3 teenage boys among 7 Somalis facing death in Malaysia piracy case

Seven Somalis, including three boys under 15 years old, could face the death penalty if convicted on charges of firing on Malaysian armed forces while attempting to a hijack a merchant ship.

The seven appeared before a Malaysia magistrate in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to hear the charges against them. They did not enter a plea and were transferred to a prison to await the next court action, set for March 15, the Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported.

The charges stem from an attack on the container ship Bunga Laurel in the Gulf of Aden on January 20.

Malaysian authorities say the seven suspects fired on Malaysian navy commandos who were trying to rescue the Bunga Laurel from pirates. Three suspects were injured in the gunbattle, and the ship and its crew of 23 were rescued, according a report in The Star.

The Bunga Laurel was registered in Panama, owned by a Japanese company, crewed by Filipinos and chartered by a Malaysian company, according to news reports.

Prosecutors argued Friday that the attempted piracy endangered Malaysia's national security, providing legal authority for the seven to be tried in Malaysia, Bernama reported.

Yeah. I am sure the courts in Malaysia are REAL fair and none of the judges or prosecutors are corrupt. Whatever. You notice the article said they did not enter a plea and it also did not detail the charges. Did these pirates actually kill anyone? Apparently not, according to the article; so why do they deserve death? We don't know; the truth is it does not matter. Malaysia is a third-world banana republic run by Islamic nut-jobs. All you "conservatives" calling for blood are taking sides with the very people you and your disgusting little fat-faced prophet Glenn Beck routinely attack. You can't have it both ways: either you support Islamic Theocracy or you don't. GOP conservatives are all bloodthirsty hypocrites. These pirates may well be guilty, but they should be tried in a real court with real lawyers.

Malaysia a theocracy? Are you dumb? The country inherited the British Parliament.
Please also read the linked article, not just what CNN wrote. More details can be found there.
The Somalian fired at the Commandos, must the soldiers died before the pirates got the death penalty?

They have a show where they leave a "bait car" where car thieves will find it. Once the car is stolen, they lock the doors and apprehend the criminals.

Send out a "bait ship" where the pirates will see it and board it. Once they are on board, the ship locks down, trapping any pirates that are below decks. The ship is much lighter and faster than it appears, and turns to the open sea at high speeds. The little fishing boats the pirates use cannot keep up. The ship is surrounded. The ship then unlocks and the pirates are ordered to go out on deck. The ship then slowly submerges and the pirates are scooped out of the water.

It's really hard to shoot a wet AK47 while swimming for your life.

Then the ship resurfaces. Repeat as necessary.

If there are no pirate attacks for 30 days, one pirate who was under 18 when captured and has been in prison over 5 years will be returned to his family. When there is a pirate attack, on pirate who was over 18 when captured is hanged and the clock starts over at 0.

I do understand that the Somali people are hurting and I would like to help them. In fact, we did. Our aid prevented about 10,000 people from starving to death. They shot our aid workers and stole the food. Then traded the food for weapons to attack more aid convoys. When we tried to protect the aid convoys they showed "Americans shooting at Muslims" on the news.

At least we tried being good to them.

Yes, arm the ships, with two, four man teams. And while in port, put the weapons in the ships panic room and post a watch. Not that hard.

That reason is why I can't take most people over the internet seriously. If they really believe what they say, there would be a sort of irony to it. Ridiculous, nonetheless.

Wow, you are all so happy to see some teenagers hang. I wonder if you'd have the same zeal for teenagers in your own country to hang.

The trolling is strong in this article.

At least, I hope it's trolling.. or else, do people really have such a primitive way of thinking?

Hey everyone guess what ,after reading the comments it becomes obvious, not everyone realizes that Malaysia has it's own Laws.In the case of these Pirates, our public opinion is just that ,public opinion. The Malaysians aren't any more interested in what Americans think about these criminals being youthful than they are about future rehabilitation for them. We can observe, but we cannot interfere. We can complain, after that we could be most helpful by helping to bury the dead

If you want to stop this from happening, there's a very simple way. On all commercial ships that have to travel these international shipping routs, simple mount mini guns on the bow and stern, and on both sides. If and when pirates come to attack the ship, simply fire one burst in front of their boats as they're one and only warning, and if they don't stop, then blow them out of the water.

This may sound harsh and uncaring towards human life, but only when the risks far outweigh the benefits will they stop attacking shipping.

The real problem here is that many Somalis don't have many other options. They could die on the high seas or starve in their own war-torn country, and until the international community puts a real effort into it (unlike Clinton), then nothing will change. I'm not saying America needs to go in a make democracy and sunshines and rainbows, but until Somalia is stabilized, this will keep happening. Also, changing international maritim law so that merchant ships can have weapons would be an effective deterrent I think. It at least gives sailors the right to defend themselves.

As far as the kids go, they should be hung, for a couple of reasons.

    1) They knew what they were doing was wrong, bad situation or not.
    2) If this deters even one pirate from doing this in the future, it won't have been wasted. The fewer that return to port, the more discouraged they will be.

Besides, better than rotting away in a Malaysian prison for life or being deported back to Somalia.
