Aguilera flubs national anthem at Super Bowl

O say, can Christina have a do-over?

Christina Aguilera helped kick off Sunday's Super Bowl with a singer's nightmare, flubbing the words of "The Star-Spangled Banner" about 40 seconds into the song as tens of millions prepared to watch the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Standing at midfield at Texas' Cowboys Stadium, the singer-actress mixed a previously sung clause with the one she was supposed to be on.

Here's what she sang, with the error in bold:

"O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last [unintelligible].”

That fourth line was supposed to be: "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming."

In a statement released by her publicist, Aguilera explained what happened:

"I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place," the singer said. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Aguilera isn't the first person to have trouble with the song, as Time magazine's "Top 10 Worst National-Anthem Renditions" will remind us.

The list includes Michael Bolton's effort at a 2003 playoff baseball game in Boston's Fenway Park, where he had to pause midsong and check some notes before correctly getting through the same line that troubled Aguilera.

Aguilera sang the national anthem twice during last year's NBA finals. She delivered both performances without incident.

- CNN's Denise Quan contributed to this report.

forget the fact she forgot the lyrics...her singing was atrocious. i was embarrassed for her. the black eyed peas were also really lame imo. for a football game that is on too late for most kids, why was the entertainment comprised of act that are geared towards 14 year olds?

The Constable from Ottawa who sings both anthems at Senators hockey games does the best Star Spangled Banner rendition I've ever heard. Lyndon Slewidge, I think, is his name. Strange that a Canadian can sing our anthem better than anyone I've heard in the U.S.

Agreed, He is awesome! Christina would do well to watch how it should be done (by a proud Ontario Provincial Policeman)! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK87OCy1upA

Nothing could be worse then that nightmare halftime lipsync/auto-tune/lightshow... I couldnt stop watching the trainwreck unfold... The only person who at least tried to sing without the use of autotune was fergie... Who proceded to murder sweet child of mine in ways that make you cringe. Honestly forgot about Christina's messup after that. I dont feel too bad for her. If you were getting paid a disturbing sum of money to sing one song. You would have practiced it until the words were burned into your memory forever.
Simply shows that is doesnt require talent to be a performer anymore. A good promotion team (MTV) and Autotune is all you need.

Cant they just get someone to SING it NORMALLY. All the runs are too much, wreck the song, and scream "HEY, ITS ALL ABOUT ME". Just sing it.

Thank you! Talk about butchering the song. Sing for the nation and the fans, not yourself! Nobody is impressed with you showing off your vocal range. Just because you can do runs, doesn't mean you should.

Just like our latest choice for president, if you set your standards low enough, your goals will easily be achieved.

All you people who call her unpatriotic and judge her for a messup need to seriously get a life. Stop bullying people, america is suposed to be free yet all we do is judge eachother take eachothers rights away look down on others and start wars for money! So what if she messed up a bit? Its just a song. She is a fellow american who got up there and gave it a shot.that they thoght to change it up is comendable as well because they were exersising the right to artistic and social freedom.most americans dont know the words ither but theres nothing wrong with that. Because the true spirit of america is freedom to dream freedom to love freedom to try. Our forfathers would be blue in the face to see what has happened to our country, to see how many of this countrys citizens have devolved into spoiled brats living on conveinyence ready to pass judjment for the smallest indescrepancy! YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK!

Yeah, America is supposed to be free. But even a first grader knows the national anthem. Christina Aguilera offended me more last night then I have ever been offended. What kind of bimbo gets up on the worlds largest stage, and screws up the national anthem...of the country she calls home? I for one think she should go on national tv and apologize for last night. I wouldn't accept it, but then again, I wouldn't listen to any of her music if you paid me. The noise that comes out of me when I pass gas sounds better then her voice.

"YOU PEOPLE" ??? leave this country then, if you are so sick of it. This is not just a song.....it's the American anthem. Something you should be proud of! it's not just a song! In other countries she could be severely punished for commiting such attocity. Heck, in other countries she would not be let out of the house!
This is a great country. Period. And I AM proud of it AND it's anthem.
It is THIS country that ALLOWS her to sing, and get paid MILLIIONS for it. It is THIS country that allows her to botcher the anthem that way, and all we are doing is talking about how horrible it was.....FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Something you dont' have in other countries.

Why cant St. Jude combind with the Superbowl and have a group of adorable children battling/surviving cancer sing the song with pride and with a true appreciation for LIFE!? They could collect money during the game after the anthem and make a big deal about the amazing organization.

When is the league going to consider a serious singer who knows the words and gives the song and our country the proper praise? I don't mind a bit of variation, but to butcher the words? Come on NFL – come up with some one credible next year.

Come up with someone credible next year??? She has sung the national anthem several times without an incident. How are you going to determine credibility? It's not because a person is a professional that it means that he/she will never screw up. Statistically speaking everybody screws up at some point. But I guess this doesn't ever happen to you. Stop hating.

The National Anthem should be sung with pride and not altered (so I agree with those that said "NO REMIX!")
The fact that she messed up actually made me smile – just to think that she is HUMAN – just like the
rest of us. We all make mistakes. In the future, Christina, back it up, and remember that you are singing about ALL of us and our history in the U.S. – it's not a personal song that you need to get all tongue tied over.

If you're going to sing the National Anthem at the biggest sporting event of the year in front of an entire country, scores of celebrities, politicians and various other VIPS, and two teams who have worked their asses off all year just to GET there, you might want to practice the words. I'm not buying the "I got lost in the moment" crapola.
