Elementary school principal killed in shooting; man arrested

The principal of an elementary school in northern California was shot to death Wednesday, police said.

Placerville Police Chief George Nielsen identified the victim as Sam Lacara, 50, the principal of Schnell School, who was shot in the upper torso.

John Luebbers, 44, a custodial employee, was arrested in connection with the shooting, which was believed to have stemmed from a dispute between the two men, Nielsen said.

No schoolchildren were injured, but authorities believe one student may have seen the shooting.

Guns are too easy to get..even for idiots. And tell me ....what is the purpose of "legally" selling assault rifles in this country?? Duh, they're not exactly used for hunting wildilfe. Too many "freedoms, too many "rights" in this country. Too much politcial correctness as well. Too much frivolous litigation. And you wonder why this country is spiraling downward!

Try getting your facts straight, you cant legally buy an "assault rifle" in the US. Assault rifle is a very specific type of weapon, a selective fire rifle, that can be set to fire either single shot or in a burst/fully automatic.

You can buy something that looks like an assault rifle, but it's semi automatic so by definition it is not an assault rifle.

      Too many rights, what?

Really? Those rights are what made us a super power so quick. It gave people incentive to move here.

You want to give those up? Move to Afghanistan and grow a beard. How about china? Both those countless would love to take away your rights.

Gun control laws will never stop random shootings like this one. What they do, do is prevent some seriously bad people from having easy access to guns. Gun control should not be about absolute bans, just reasoned controls to stop career criminals and mentally disturbed people from walking into a store buying a gun and then shooting the town up. This janitor may not have fitted into any category that would have stopped him owning a gun. For example I could go buy gun, pass all the required checks and then go out on a shooiting spree. No gun control law is ever going to stop that, and all an absolute ban would do, would be to hand weapons to criminals who don't care about the law anyway.

Disagree with you about the effect of an outright ban. No guns means no guns.

May. You live in a dream world. You can never totally ban guns, criminals do not care about gun laws that is why they are called criminals. Even Bloomberg, mayor of New York City admitted that his police cannot provide individuals protection they are there as a deterrent and you can see how good that works. He is willing to sell the safety of his citizens for his admitted bad idea.

May, anyone can build a sub-machine gun in their garage in an afternoon. The IRA was famous for arming its people with homemade Sten SMG's. how is banning guns going to prevent someone from making one?

      February 2, 2011 at 4:19 pm | Report abuse |

Go ahead and make one in your garage. Obviously, we can't stop everything. But we can make it illegal to own guns, period. It's a lot harder to build a gun in your garage. I, for one, wouldn't have clue how to make a gun.

May you are either wilfully ignorant or just plain stupid. Look at how a total ban has not worked in the UK. They won't even let us carry knives there. Still gun crime and violent crime in general has increased. Also last summer 2 poeple went on shooting sprees in the north of England. So tell me how a total ban on guns stopps gun crime"?

Why is it everytime someone does something wrong we go to gun control? DO you think that someone wanting to do something illegal will follow the law to obtain a gun? Maybe we need more pple with guns that are properly educated about them. I went to a high school where most of the students hunted and were allowed to keep their guns in their cars during the day. Now, how many pple would go into a school starting a shooting if they knew 90% of the student was also armed and would fight back... it's easy to bring a gun and be brave when you know no one else will be.

You are more likely to die from a doctor's malpractice. Over 194,000 Americans died in 2010 of medical malpractice. A little over 30,000 die from gun shots, about 16,000 were either suicide or accidents. The other 14,000 or so were the result of crime.

Guns are used for sporting events (Olympics as an example) and for some, to put food on their table..They have a purpose..It is the bad people that use them for the wrong reasons. You will never keep guns from the criminals-they are usually the ones that will have them despite the law..Let the decent people be able to defend themselves.

Guns for sport and hunting can be kept under lock and key, signed out for a certain time limit and then returned. Now, THAT'S gun control. Ban individual ownership of guns, period.

Wow some people. If you took all the guns away from the ppl who actually follow the law does that make since? If someone wanted to kill someone do you think it really makes a difference to them if having a gun is illegal or not. Bad people can get what they want. Look at drugs you think laws are stopping them. So let's take rights away from ppl that only want to defend or hunt or just feel safer having them around and let's just have the criminals have guns. Duh

even by your statement, if we had a complete ban you would not be able to go on this shooting spree. Criminals will have guns even if there were a ban, but you need to distinguish between janitors and drug dealers. At least impulse crimes due to guns can be controlled with a complete ban.

