The Colombian military has seized a 100-foot-long submarine capable of transporting eight tons of cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, news reports say.
The vessel was found in a jungle area in Timbiqui in southwestern Colombia on Sunday, according to a report from RTT News.
Colombian navy officials said the homemade sub had two diesel engines and sophisticated navigational equipment that would enable it to travel to Mexico while remaining up to 30 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
The vessel was set up for a crew of four but was unoccupied when found, RTT reported. Officials estimated it would have cost $2 million to build.
The submarine is just the latest example of crafts smugglers have made to try to get their illicit cargo past law enforcement.
Last year, VBS.TV got access to the Colombian naval base where many captured smuggling vessels are taken.
Paint it Yellow...~_~.
Well done gentlemen! very creative.
As we live a life of ease, everyone of us has all we need, sky of blue and sea of green in our coke filled submarine (ha ha)!
100-foot-long narco sub found in Colombia
I love those, especially with extra banana peppers!
wow!!!...anything to make a buck ...and hit a shnippa!!!
what do you mean by try? looks to me like they have been! probably a discarded older model!
ummmmm, narco sub? i know im an idiot but who says thats what it is? stupid people.....this might be obamas way of travel down yonder.........
Five
Five Dollar
Five Dollar Foot Long
90% of all drug trafficking submarines in Columbia were bought at a gun show in the U.S.
true story.
If only these guys would put their talents to better use. Imaging what someone capable of building a 100ft homemade submarine could do at Newport News or Electric Boat?
Sorry. Not hiring.
1. They could sell drugs.
2. They could get high.
Yep. Just what I want making my next boat.
Maybe this guy was fired from Electric Boat and opened his personal businesss... ðŸ™
Private industry building subs for the rich and not so famous... Nothing like having your very own sub to cruise lakes or even off the coast of californication.... Such talent wasted ...
umm probly because 8 tons of coke is worth a lot more than any legal business they could start.
They get high inhaling all those fiberglass resin fumes already.
What would the better use be? considering the cheap labor, the return on investment, and the artificially high value per pound of the product, this makes perfect sense.
probably would be able to make it to the fires of mount doom in mordor
Considering the smaller semi-submersibles could transport approx. $100 million per trip I'd say the guys making these subs are quite happy with their current positions. Tax free and no union dues.
You say their talent is wasted but they may be sailing the High seas on their newer version.
Building subs for 2 million a pop is a waste of talent?
If people can get drugs now, why not make drugs legal and tax them. That tax money could pay for rehab. Our drug laws are insane.
do you really think it would work to make "drugs" legal and tax it?
why pay $50 for a pack of joints with a tax stamp...when Joey Streetcorner will sell me the same for $20.
and since I don't have a job because I can't pass a drug test...now which am I going to buy?
the only difference is the prisons will be full of people convicted of tax evasion rather than possession will intent to distribute.
It would just put them in the same category as alcohol and tobacco and almost completely wipe out the illegal market. But hey, the current system is working so well, why change it?
The reason it's expensive is it's illegal. I imagine a 'pack' with 'tax stamp' wouldn't be much more than a pack of cigarettes. Legalization is the only way to somewhat control it, like cigs and alcohol
Samb499 – You clearly have never bought pot before in your life, but since you know of an actual drug dealer that will not only roll joints for his customers but will sell his customers said joints for only $20 for a "pack", please hook the rest of us up with that amazing deal. Get back to a teabaggin'
Samb499, you can grow your own tobacco and brew your own spirits but it's so much more convenient to just go to the store and buy those products along with paying the associated tax, why do you think it would be different for other drugs? Do you grow/raise your own food just because you can, or do you let someone else do it for you and pay the sales tax at the store?
@samb499 do you know joey streetcorner too?! I love that guy
Make drugs legal1 Isn't it bad enough now that we have drunk people going to work, driving vehicles, and taking care of our kids, and now you want to add "while high" o the mix! Excuse me for being dumb, but the way to fight a crime, is not by making it legal.
This isn't about marijuana, they are smuggling cocaine. Do you really want your kid to be able to pick up a couple of grams of coke at the corner Walgreen's? These drugs are illegal for good reasons that have nothing to do with money.
