3 teenage boys among 7 Somalis facing death in Malaysia piracy case

Seven Somalis, including three boys under 15 years old, could face the death penalty if convicted on charges of firing on Malaysian armed forces while attempting to a hijack a merchant ship.

The seven appeared before a Malaysia magistrate in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to hear the charges against them. They did not enter a plea and were transferred to a prison to await the next court action, set for March 15, the Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported.

The charges stem from an attack on the container ship Bunga Laurel in the Gulf of Aden on January 20.

Malaysian authorities say the seven suspects fired on Malaysian navy commandos who were trying to rescue the Bunga Laurel from pirates. Three suspects were injured in the gunbattle, and the ship and its crew of 23 were rescued, according a report in The Star.

The Bunga Laurel was registered in Panama, owned by a Japanese company, crewed by Filipinos and chartered by a Malaysian company, according to news reports.

Prosecutors argued Friday that the attempted piracy endangered Malaysia's national security, providing legal authority for the seven to be tried in Malaysia, Bernama reported.

OMG – and I thought only bleeding heart liberals read CNN. All you capital punishment proponents need to now start telling your true feelings (as many of you have on the piracy issue) about what we need to do in our own country regarding illegals, the current administration and how they've totally screwed our future generations from attaining the American dream, the abhorant jobless rate (let's be real – 9% unemployment we're 1% short of having the same rate as Syria) and the list goes on and on and on!!!!!!!

If you are old enough to commit piracy on high seas, you are old enough to die. Basically I am against the death penalty but in this case I would look the other way.

They come from a very poor country and the gov't hardly exists. In thier way of thinking, this is the only way they can help thier families and villages. As they say in the movies; the is'nt personal, it's business. I'm not saying it is right, but that's the way it is.

I'm trying to picture those seven, each with a steel cable looped around his neck, tightening as the weight of their bodies pull down on the strands of wire, reducing the neck to no more than the diameter of the cervical vertabrae, severing the esophagus, trachea, jugular veins, and carotid arteries. The lower extremities dance for a few moments in an involutary action of trying to support the body. Then the body relaxes and lets go....

This is long overdue and I am glad that Malaysia is the pioneer to put these pirates to death! How can these primitive pirates take over so many cargo ships and nothing has been done by the owners? This death sentence should teach
the pirates a lesson including Sudan.

But pirates are cool! I saw the Hollywood movies! Living a life of depravity, leeching off civilization by robbing and killing innocent people is cool! Isn't that what American legends of pirates teach us?

Awesome. I wish we had laws like this. We either give them the ransom or capture them and give them a 1st class flight home to their native country only to do it again and repeat the cycle. Good for Malaysia!

Accountability. Responsibility. Here's the thing though: whenever an adult commits an atrocious crime against a kid I don't hear the public shouting for the death of the adult, but whenever a kid does anything remotely wrong, I hear the public shouting for the kid to be put to death. Nowhere on this planet do children have rights but they are the first we supposedly civilized adults want to hold accountable and responsible when something goes wrong. We don't hold ourselves to the same level of accountability or responsibility but yes we most definitely hold the children to it.

The seven probably should have been blown up on the water which would be an understandable response by the Malasian Navy or anyone reading these posts when people are shooting at you
