[Updated at 8:14 p.m.] One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said.
"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a written statement.
The names of the agents weren't immediately released. It's not clear where the attack happened on the 567-mile route between the two cities.
According to ICE, the agency has about 30 officers assigned to its office in Mexico City. They work a range of issues, including drugs, weapons, currency and immigration.
An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.
U.S. law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities "to ensure the perpetrators of this unconscionable crime are captured as quickly as possible," Napolitano said.
"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.
The Mexican government "vigorously condemns this serious act of violence and expresses its solidarity with the United States government and the families of those attacked," Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Look, nobody is going to be safe until we get those darn libturds ot of office. They started this fiasco by putting Napolitino in charge as she knows nothing about homeland security.
You are seriously out of the loop, dude. The killings happened in Mexico because some twink named Bush cut a deal to send ICE agents into a foreign country where they don't have any rights. Napolitano has nothing to do with this, except she has problems with expressing herself well.
Hi there. I'm Mexican and I live in Mexico. First of all, I'm pleased of the fact that there are many intelligent Americans who understand the source of this problem and therefore are capable of providing an actual solution. That being said, I just can't understand why is it so difficult for many people to comprehend the concept of Demand and Supply. Of course, there's an important drug market in Mexico, but it's not a secret that most of the business is done in the US. If there weren't so many junkies in the US and if drugs weren't such a basic element of the modern American way-of-living, neither the US or Mexico would be experiencing the consequences of this stupid war. The strength of the drug cartels relies on the weapons used by them, and for those who are not aware of this, Mexico DOES NOT produce weapons. All of these are made and cross the US border into Mexico. Evidently there's a lot of corruption on this side of the border but rather than thinking that sending US troops to the border is a good idea, you should realize that there are MANY US agents that have been corrupted. For God's sake! You own the best military technology in the world but you are unable to detect all those packages of drugs crossing the border? Come on! Many people in the US are involved as well. In fact, we've put in jail or killed many drug lords but... when was the last time some white-neck executive or politician has been arrested in the US for being related to drug business? You'll probably hate me for typing these words but you know it's the truth. On behalf of Mexico I'm sorry for your ICE agents but in case you don't know, I lost 30,000 fellow Mexicans on 2010 because of the same issue. This is not a Mexican problem, this is a US-Mexican problem, and in fact, this is a worldwide problem. Greetings from Mexico.
Bravo, Bravo. You are very concise of words, unfortunaly there is a lot of rednecks in this side of the border who just care about seeing people dying and blame the others of their actions.
Very good article, untill you expressed your true feelings by using the term White-Neck
That is your problem if you don't believe in God.
Sure Glem...
SO WHAT DO YOU EXPECT JANET? THE U.S. HAS COLONIZED THE WORLD WITH IT'S MILITARY AND NOW THE NEWLY ORGANIZED HOMELAND SECURITY. OR IS THAT THE FATHERLAND SECRET POLICE?
IT COMES WITH THE JOB. THEY WERE READY TO KILL OTHERS ALSO. CRIME FIGHTERS FROM THE U.S. IN MEXICO. HOW ABSURD AND DELUSIONAL TO THINK THIS IS AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE. AND TO OBFUSCATE THE ISSUE SAYING IT IS AN ATTACK ON AMERICA IS NUTS. WE WENT TO MEXICO TO FORCE A SOLUTION, THEY DID NOT COME TO THE U.S. TO HELP UP STRAIGHTEN OUT DOMESTIC DRUG PROBLEMS THAT STEM FROM BAD LEGISLATION AND POOR ADMINISTRATION. LEGALIZE WHAT IS NOT ENFORCEABLE, CLEAN UP THE SITUATION, AND STOP EXPANDING OUT A PHONY MANDATE TO DO WHAT IS NOT DO-ABLE. BURGEONING BUDGET DEFICITS FED BY PYRAMID BUILDERS.
HIGHLY UNFORTUNATE AN AGENT WAS KILLED DUE TO AMERICA'S WISH TO GRASP THE WORLD BY THE THROAT AND NOT DEAL WITH SITUATIONS IN A REALISTIC WAY. IT IS A PICTURE OF FAILED POLICY AND MANAGEMENT.
Oops! You made sense, so you don't belong here... 😉
There are many people who deserve the blame. Obviously users share in the problem, but most users are introduced to drugs from predatory drug dealers. I say fix the sources in Asia or South America. America could legalize pot too as well as strengthen border security. You could choke off many sources of money at once which would cripple many cartels. I like the idea of bombing their haciendas too. It's a war that needs to be fought like one. Enough blame. We know how to fix it.
One less chancho in the world #friedthepolice 🙂
Wow! I am amazed at the ignorance of some of the bloggers. Let's not blame the victims. They were there because they were following their directives. America has a hard enough time fighting this pathetic drug war, without morons criticizing the victims. Grow a brain losers! You sure don't have a heart.
My condolence, to the family of the agents family that died. And hope for a quick recovery for the wounded agent. I am sure they were not site seeing or out for a Sunday drive.
Well if I had not lived, worked and visited "Good Old USA. My opinion would be much different. When I read the comments, from the bible totting, pot smoking, jack boot commandos. No wander in some parts of the world the Americans are disliked. Not just the Middle East. Your county is militarily and dollar bankrupt.
One suggestion, stop buy the drugs. USA is the major Mexican market. Some filtering into Canada. Also remember Mexico is a third world country.
Military action is not the answer. A much wiser person than me has the answer.
okay why is Mexico starting to become a bad place for people to vacation
@Kate, because of drug and human trafficking. If you go Kate, small chance you will be kidnapped. Your family will need to come up with a few thousand to let you go, and that's after they rough you up. Some of the police are corrupt, so don't call them for help. You need to duck bullets quickly as the drug war continues. Many more reasons, but can't hog up this thread. Enjoy your trip. Adios.
@elimonjal: What planet are you from? I'll go with the odds. I'll take an American cop over a Mexico cop anytime. There is much more corruption in Mexico's police force than here. Why do you think they send the military to do their job; for a picnic?
Is it time to invade yet?
@Darrin-No, but the illegals are working on it.
80-90% of the guns and bullets These Mexican Thugs have are from America? Well, I can tell you one thing for sure...no Tea Party Patriot Conservatives sold them to 'em. Who
does that leave? Libs Dems and perhaps even Reps.Which one are you a supporter of?These men died working for OUR BOARDERS THAT ARE MEANT TO PROTECT/SHEILD US from such vermin. If oBAMa kept his so called promise's re the number of National Guard Troups he was going to post along our boarders, perhaps this could have been prevented. God help their families and friends. I never met them, but they died trying to make a (+) difference, protecting US.
What is it was YOUR state that these people were "mosey-ing" into? Perhaps YOUR backyard a family members back yard? What if those agents were your brother or sister? Such blind hatred and disregard makes me feel soo sad...this is what America has become? Dem against Rep, Dem Against Conservative, libs against conservative....these are "OUR" Borders to "OUR" country!! Hello? Does anyone one have any common ground even re OUR SAFETY? OUR hedge-way of security that protects US (you and I and our kids), our families and friends, our homes and property? Where is the remorse for "OUR" lost and injured boarder patrol agents?!!!
Where is the common bond? Gotta spew hatred at the tea party, the conservatives...WAKE UP...this is about OUR...(that means MINE AND YOUR) .....HOME!!!Is DIVISION NEEDED when it comes to such things? ???? How Sick. How Sad. How hatred BlINDS the subject matter as well as exposes foolishness.
