Aguilera flubs national anthem at Super Bowl

O say, can Christina have a do-over?

Christina Aguilera helped kick off Sunday's Super Bowl with a singer's nightmare, flubbing the words of "The Star-Spangled Banner" about 40 seconds into the song as tens of millions prepared to watch the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Standing at midfield at Texas' Cowboys Stadium, the singer-actress mixed a previously sung clause with the one she was supposed to be on.

Here's what she sang, with the error in bold:

"O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last [unintelligible].”

That fourth line was supposed to be: "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming."

In a statement released by her publicist, Aguilera explained what happened:

"I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place," the singer said. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Aguilera isn't the first person to have trouble with the song, as Time magazine's "Top 10 Worst National-Anthem Renditions" will remind us.

The list includes Michael Bolton's effort at a 2003 playoff baseball game in Boston's Fenway Park, where he had to pause midsong and check some notes before correctly getting through the same line that troubled Aguilera.

Aguilera sang the national anthem twice during last year's NBA finals. She delivered both performances without incident.

It could have been worse – they could have had Justin err, Beaver? Cleaver? Creeper? Beeper? Oh – Bieber, singing the song.

She was too busy "scooping"–that is, trying to draw attention to herself (not the song) by singing as many "runs" as possible. It's such a lazy, undisciplined, "ghetto" style of singing that has caught on in "American Idol" America. Trying to ornament every single note by turning each note into 20 notes–all the notes in the scale above and below the one you're supposed to be singing. It's self-aggrandizing and musically sloppy. Stick to the MELODY and stop trying to show off and MAYBE YOU'LL REMEMBER THE LYRICS.

I love how all these internet losers who never accomplished a thing are blasting a person who has who made a mistake. Yawn, boring losers.

Enough already, she screwed up in front of MILLIONS, that should be enough for anyone, Usually the bigger the crowd you do it in front of the bigger the memory and less chance of repeating it... That desire to crawl under a couch feeling will be with her a long time...

I'm sure the spirit of Leslie Neilson was with her as she fouled up the lyrics 🙂

Feel bad for her but horrible just the same. Why don't they ever play the music also? Hearing a band play The Star Spangled Banner gives me chills. Christina gave me chills but for the wrong reason. Get a local singer, they can do just as well, if not better, than these big name folks.

"just kidding, but i'd dog her in a 3 a.m. voice mail or tweet she's a twit"

Damn shes ugly. Why does she look like snooki. But that singing is not as bad Carl Lewis rendition. His singing of the anthem was hilarious.

Whitney Houston had the best National Anthem ever. And she lip sank it. Has to be the hardest song to sing live period. People always mess that song up. Some people destroy it with there version's witch i think is far more offensive then Christina missing a line by accident. The song should be done by groups such as the Harlem Boys choir. Or any large group of people. It is bizarre though how many people have difficulty singing this song. But in all i think we all have more seriouse issues to be concerned about then her making a mistake singing our National Anthem.

How many different ways can the national anthem be butchered besides getting the words wrong? Many people insist on singing something like waeoaeiaoweaoooeieioaoeoiyueoi most of the way through the anthem.

It was an accident. Christina has performed this song before and did not make a mistake. Get over it.

As others have said, the National Anthem belongs to all. Sing it the way it was written so others can sing along. This is not the place to make your mark. A little humility please.