@robert: when these drugs like cocaine, heroin, morphine, etc. were all sold as over the counter drugs in the 1900's did you see kids going to pick it up? no. just like they don't go out and buy alcohol or cigarettes from walgreens now....
If all drugs were made legal and regulated as tobacco and alcohol are the school drug dealing all but goes away. "Do you really want your kid to be able to pick up a couple of grams of coke at the corner Walgreen's?" You do realize how asinine that is, right? Can kids walk into a liquor store to buy cigarettes or alcohol? No. Proper businesses are required to ask for ID. Drug dealers at your kids' school don't do that.
"Isn't it bad enough now that we have drunk people going to work, driving vehicles, and taking care of our kids, and now you want to add "while high" o the mix! Excuse me for being dumb, but the way to fight a crime, is not by making it legal."
You are excused for your ignorance is great. No one should be punished for being ignorant but they should be educated. Guess what? Despite drugs being illegal it's not stopping anyone from producing, obtaining and using them. You are surrounded by such people everyday. Stamping out the illegal drugs has had one impact. The number of kids using prescription drugs is up. Guess what else kids do to get high... Look up High by Asphyxiation.
Unless someone finds a way to change human physiology mind altering substances will not go away.
@ Sam, moronic, why don't you but moonshine rather than go to the liquor store?
Do any of you really believe that growing tobacco and brewing moonshine is near the same as growing pot for personal use? It takes a lot more effort and knowledge to do either in the amount that would be useful for anyone. Growing Marijuana is simple compared to the other processes
haha, ya because it is so hard for kids to find someone to buy cigarettes/alcohol for them. They dont have to know drug dealers to buy cigarettes, they just need to know someone whos 18.
Meth and crack are illegal because you WILL get addicted to them, and the addiction is nothing like a nocotine fit. No amount of tax dollars can fix that, it will cost the public a lot more as previously non-drug areas become infected with addicts.
Drunks run red lights, stoners stop at blinking yellows. Who's a bigger threat?
Hold on there. Why would you want to legalize something that you know will require people to go to rehab??/ Doesn't make sense.
@DT74–Another ignorant comment, but not surprising. First off, growing good pot is not that easy. You don't just walk outside, throw the seed in the ground, and get a beautiful plant with pounds of pot. A lot more goes into than that and you can do your own research to see how it's done. I've never grown tobacco, so I can't say anything as far as the degree of difficulty goes for that. You then talk about moonshine. I would like to know the last time you walked into the liquor store and came out with a bottle of 'shine. Oh wait, hasn't happened b/c you can't get it!! Any guesses why?! And just to go on the alcohol track, it's not a very complicated process to brew your own beer at home. Just stay on the net, hit up google, find a site, pay some moola, and they will send you a kit!!!! It's all about convience buddy and the fast paced world most of us live in necessitates it!
"... ready to launch"? Really? OK men, our 50 ton submarine is ready to launch so let's go get it out of the jungle. All together now – Heave Ho!! Yes, yes; the sophisticated navigational system is fixed. It won't end up 300 meters inland again. Arrgh Matey.
the picture was taken at low tide...
lol this comment made my boring 8am so much more enjoyable
I agree Bob. That just enlightened my day.
Thje new reality of the modern navy in today's world....
"Bearing 265...speed 10 knots...load torpedo tubes one & two...we'll use marijuana warheads with Zig Zag papers.
Concentrate our fire on the second surfboard. Fire one...fire two...Dive! dive!"
first pot catapults... next cocaine torpedoes. We laugh now.... actually I'd laugh even more if I actually got to see either one being fired. A+ for effort cartels.
It is made out of the same material as Cheech and Chongs van.
sad our technology has been out-soursed! look out u.s.a ,If they can biuld this what next?
Looks like your education was outsourced.
Too funny
Likes like an enlarged version of the kind you'd get as a prize in a cereal box. Do they use baking soda to make it rise?
ROTFL! I forgot all about those toy subs. I ate a lot of cereal in my day to collect many of those subs. I loved them!!!
2 Million bucks is pocket money to the cartel..
Makes one wonder how many subs they have
If they can build subs for 2 million bucks they could put China out of business..