    February 2, 2011 at 4:04 pm | Report abuse |
    • May

Right. However, if there was a complete ban, arguably it would be much more difficult for criminals to obtain them, as there would be far fewer weapons available to be obtained.

May have you learned nothing yet? They will simply import them from other countries illegally or find ways to have them built, as they already do. All your stricter gun control/ban will do is put them at their mercy. Not a great place for any life loving human being to be. Argue until you are blue in the face but the facts remain unchanged.

Ya know the gun lobby, and gun advocates ALWAYS TALK about if the only ones that have guns are the bad guys, how do we protect ourselves? Well, when was the last time we saw on this CNN news where a good guy (other than an authority such as cops, sheriffs, law enforcement of all types) shot and killed a bad guy IN THE ACT? When? Is that once evey 25 years worth all the guns stolen and used against the good people virtually daily?

Good question but it should be addressed to the media. NRA magazine has at least 6 reports of private individuals saving their and/or their family's live each month. The press refuses to publish the reports because they have a liberal bias that tells them if they reports all the incidents where we have protected ourselves the rest of America will realize that the police are only there to draw the chaulk line around the body and write the report! Just because you don't see them does not mean that there are not hundreds if not thousands of incidents where legal gun owners have defended themselves and their families each year.

    • EnoughAlready!

Happened just 2 weeks ago about 100 miles from where I live, and has happened in the past in my own town. Just because you don't CNN reporting on it does not mean it isn't happening. Fact: guns can and do save lives from sick types who also have them, you just have to be cautious and smart in how and when they are deployed or unlocked. (btw theirs -the criminals- are often illegal weapons, so good luck with gun control being able to stop them from being used in violent situations when they can't even trace the darn things). You take away law abiding citizens guns and we will become Mexico #2. The criminals will run things and we'll all be scared inside of our own homes while police and military are stretched far too thin to protect anyone properly (as if they don't all have far too much on their plate to deal with already). It just does not make things better to have a scared cattle populace with no means of defending itself (again Mexico is proof of this. You would see a much different picture painted there if those who have lost loved ones to the drug wars took up arms and took the fight directly to the cartels, the cartels would be dead/out of business in short order) If being unarmed and at the mercy of thugs is what you wish, so be it, but please allow good and NORMAL people to defend theirs with what they have. You must realise the only reason we don't have large drug cartels operating openly in our country is due to fear of reprisal and being caught by armed citizens which far outnumber the police and military. Now add the police and military into the mix and you have some extra protection. Take away guns and you will see it all spill over and start claiming everything here as well (and if you think the governemnt can control it all you are sorely mistaken and in need of a wakeup call). The stricter gun control argument holds very little water against many facts. It is not the best answer, the best is still education and teaching your family/children well about the dangers of weapons and how valuable life really is. The fact remains countries with very strict gun laws do still have violent crime, and those citizens are COMPLETELY helpless to fight it and have to depend on a governemnt or police that have very few resources for their protection. The news is packed with stories of such things happening and it almost always ends badly for the innocents involved. I live in Alaska, guns here are numerous and displayed on the dashboard of 8 out of 15 vehicles or hung on a rack in the back window, we have a very low crime rate involving violent crimes. The reason, we protect ours and we teach our children about the dangers but the fact remains criminals don't want to be shot anymore than anyone else, and they run a very real risk of it if caught commiting crimes here. So again stricter gun control is no answer it's just grasping at straws in desperation.

Sorry...a bit long winded but it had to be said since so many speak about stricter gun control without doing any form of rational thinking beforehand.

It simply is not reported. Also, not many people have concealed carry permits. On top of that, most of this crime happens in school zones, where people don't carry, or in inner cities that have tight gun control laws that keep only gangs armed.

You would see it in the news if:

      a) The news actually reported it, as it goes against their agenda.
      b) If gun laws didn't keep lawful citizens from carrying into the most crime-ridden areas of our nation; the inner cities.
      c) If there weren't such a small percentage of people with concealed carry licenses.
