3 teenage boys among 7 Somalis facing death in Malaysia piracy case

Seven Somalis, including three boys under 15 years old, could face the death penalty if convicted on charges of firing on Malaysian armed forces while attempting to a hijack a merchant ship.

The seven appeared before a Malaysia magistrate in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to hear the charges against them. They did not enter a plea and were transferred to a prison to await the next court action, set for March 15, the Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported.

The charges stem from an attack on the container ship Bunga Laurel in the Gulf of Aden on January 20.

Malaysian authorities say the seven suspects fired on Malaysian navy commandos who were trying to rescue the Bunga Laurel from pirates. Three suspects were injured in the gunbattle, and the ship and its crew of 23 were rescued, according a report in The Star.

The Bunga Laurel was registered in Panama, owned by a Japanese company, crewed by Filipinos and chartered by a Malaysian company, according to news reports.

Prosecutors argued Friday that the attempted piracy endangered Malaysia's national security, providing legal authority for the seven to be tried in Malaysia, Bernama reported.

We can only hope the US learns from the actions of the Malaysian and South Korean governments on how to deal with these violent high-seas terrorists. The best defense would be "good old fashioned" US Navy and Coast Guard firepower. End of problem.

Absolutely! In fact, why even bother with a trial. We all know that they are guilty so they should just be killed now. Trials are such a waste of taxpayer money. So are laws for that matter. If someone appears to be guilty, just kill them and be done with it.

I suggest that it is basically never appropriate to execute a teenager. I would wager these youths have been subject to influences from which you and I have been mercifully spared. This is not to excuse them, or to advocate they should not be punished. But hanging them is not an appropirate response for a humane and responsible society.

These Pirates should never get to the point where they are in front of a court, that only further wastes resources of nations affected both in terms of legal costs and incarcaration costs. Scuttle them to the bottom of the Indian Ocean, it minimizes costs and serves as a deterrent.

I'm sure they were just out for a pleasure cruise when the military planted weapons on them and made it look like they had captured the other boat. Oh, maybe not... While I may think the death penalty is harsh (maybe life in prison would be more fair if they didn't kill anyone), maybe you shouldn't be committing these crimes in the first place since you're certainly taking the chance of being tried in a country that is going to go ahead an execute you.

For the 'sure, blame them without a trial / forgive them' crowd, they knew what they were doing. You can't realistically think that if you hired an army of 15 year-olds to go around pirating vessels with weapons that the only one guilty is you. And yes, wait for the trial, but the fact may show that they were pirating a ship when they were caught – hard to just be in the wrong place at the wrong time in a case like that.

Of course, I assumed sadly we have been over that for a while now. Now, I'm sure that doesn't apply here, but at the same time it isn't a logical way to approach the subject. Soon enough we'll be torching people all over again. All stemming from a hanging, you know which!

LOL...its kind of hard to argue the facts: they attempted to hijack a malaysian boat, attempted to kill malaysians and causing terror on the high seas. And so many eye-witnesses too. BUT I KNOW IN THE USA, this would be tossed in and out of court hearings, and a lawyer would come thru, saying these people were forced into doing such things. Well, you have a choice no matter what. When I was in Somalia in '92 we were there to deliver food to the starving. I was there to prevent the food from being stolen by well-fed armed thugs like these pirates.

For centuries Somalia has been ruled by thieves with weapons who rob and exploit those who grow the food and raise the livestock. Now they've got boats with motors and they want to try the same behavior on the outside world.

    • Brad

@ hopeland...actually, we put only a very minute amount of murderers to death (in the USA). Most end up getting life in prison (with the chance of parole in 25 years), or they plead insanity and are back out in the public within 10-15 years, OR THEY END UP GETTING A MURDER 2 judgement instead of capital murder (because it was a crime of passion). So I am glad to see at least one country is getting it right. These pirates MEANT to do harm to others, MEANT to kill a person of the military (if they were able and lucky enough too) and MEANT to cause terror on the high seas........DO WE REALLY WANT THESE KINDS OF PEOPLE IN OUR SOCIETY...Once again, that is what is wrong with America.

how's about because their country is desperately poor, the government is corrupt, and that is why this country has such a huge piracy problem. Take away the fishing that used to keep them employed, give them nothing to replace it...even teenagers get into the game. It's incredibly sad, the piracy is quite wrong and harmful to all concerned, but when people have no money and are starving, they take desperate measures. I feel very bad for these kids.

At what point is it not okay to put them down? 12? 9? At some point you have to say they're too young and look at other things like their surroundings which do influence behavior. People without structure turn into animals. I'm not even saying that 15 is too young. Maybe they do deserve to die, but I certainly won't celebrate killing a 15 year old. There are a lot of people blowing off work with some internet huevos out there talking really tough, who don't realize how easy their lives actually are.

Gracie50, you are incorrect. It's your haves and have nots that will enable this to continue. It has nothing to do with bleeding heart liberals. Bleeding heart liberals just understand that starving teenagers will do what ever possible to feed themselves and their familiy. BTW, I have no problem with somebody shooting a 15 year old on site if they have an AK pointed at them. That's self defense. And again, I won't say whether or not the 15 year olds should be put to death, though my gut tells me that a 15 year old can be rehabilitated (adults can, so why not a teenager who was never given a chance). What I will say is that there are a lot of people celebrating their punishment and that speaks of bloodlust. I cannot enjoy a condemned teenager being put to death, and I think that it's sad that they're in that situation, regardless of what they did.

Old enough to go out, take up arms, and try to steal or kill = old enough to die. Make an example of them. If I were 15 and told that I could make tons of money and the worst I will deal with is going to prison where I have a better chance at getting food, then I might do it. If I know that I might get hung or shot if I do the same, then maybe I choose a different profession.
