Sun has biggest solar flare of the year

If you live at a high northern or southern latitude, watch for some spectacular lights in the sky Tuesday night.

The sun unleashed its strongest solar flare of the year Sunday, and the cloud of radiation it spewed will hit Earth's magnetic field Tuesday, NASA said.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a brief but intense flash signaling the ejection of a cloud of ultraviolet radiation.

The source of the flare, sunspot 1158, is growing rapidly, the observatory reported.

Hey CW, I think you missed the point – he said to plan for life after the end of the world. I find it humorous how everyone always assume they will be part of the 0.1% that survives.

We ARE coming into the solar maximum, where the most sunspots and storms happen.
And THIS cycle is predicted to be pretty significant, as it's the same magnetic storm that dropped power in Canada in 1989.
So, it's going to be a bad couple of years for satellite operators and some power companies up north.

FIRST X-FLARE OF THE NEW SOLAR CYCLE: Sunspot 1158 has unleashed the strongest solar flare in more than four years. The eruption, which peaked at 0156 UT on Feb. 15th, registered X2 on the Richter scale of solar flares. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation. X-flares are the strongest type of solar flare, and this is the first such eruption of new Solar Cycle 24. In addition to flashing Earth with UV radiation, the explosion also hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) in our direction. The expanding cloud may be seen in this movie from NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft. Geomagnetic storms are possible when the CME arrives 36 to 48 hours hence. Stay tuned for updates.

      :Issued: 2011 Feb 14 2200 UTC
      # Prepared jointly by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NOAA,
      # Space Weather Prediction Center and the U.S. Air Force.
      #
Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 045 Issued at 2200Z on 14 Feb 2011
IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 13/2100Z
to 14/2100Z: Solar activity has been moderate Region 1158 (S21W14)
produce an M2/1N flare at 14/1745Z associated with a 150 sfu
Tenflare and a Type II radio sweep (estimated velocity 1479 km/s).
Region 1158 also produced seven C-class events the largest being a
C9 at 14/1253. This region continued to grow throughout the period
and is currently magnetically classified as a Beta-gamma type
spotgroup with an area of 450 millionths.
IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low
to moderate with a chance for an M5 or greater x-ray event for days
      one thru three (15-17 February).
IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 13/2100Z to 14/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been quiet to active. A sudden impulse was
observed at 14/1600Z (12nT, as measured by the Boulder USGS
magnetometer). Solar wind data from the ACE satellite indicated a
shock arrival at 14/1456Z. Solar wind velocities increased to
approximately 410 km/s and total field increased to around 20 nT
following the shock. The source of today's activity is likely an
east limb event that occurred at 11/2146Z. The greater than 2 MeV
electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the
      period.
IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be predominately quiet to unsettled with isolated active
periods on day one (15 February). There is a slight chance for
isolated minor storm periods on days two and three (16-17 February).
The increase is forecast due to the expected return of a recurrent
coronal hole high speed stream and the arrival of a CME from
      yesterday's M6 event.

Everything that eugenia said was accurate. However, the CNN script and headline writers got the day or occurrence (it happened really on Valentine's Day evening) wrong and hence we more likely should see aurora on Wednesday evening and night. Neat story, nevertheless! And spring and fall of the year is when flares and coronal mass ejections are most likely to tear up things like power grids!

See, the Clintonistas, who (everyone knows) are in cahoots with the uber-capitalist Red Chinese, actually launched a secret solar targeted nuke from Arkansas on the week the birds were killed (collateral damage, you know). And, as everyone can clearly see, the Chinese, who have better atmospheric coverage, and are preparing for space-sourced catastrophes, and have a billion more people than anyone else, are invested in creating a polar crisis to distract the developed countries of the west ("Ooooh, Ahhhh! Nice northern lights there, eh?") while they quietly invade! Waddaya think?

Dead birds was more likely caused by something else. We have been have mass animal deaths by the dozens around the world for the last year. If you check the graphs, it hasn't happened much at all until about april or may 2010. Now suddenly thousands of fish, birds and land animals are mysteriously dying around the globe.
