Rep. Christopher Lee resigns amid reports that he tried to meet women on Craigslist

Rep. Christopher Lee , a New York Republican, has resigned after reports surfaced that the married congressman was trying to meet women on Craigslist, a GOP source told CNN.

Lee acknowledged making "profound mistakes" and said his decision to step down was voluntary.

"It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness," he said in a statement.

"The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately."

The allegations were first reported Wednesday afternoon on Gawker.

I'm not a Republican, but I don't see what the scandal is. Have we become so anal that we can't forgive this kind of thing? It's his personal life and no one is victimized by it. Nothing illegal happened, that I could see, so how does this affect his ability to do his job? And what difference does it make how people meet one another or hook up for a booty call? Who cares?

I don't know this particular Rep, but I'd figure if he's true to the GOP he's a god fearing type that obviously can't go around chasing other women. Don't get me wrong: they'll forgive him. But if he were a Dem...he'd be Satan and never welcome back in politics.

When you campaign as a responsible candidate with family values and then turn around and try and cheat on your wife, that kind of makes him a hypocrite and a liar now doesn't it?

Good points George, but it is a scandal. This man is a politician, and a representative of the people. These folks are expected to be held to high standards. Plus he is married. The GOP are always pushing for higher moral standards – yet this trifling dimwit isn't able to hold to his own parties' standards.

man, I couldn't agree with you more. This kind of "news reporting" is just crazy. So many of us go running around on this news, being critical, and having no clue about what their lives are like behind closed doors.

This type of news should be related to daily rags..........or, is that what cnn has become?

If he has preached abut family values and is a hypocrite then it is arguable right to step down. However, I think if he can do his job, he can explain, apologize and move on. I agree we are too quick to judge. Nevertheless, he chose to step down himself. Perhaps, he is not sorry and wants to keep up the fooling around? And for all you saints out there pointing the finger, grow up. Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone. By the way I am a dedicated Democrat. Regardless of what this guy did, you name-calling finger pointers should all seriously consider getting a life.

A lot of people care. They care that they were lied to and misled by him. They care that he is a hypocrit. They care that he isn't a man of his word. They care that he obviously has no respect or integrity for the vows he made to the person he supposedly cared about.

Despite how you seem to want a "it's none of your business as long as it's not criminal" type world, it just doesn't work that way. We want the people representing us to have integrity.

The problem is that the Repubs run on a platform of family values. They put themselves up on a pedestal beyond reproach, yet are nothing more than hypocrites. The ones that shout the most are usually the ones that are actively practicing the behavoirs they decry.

@George – I think you missed the part where it said he's MARRIED. There is a victim here – his wife. And, if he has kids, they are victims of this as well. Not to mention the folks who trusted his judgement to allow him to represent them.

I can't believe the people on here that are saying that it's no big deal. People cheat all of the time. ARE YOU SERIOUS? This sort of thing is what's wrong with politics, regardless of political party. And I'm LIBERAL!

More important than that he's married (as people cheat on their spouses all the time anymore) is that he idiotically posted pictures of himself on Craigslist for everyone to see, including his wife. What kind of idiot does that? Isn't that a no-brainer? Can he be trusted to make good decisions on behalf of other people if he can't even figure that out?

You know I read these comments regularly and am amazed at the name-calling that goes on. It seems if you don't agree with someone, instead of intelligent debate, you resort to attacking character and name-calling. Whenever I see someone say "Repugs" or "Libtards" I immediately know that person has nothing intelligent to say. This us versus them mentality is tearing the country apart yet both sides continue to fire up each side and widen the gap. With regard to Congressman Lee, I am in his district. He has been a fine legislator, more of a moderate than right-winger. I have had the opportunity to work with him on a project as well as Democratic Senator, Chuck Schumer. Both were great, regardless of party. When I read some of the comments on this page, I think it's safe to say that the people responding know nothing about Congressman Lee and instead see what letter is at the end of his name and make their decision without knowing anything about him. We tend to pigeonhole ourselves into these stereotypes for either party. Not all Republicans are bad. Not all Democrats are bad. Continuing to make generalizations about people because of what party they belong to does a disservice to intelligent debate, and makes you as bad as Beck and Rush and their mindless rhetoric.
