ICE agent killed, another injured in Mexico shooting

[Updated at 8:14 p.m.] One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said.

"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a written statement.

The names of the agents weren't immediately released. It's not clear where the attack happened on the 567-mile route between the two cities.

According to ICE, the agency has about 30 officers assigned to its office in Mexico City. They work a range of issues, including drugs, weapons, currency and immigration.

An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.

U.S. law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities "to ensure the perpetrators of this unconscionable crime are captured as quickly as possible," Napolitano said.

"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.

The Mexican government "vigorously condemns this serious act of violence and expresses its solidarity with the United States government and the families of those attacked," Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

- CNN's Jeanne Meserve and Nick Valencia contributed to this report.

invade mexico? take down the drug cartels? too many rich americans would lose a lot of money if we ever took down the us-ran drug cartels in latin and south america. all the lives lost in these bloody drug wars means nothing to the rich white man that is sitting at the top of the chain making all the money. weve stolen all their natural resources for our greedy worldwide corporations, assassinated their presidents, and running drugs through their countries is just one of the many things we do also. no matter how secure you ever made the border, someone is paid off to bring anything into the country

What is your satanic crisis to lash out at fellow man on the Internets?

It is not superior, your corrupt, twisted thinking.

Be holy. Leave the black vibratiors alone. Stop your drug use, it rots away your sensibilities.

close the border==no trains, planes, auto, truck, people trying to walk thru–boats, all sounds great.
but how many of you will stay with this when everything you buy goes up–food, appliances, clothes, electronics=etc.
it would that the u.s. years get get factories back to this country, up and running, and of course the pay will be higher
then 1 dollar per hour. oh yeah epa restriction will also kick in–etc. are you ready for this or just talking out our butts.

A quick search of the web shows: "At least 10 Dea Agents and 51 FBI agents murdered in Mexico between 2007 and 2009." So lets be clear, while this may be the first Ice Agent killed in Mexico, its not a safe place to be for American's, or US Law Enforcement. Of course JN says the Arizona border is a safe place, I doubt she or her mouthpiece Pistole would vacation there. TIime to light up the cartel members, even if the Mexican government doesn't like it – or pull out our people all together.
