ICE agent killed, another injured in Mexico shooting

[Updated at 8:14 p.m.] One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said.

"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a written statement.

The names of the agents weren't immediately released. It's not clear where the attack happened on the 567-mile route between the two cities.

According to ICE, the agency has about 30 officers assigned to its office in Mexico City. They work a range of issues, including drugs, weapons, currency and immigration.

An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.

U.S. law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities "to ensure the perpetrators of this unconscionable crime are captured as quickly as possible," Napolitano said.

"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.

The Mexican government "vigorously condemns this serious act of violence and expresses its solidarity with the United States government and the families of those attacked," Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Invade Mexico? Mexico is not the problem. The drug cartel supplies this country with the drugs users in Americans need or want. There's obviously a big demand for it. Legalize all of it and tax it. Enough lives in the U.S. and Mexico have been lost over this stupid endless battle.

Invade Mexico? If this was to happen, the whole continent of Latin American including the Caribbean island will united and then things will go down hill fast for the U.S. This war will go on for years so I don't think this is a good idea. What the U.S government should do is to send more boarder patrol agents to protect the boarder The United states is in need of new jobs, so why not new agents.

So you want to expand the federal government? I though many Americans are afraid of a bigger BIG BROTHER?

Carrie, that's a totally ignorant statement. "They like it like that" These people are terrified is what they are. You stand up to them, you are dead. This has been proven time and again by brave people trying to make a difference. If you knew anything about it, it would be obvious. Something needs to go down, but it needs to be big, it needs to be forceful, and it needs to be constant for as long as it takes for them to get their freedom. Mexico used to be a nice little mecca. "They like it like that." Twit.

All these dumb people saying to take the US military down to Mexico are a bunch of idiots. What is this act going to cause? Think about it, there is going to be riots, martial law will probably be in effect. It wouldn't be a good situation. Most of the violence is taking place on that side of the border. What needs to happen is that the Mexican government needs to step up and take care of THEIR problems. And the US needs to take care of THEIR problems. And it all ultimately comes down to the American population and their wanting for drugs. If there is no DEMAND there would be no SUPPLY. Americans must love drugs so much that the cartels don't care who they kill because the reward is so much (money). So people like "Laura and Joe" spewing hate on these boards please think before you speak. And for the two men the were shot, I am well sure they knew what they were getting into. Don't go around fire expecting not to sweat. I am in the military and I know we are in war so when I deploy and something happens I know for dam (spelled wrong on purpose) sure what I was getting my self into.

So tell us, (Texas) Governor Perry, how are all those PROMISES you made to the people of Texas to "Protect the Border" working out for you? 3rd term governor and hasn't done a damn thing about the borders. Now, over 3,000 TEACHERS are going to be laid off in the Dallas area alone. Thanks Gov. Perry. Great job! Oh, and how is that rented, $10,000.00 a month mansion working out for you,? Guess the taxpers are paying for that also... Good job again! You have failed our state since you took office, yet your "friends" keep voting you back in. What's in it for you, since the students and teachers will now suffer because of YOU?

I can't believe how there are so many idiots on here making such cold comments. These men and women are in the belly of the beast trying to make a difference as these people pose a threat to our national security. We should be thankful and appreciate the heart and balls these people have.

The guns that killed this agent were most likely purchased with profits from controlled substances. A profit that is artificially inflated by the War on Drugs / National Drug policy. If they couldn't make the profits they couldn't buy the weapons.
