believe one student may have seen the shooting.

To those who will use this tragedy to share their political views on gun control: First off, this is not a political story – keep your views to yourself. Secondly, several people below have already posted gun control comments so I'll respond in kind: A school is a Federally mandated Gun Free Zone. The janitor broke the law by bringing a gun nto a school. It's obvious to me that he really didn't care about the law – the same way that most criminals don't. Guns were illegal at that school which proves that gun control laws won't work.

Not a political story? That is powerful denial.

Asking others not to share their views right before you do exactly that makes you a hypocrite. Of course, when you come up with gems like "Guns were illegal at that school which proves that gun control laws won't work," then we know not to take you seriously.

Tell me, do you think explosive control laws work? As the explosive control laws do not work, do you think we should abolish them?

@Patrick Interessting point you bring up there. Is there any studies done to show the net affect of explosive laws? Are there.

      A. More bombs made by private citizens.
      B. Fewer bombs made by private citizens
      or
      C. Has the number of bombs made by private citizens remained unchanged?

      I'm guessing C

And I've got to say having a father who has worked in education and has been a principal for the past 20+ years I am grateful no mentally unstable person has done anything like this to him. Guns have no business even being able to enter a school. They can say it's a gun free zone and post as many signs as they want to but unless they are actually monitoring it and enforcing it how can anyone feel their children and loved ones are safe. Instead of no guns for anyone or all guns for everyone, how about making it even harder for the average joe to get a gun. Give anyone trying to get a gun or even a permit a background check and psychological assesment. If you pass and pay a large fee then be allowed to have a gun. If not, can't get a gun. And all guns manufactured should have a built in tracking device registered to that person. Maybe it's not thee best solution but it's better. And lest we forget there was a time when guns didn't exist, in fact for the greater portion of this world's existance, and we still made it as a people.

Cool! So, we implement a test before exercising a right. We can do that at polling places too.
THEN, insist on a non-existent tracking device, maybe the starship enterprise can beam one down for us.
THEN insist on high fee to be paid for exercising one's rights. Cool! Poll taxes again!
After we get both systems down pat, we can work on free speech fees.
And lest we forget, there was a time when the right of free speech didn't exist, in fact for the greater portion of this world's existence and we still made it as a people.

Would it be asking too much for you & @Rex to turn yourselves into the closest mental ward of ANY HOSPITAL? Or, you could call 911 & tell them you are both insane & dangerous to yourselves & others, they'll come & pick you up-Free! Valerie: You are very naieve, I feel so sorry for your children, if you have any-what would you protect them with if ever needed? Have you instructed them, or gotten any instruction on other ways to protect yourself? Do you know the basics? Do you know NOT to walk ANYTIME, ANYWHERE talking on A CELL? ( Always pay attention to what is going on around you) Quiz yourself. The last person you saw, what were they wearing, what race, what color eyes-shape face? Pay attention to WHAT your Kids have on-when they go to school, or you take them somewhere. BASICS. Do you know if someone approaches you in a parking lot/with or without a gun what to do? Your BEST bet...collapse-dead weight...Kick & scream & cover Your Head....IF the person means you harm, letting them get you in your car OR theirs is a GUARANTEE. Hopefully you will never need any of this, but needing it (like a gun) and not having it doesn't work, neither does having a gun and not be prepared/trained to use it. I would much rather have a gun & never need it, then need a gun & not have one. God luck with getting everyone who shouldn't have guns (criminals, mentally challenged) to turn them in, not going to happen. Gun Control will ONLY ever keep guns out of the hands of responsible people. @wantanye: Thank you-my husband says he agrees, hmm even after all these years-My prayers & thoughts are with both the Victim & the Shooter in todays tragedy, also with the students & parents.

No making things illegal works it can prevent a lot of crimes on a spur of the moment or such things but by thinking that banning anything is going to make problems go away is a ridiculous idea and thinking that gun control laws will prevent criminals from getting weapons doesn't work there needs to be more enforcement of the laws we have not just making more to make people feel safer ... The violent crime rate in the us has been steadily declining for over 20 years but since it makes for "good" news we hear more about it now so everything seems worse

The 2nd amendment and gun laws have nothing to do with it. The problem is 'US'. The collective and most vocal 'we' here in the US are greedy, hateful, selfish, arrogant, and ignorant. We believe we are superior beings. We love to mutilate and kill each other because we are void of humanity and compassion. In short, the collective 'we' of the US essentially sucks. The killing won't stop until our culture grows up and learns to put someone other than 'me' first.

The US citizenry has demonstrated an inability to follow the rules. We should lose our gun privileges until we grow up and stop being so stupid.
