ICE agent killed, another injured in Mexico shooting

[Updated at 8:14 p.m.] One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said.

"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a written statement.

The names of the agents weren't immediately released. It's not clear where the attack happened on the 567-mile route between the two cities.

According to ICE, the agency has about 30 officers assigned to its office in Mexico City. They work a range of issues, including drugs, weapons, currency and immigration.

An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.

U.S. law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities "to ensure the perpetrators of this unconscionable crime are captured as quickly as possible," Napolitano said.

"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.

The Mexican government "vigorously condemns this serious act of violence and expresses its solidarity with the United States government and the families of those attacked," Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

When you go to a foreign country, you are responsible for your safety. You should have no expectation of any protection beyond what you can provide for yourself so quit whining.

Legalize harmless marijuana. Tax it like alcohol (which causes much more death and violence than marijuana) and cigs (which cause much more death and health care costs than marijuana). U.S. out of debt within 5 years. No brainer.

We took out Gen Noriega who was running drugs and he was also US trained and an ally at one time. There is not just a single target to attack in Mexico and the politicians are as corrupt as the drug lords. I for one hope the border will be closed at least for a time. Isee in my own town of American jobs gone to Mexico for cheap labor while the unemployment in my town goes up.

They need God to come in them. Bless their hearts. They need it but want it the hard way. They are vapid containers. Too much drugs and espousing evil again.

  11. Come on guys!

IT'S NOT MEXICO!!! sheash, don't go around shouting kill everyone in mexico. Thats not the American way. Think about it. The organization works on stopping the trafficking of drugs, and the dozens of super powerful drug cartels in Mexico probably got enough shipments intercepted enough to really get them to go, find a few agents, and set up hits on them. I think that we should apply more pressure on the drug cartels, and justify the officers death with arresting the b*******s with the crimes of drug trafficking and thousands of murders.

I think I've already heard Napolitano' statement somewhere...mmmmmm oh yeah when the lady was shot in the head in Arizona. Napolitano should stop copying statements from someone else and she should start doing her job better or why not she should present her resignation and go where she really belongs......the kitchen!!!!!!!!!

Lament for the dead grandmother in GA some cops lied about when they killed her.Planted drugs too. Made up story about a drug search. Then cry about a dead cop. The innocents have families and HAD lives too.
Nepolitano is a windbag of epic proportion. Glad to see the herd being thinned.

The uh "normal" people are not online using their narrow minded ideas to solve complex problems. The normal folks are working, making love, or spending time with loved ones. As you can tell none of these people have loved ones. They are either communists, rednecks, or alien hunters. The list goes on. I pray they don't represent the majority of Americans.