Sou
If they can build one for that amount they could put China out of business..
Sounds like we been gettin stiffed 🙂 again
Why didn't they just buy a used sub from Germany. I'm sure they have a few left over from WWII...
Next year, they'll buy an old Soviet Typhoon class sub instead.
With American ;subs ability to distinguish all vessels from hundreds of miles away, how in the world do they get away with roaring two diesel motor's underwater undetected? Does any submariners know this, Thanks?
Too funny! Roaring diesel motors under water! The diesels run when the sub is operating on the surface. Submerged, they don't have the oxygen supply to run the combustion engines. Instead, they run on batteries. If this thing doesn't have batteries, its only an ill designed surface ship.
Troop, mainly because you listen to propaganda and don't even ask obvious, glaring questions like that one. How dare you ask such a question.. no matter which lie that's tried, it just doesn't make sense, so please stop asking questions. We can't do what is claimed, period.. otherwise ocean warfare as a concept would be entirely over.. and it's not. Still, hurry up and block your eyes, ears, and mind... take what you want to hear, and shout it loud enough to make it seem that it's true, and you'll have the TeaBagger recipe. Oh wait, it's also Obama's fault, right? Not a forty year policy that's failed us, jailed over 1% of the total population, and represents the largest prison population, both percentage wise and in raw numbers, that has ever existed in the history of mankind, excluding only the detention camps maintained by Nazi Germany. But sure, listen to the Teabagger party line, and for goodness sake, don't consider any possible line of thought or policy that can't fit on a bumper sticker next to your "truck nuts".
The tall fixed tower which houses the periscope, probbaly also acts as a snorkle for the deisel engines.
Hey theguy, I think it's time for your seroquel. Your thoughts are racing and your rambeling quite a bit.
I thought it was a valid question put in a funny manner..... "theguy" needs to take something to ~ chill ~ himself ...
VA, it's called a snorkel. They run just below the surface with the snorkel pulling in air and putting out exhaust. It's WWII technology.
TheGuy, go take your medications. You're off schedule and it shows.
Heh, sure thing. He asked a valid question, and the answer is "The claims your question are based upon are falsified, and simple logic shows that." I was tongue-in-cheek trying to encourage a little critical thinking.. but again, sarcasm doesn't have a font. As for the rest.. well, if you can't make it past the propaganda of the "All seeing All knowing USA", you most likely are in the Teabag crowd. If not, then I apologize- and encourage you to look around at the world. These are subsidized markets driven by both US demand and US price supports in the form restriction of flow. Supply and demand, folks.. the American Dream in action. The facts are facts.. over 1% of the population is in prison RIGHT NOW. Nearly 75% of that is drug related, either directly or crimes committed to support the cost of the drug habit. Now, you can go ahead and make your little prattle about whatever you would like.. but if you cannot face the facts... there's no helping you, you're just going to scream party lines anyway.
They are battery powered while underway. The diesel engines are to charge the batteries at night when they are surfaced.
Because they are traveling "1000s of miles away" in Colombia?
Because we're not seriously looking for submarines off the coast of Central America.
But what if they decided to load the sub with explosives and keep traveling north? Also the drugs are coming to U.S.A, . Why would we not be looking? The ability to detect from hundreds of miles away, we could sit off the coast of California and should be able to detect diesel motors 30ft. underwater traveling north off the coast of central america .I just don't understand why we aren't able to bust these subs every single time they travel.
what if they kidnapped the president? What if they blew the submarine up while close to the coastline? What if they smuggled more mexican immigrants into the US? What if George Bush got onto that submarine and sniffed all 8 tons of coke!!!??!?
OK, for fun, we'll try it the way suggested. It's loaded with explosives. They bring it north to US waters, NOW what?
Make a great, big splash? Park next to a ship and sink it?
We didn't track undersea traffic below a certain point south, our SOSUS network was designed to watch for Soviet missile submarines in the NORTH ATLANTIC.
And currently, our Navy is either in the Pacific, the Indian ocean or the Persian Gulf. NOT patrolling the south Atlantic.
Apparently, some folks complain about the tax bill from a huge military, even when they demand it do even MORE.
