3 teenage boys among 7 Somalis facing death in Malaysia piracy case

Seven Somalis, including three boys under 15 years old, could face the death penalty if convicted on charges of firing on Malaysian armed forces while attempting to a hijack a merchant ship.

The seven appeared before a Malaysia magistrate in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to hear the charges against them. They did not enter a plea and were transferred to a prison to await the next court action, set for March 15, the Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported.

The charges stem from an attack on the container ship Bunga Laurel in the Gulf of Aden on January 20.

Malaysian authorities say the seven suspects fired on Malaysian navy commandos who were trying to rescue the Bunga Laurel from pirates. Three suspects were injured in the gunbattle, and the ship and its crew of 23 were rescued, according a report in The Star.

The Bunga Laurel was registered in Panama, owned by a Japanese company, crewed by Filipinos and chartered by a Malaysian company, according to news reports.

Prosecutors argued Friday that the attempted piracy endangered Malaysia's national security, providing legal authority for the seven to be tried in Malaysia, Bernama reported.

Whooaa, these pirates picked the wrong people to tangle with. Malaysians don't d1ck around. Those pirates should have gotten themselves arrested by Americans. We'd give them citizenship and a million dollar settlement for the mental anguish we caused them by arresting them. Probably buy them a new boat.

it totally gets me how a rag tag bunch including young men can take a broken down boat and overcome a massive ship, and about the death penalty for those young men,in this case maybe they can be reformed, fifteen is very young and somewhat nieve.

Very sad. I have nothin but pity for kid pirates and suicide bombers, but by the time I was a teenager I knew right from wrong. Enough is enough, if these kids don't have ethics at teen years there is no hope. Basically these kids are psychopaths and if their adults made them tha way we have an issue. We need to try and rehabilitate all kid soldiers if we can't when they hit 18 if their still at it they will be professional murders. Like the mafia. Give them a chance then if they continue bye bye.

Amazing, liberals love criminals and never worry about the victims.
unless they create a victim out of a criminal, then look out, liberal madness.

Funny, I'm a liberal and I think that the death penalty is both traditional and appropriate for piracy.
However, to be a proper deterrent I think that the executions must be public. (If you are going to make an example of someone, why on earth would you do it behind closed doors? It defies all logic!)

The fight needs to be taken to the camps and villages used by the pirates. Lets wipe 'em out before they take any more ships and lives.

@Skyking, I think the Malays will give some lashes first and then hang them. They even cane people for spitting gum on the sidewalk. FYI, they do cane ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and throw them jail for a few years. Then, they return them to their native country.

Maybe in their lawless country it might seem legit to commit piracy on the high seas and justify their actions. In international courtrooms, they will be held accountable and possibly pay the ultimate price in their own executions. Now they will know what it feels like to be a victim.Somehow,I and many others feel no pity for their wretched souls.Maybe Allah will forgive them.It is now time for them to become martyrs in his name.Your God is not that great after all!

@Dennis "I and many others feel no pity for their wretched souls." Agreed. They knew the risks involved in piracy, and especially the risks of getting into a firefight with a nation's military. Fifteen years is plenty old enough to understand the consequences of their criminal actions.

"Maybe Allah will forgive them. It is now time for them to become martyrs in his name." How does being executed for piracy add up to martyrdom? A martyr is one who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce their religious beliefs. Unless they were executed for adhering to their Islamic faith - not very likely in a nation whose official religion is Islam and whose population is 60% Muslim - they are not martyrs.

"Your God is not that great after all!" Last time I checked, both Allah and the Christian God are one and the same.

I'm supposed to feel bad for these failed murderers because they're young? Shooting a rifle at people is a dangerous way to say hello. Or am I supposed to believe they were shooting at the ship to do something other than harm? Were they bullets of love and friendship?

These teens would have killed if they'd had reason during their crime, and it's doubtful that they'd have given it a second thought. Why shouldn't they be given the death penalty? I'm a liberal – I believe that a rich country should use its wealth to take care of its people and, as someone who pays a substantial amount of money in taxes, I think that it's only right that those funds be put to good use, not to fatten the bureaucracy – but I also believe in a strong legal and penal system. Piracy is something that can't be tolerated, and examples should be made.

Though speak with forked tongue. We kill people in this fat, rich country called America. Put your money where your mouth is. Raise up the uneducated, the poor, the oppressed and you may, in 3 generations, stop much more crime than imaginable. Or...you can imprison, incarcerate, keep in poverty, and stereotype the less fortunate to death and get what we ask for...your choice

It is not my job to raise the poor and uneducated. They need to do that on their own. I started out working in retail, took out loans and went to college. I am by no means rich but am fully able to support myself. I don't need or expect help from anyone else.

Jeff T, you are so right. I went into the military and attended college that way. Why should I use my hard-earned money to pay for someone else to get a free ride. If I am going to pay for anyone, it will be my family, not someone else.

It is sad that so many people want to kill children. It is bad enough that people want to kill adults. Seriously, if you don't like the crimes committed do something to prevent the criminals from committing the crimes, but don't chose the un-ethical and immoral path of revenge by doing the same horrible crime to the perpetrator for the sake of vengeance and not justice. I would bet that the majority of voices asking that these children pay for their crimes with their lives are American. Sad...

Fair enough Malibu. Put your ideas in practice, travel to Somalia, and do show these patheticly poor and ignorant criminals how to have a better life in a country that has little in the way of businesses, suffers from chronic water shortages, and really has nothing in the way of a truly functioning government. Let's see how your optimism is able to deal with these problems. In the most real and cruel sense most countries see the Somali problems as being their problems until they project their corruption onto the sealanes. At that point they forfeit any impunity they once had on land and should be killed as soon as possible like the vermin they are.

When enough of these criminals are executed, the Somali thugs running these operations will either run out of men from sheer attrition, or because the incentive to join will disappear. In the west taking another human life though the courts is a long and tedious exercise that these pirates depend on. Until sentencing they enjoy better living conditions and food in our jails then they can get free in their own country. By reversing this to reflect trial, sentencing, and execution all taking place within 24 hours of capture, the message will be clear to stay off cargo and tanker vessels.

If only that were true. Unfortunately, the people running the show will always be able to recruit. When you have a country that is as this one, people need to eat. They have to find a way to buy food for their families.
