[Updated at 8:14 p.m.] One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said.
"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a written statement.
The names of the agents weren't immediately released. It's not clear where the attack happened on the 567-mile route between the two cities.
According to ICE, the agency has about 30 officers assigned to its office in Mexico City. They work a range of issues, including drugs, weapons, currency and immigration.
An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.
U.S. law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities "to ensure the perpetrators of this unconscionable crime are captured as quickly as possible," Napolitano said.
"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.
The Mexican government "vigorously condemns this serious act of violence and expresses its solidarity with the United States government and the families of those attacked," Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Stop these negative black vibratiors and prey to Jesus fo souls of men.
babelfish letting you down again?
America needs to stop being in so many countries and end the drug war...Bravo to the Cartel they have my respect..
It's all fun and games until it hits one of your family members is addicted to drugs or stolen by the mafia. They have no shame.
They need to send undercover navy seals to wipe out the mafia families and followers. That way they can put fear in anyone who wants step up and play king of the mountain.
Larry, you're watching too much NCIS. Put the remote down, man! Just let it go!
Every single dollar, every single bullet spent by the narcos is courtesy of the US drug consumer.
You are totally right, its to bad that these "patriots" can't see that WE created this beast but instead of taking responsobility for it we blame Mexico, why? Because its easier than facing the truth. 80%-90% of all the GUNS and BULLETS they are using goes from the USA to MEXICO
Always blame the drug consumer. They did it for the middle east do it for mexico too.
eod herrera?
Napo's words are empty unless the Marine Corps arrive.
Sure, give Obama one more thing to spend money on.
Enough already. The U.S. should cut off diplomatic relations, trade and any monetary aid, send troops the border and not let a living soul over the border until the government gets their act in gear and obliterate the drug cartels and start taking care of their own people for once, instead of encouraging them to steal away to the U.S. for us to take care of.
That's really stupid , think twice before you said something..:.........
Right on. Mexico sucks.
Invade Mexico? First of all we cant afford another war, especially one on that scale the full weight of the Drug war that has been going on for decades will come crashing down on everyone involved. Seriously? Why WOULD THE U.S. GOV. SEND ICE OFFICIALS TO MEXICO? That's were all the people who they deported are!!!!! I mean, this drug war has got to stop....This is getting out of control and the blind ignorant sheep in this country keep saying "invade" "war" "kill" exactly what the politicians want to hear...IDIOTS!
Why not look at the job description of an I.C.E. agent before posting retarded questions?
Mexico is such a dirty corrupt filthy f*ing pathetic excuse for a country and should be removed off the map completely.
invade mexico, or we all regrat it later, imagine narcos and islam terrorist working together soon or later they will find the way to harm us big
"Breaking News"?
Is this even the first attack this week? Sounds like fear mongering by DHS, CNN, or both. Now, all we need is to give them a state funeral and invade Mexico.
Poor guys, what usa need to do is send the troops and clean the house, starting with the mexican goverment, cause their working hand with hand with the cartels including president calderon, all he is doing is what el chapo guzman tell him to do...chapo guzman is the head of cartel de sinaloa...
Why is Mexico in charge of the investigation? FBI Supposed to be in charge of murders of US Citizens in foreign countries.
He stopped being a citizen when he enlisted with the federal govt. IMHO, he's one less goon on the government gravy payroll. Sigh, I'm sure he'll be replaced. Perhaps with two people.
It was either random (they were likely driving late model SUV), or, the Mexican government was in on it. So much behind the scenes we will never know. I am sure it will all be covered up though.
It only seems logical that the US should barge into Mexico and take over, after all, we have the military to do so but the Mexican government doesn't want that. They are all being compensated by the cartels, all the way to the top. Once Al Queda attacks us somehow in connection to the border and Mexico, that will be it. I predict it will happen in the next 5 years. I wish we would pull out of the middle east and help Mexico (not that they really want the help though)
.....Meanwhile...In the jungles of Cloumbia...I'm loading a sub with 6 tons of pure Cocaine..uh..I mean coffee.
Shh don't tell anyone!!
This is nonsense. Drugs are a political commodity. U.S. determines which drugs are legal and illegal. If it can't figure out how to profit from cocaine or heroin, it will categorize them as evil and prosecute users and dealers. On the other hand, alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs are all legal and heavily taxed. All drugs laws should be abandoned and this idiocy will stop. Politicians have failed us again.
The pharmaceutical companies would never allow legalization of cannabis. People would self-medicate, and their profits would drop sharply. They have to figure out how to diversify into the growing medical cannabis industry. Once they suss that out, we'll see that drug, at least, legalized before you can say "don't bogart that joint."
