Aguilera flubs national anthem at Super Bowl

O say, can Christina have a do-over?

Christina Aguilera helped kick off Sunday's Super Bowl with a singer's nightmare, flubbing the words of "The Star-Spangled Banner" about 40 seconds into the song as tens of millions prepared to watch the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Standing at midfield at Texas' Cowboys Stadium, the singer-actress mixed a previously sung clause with the one she was supposed to be on.

Here's what she sang, with the error in bold:

"O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last [unintelligible].”

That fourth line was supposed to be: "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming."

In a statement released by her publicist, Aguilera explained what happened:

"I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place," the singer said. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Aguilera isn't the first person to have trouble with the song, as Time magazine's "Top 10 Worst National-Anthem Renditions" will remind us.

The list includes Michael Bolton's effort at a 2003 playoff baseball game in Boston's Fenway Park, where he had to pause midsong and check some notes before correctly getting through the same line that troubled Aguilera.

Aguilera sang the national anthem twice during last year's NBA finals. She delivered both performances without incident.

We have so many great real -–singers-– in this country, so why the heck do we need to select some second rate 'pop' artist? "pop' is an abbreviation of 'popular'; realize that that word does not imply quality.
Of course, after Whitney Houston, who can better that?

One of the worst renditions of the National Anthem ever. She not only did not know the words but was off key on several of the notes.

Y'all are some very generous folks. She butchered the song trying to be "original." It would have been better to have simply heard a band play the melody.

Anyone sings this should be make to sign an affidavit saying that they will sing the song as written with the notes sung as per the original. If they want to perform for their fans, they can sing elsewhere and some other song. I am good and tired of performers doing this over and over again. We, the public, should not have to put up with this disrespect.

The Black Eyed Peas should really thank whoever it was that came up with a sound studio. They are just awful live. Some bands should seriously just lip sync.

Her performance aside....It's really, REALLY time to ditch that horrendous anthem, which everyone hates (and a few pretend not to hate,) and elevate "My Country "Tis of Thee" or "America the Beautiful."

  10. Really???

The sad thing is I have heard this song sung beautifully by members of our armed forces, police officers, firefighters, boy scouts, girl scouts & high school Jr ROTC students. It is not difficult to sing it competently. The best I ever heard, was an Irish tenor with the voice of an angel. This song is not "open to artistic interpretation" it is our national anthem for pity"s sake. What a pretentious self important twit!

As a professional, she has sun in front of thousands before. The national anthem is one song that should be sung as it is written. It should be sung with respect and not with the ad lib, no matter who is singing it. In my opinion, she was awful.

I I agree completely. Couldn't they have found someone else. I hope this sinks her career. Anyone out of the stands could have done a better job.
