Woman rescues husband in tiger attack

A villager in Malaysia has his wife to thank after she charged a tiger that had pounced on him in the forest, according to the Malaysia Star.

Tambun Gediu, who is in his 60s, was hunting for squirrels Saturday morning when he heard some rustling in the leaves, he told the Star.

He said the tiger was upon him so fast he didn't have time to react, according to the paper.

“My first instinct was to climb a tree but the tiger pounced and started clawing me,” he told the Star. “I had to use all my force to push the tiger’s mouth away from my face while shouting for help.”

Han Besou, 55, who was several feet away, heard the screams of her husband and charged the tiger with a large soup spoon, bopping it on the head, the paper reported. The animal fled.

The attack happened in the Gerik Belum Forest Reserve, where the aboriginal Orang Asli people reside. The attack was unprecedented in the village, the Star reported.

The villager, who suffered wounds to his knees, head and neck, was in stable condition Sunday after being transferred to Hospital Raja Permaisur Bainun, state Wildlife and National Parks Department director Shabrina Mohd Shariff told the Star.

Wildlife officials were awaiting a permit Monday to chase the tiger farther into the jungle, the director told The Star.

He should have been hunting tigers instead of squirrels. More meat and a nice rug.

It was actually a squirrel disguised as a tiger. Why do squirrels swim on their backs? To keep their nuts dry! Hey, Why does it take more than one squirrel to change a lightbulb? Because they're so darn Stupid! (Spongebob)

Notice, they needed permission to chase the tiger further into the jungle. Anywhere else they would have had a hunting party out.

There's a reason that people should keep out of the nature preserves–it for the plant & animal life! NOT HUMANS! The tiger should press charges on that dumb villager......

I'm sure he was hunting squirrels for a good reason, like to eat, considering they live in a small village in Malaysia, not a big city. Ignorance is not bliss, Donna E.

Good one. That's where they live and farm and hunt. The tigers live there too. This wasn't a recreational hunting trip. It's their daily sustenence. They hunt in the same areas as the tigers every day.

@Donna, I happen to be an animal lover, myself, but your comment is out of line. Most places in Malaysia (indeed, around the world) have to be dual-purpose because there just isn't enough to set aside space JUST for the tigers. The forest is essential to the livelihood of the villagers...and the forest would never have been set up to keep people out. That would be a virtual guarantee that there would be serious poaching, and the tigers would have been the ones in the cross-hairs. Even in this country, we allow people to hunt in areas set aside for conservation, as long as they have the proper license and follow the rules. And even then, bears (and even moose) have been known to attack humans. When man and animal are in contact, they will also occasionally be in conflict.

DonnaE don't worry. The tiger had a discreet conversation with two crocs. Just wait til this guy goes for a swim.

In many countries the indigenous people are grandfathered in when national park boundaries are made - after all those folks have been living there for generations. You will find people on foot even in the East African parks.

Too bad another smuck did not bite the dust. Why are people living and destroying natural habitats?
Too bad there were no additional tigers to get rid of these squirrell hunters.

Squirrels can be pests. They destroy fruit tree plantations, and their bite carries rabies. What we need is more squirrel hunters, and less eco terrorists such as yourself. Had you been eaten by the tiger, we'd all be glad to post on your gravestone what you just wrote about hoping the tiger would kill the man.

People are part of nature. Anyone who honestly must hunt to put food in thier mouths should be hunting in a forest preserve. That is thier natural environment.
