Sun has biggest solar flare of the year

If you live at a high northern or southern latitude, watch for some spectacular lights in the sky Tuesday night.

The sun unleashed its strongest solar flare of the year Sunday, and the cloud of radiation it spewed will hit Earth's magnetic field Tuesday, NASA said.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a brief but intense flash signaling the ejection of a cloud of ultraviolet radiation.

The source of the flare, sunspot 1158, is growing rapidly, the observatory reported.

@Minos...get out your dictionary. "Religion" def. 'form of worship'. We are all, to a man, religious. We either worship ourselves, or money, or etc., or we worship God. Your religion is that which occupies the majority of your mind. You, Minos, are a religious person in other words. And you yourself attack religion as if it were "man-made"., yet you fail to attack the man who made the Christian religion. For in doing so, you would have revealed your true hearts condition. For really, is there not more worthy of attacking in todays lawless world than a man named Jesus? Who in their right mind would single out Jesus, with his lofty ethic and hope for mankind, over a mere warmonger or commin crinminal?

What the hell are you rambling on about, Philip? Are you "speaking" in tongues again? If I told you once, I told you a million times, that taking your meds and writing blogs on solar flare events is a toxic mix. Nothing good can come of it. Opens the doggy door of your soul to the devil.

Wait, i know this rant. 'I am like god, and god like me. I am as large as god, he is as small as I. I cannot below him, or he above me, be'. Right?

"common" criminal, rather. It always cracks me up when people attack the Christian religion, yet fail to attack the men, Jesus and hus early followers, without who we would not even be aware of Christianinity. (save for the total misrepresentation of being a true Christian set forth by those "religions" who make God seem cruel(as in God would even think about allowing even his own disobedient children to be burned aliive, forever) or just plain stupid! (as in god created this earth in a matter of days, a proven scientific impossibiity)

@Minos...it takes light from thr Andromeda nebula nearly 2,000,000 years to reach the earth, yet religions misreprsesenting God's word the bible, claim that that everything was made in a matter of days. No wonder then, that you, Minos, do not believe them. For where the bible is silent on how long it took God to create the earth and the universe, false-religious teachers proclaim that tghe earth was made ib just a few short days. ("In the begibnibg, God created the heavens and the earth" says God's word. And then, God's word describes God spending a few of HIS days, not our puny little 24-hour days, preparing the earth for his children to inhabit. No wonder people have trouble believing in God...when those claiming to represent Him, misrepresent his word.

      @ Phillip:

God's Days? Wasn't that a George Burns line in "Oh God!"?

"Of course one of my days doesn't equal one of yours. For example, when I got up this morning, Albert Schweitzer was still in med school."

So, either the writers of the 1977 classic, "Oh God!" stole your brain, or you've been watching way too much late night TV. Suppose it's better than calling all those 900 numbers to talk to hot girls.

Take me home....country roads....to the place where I belong....

      Hmm....

Since he was in the movie, do you think John Denver got a free ticket to heaven?

it is good to see people standing up for the Christian religion. thank you for that, not many ppl would do it. my question is, is why is the Christian religion the only religion being attacked. out of all of the religions out there the Christian one is the one that ppl are trying to shut out. i don't force my belief on anyone, yet others try to push the idea of there not being a God on me. why are non-believers so hell-bent on trying to prove that God doesn't exist, and get mad when we tell them that we believe he does. oh, by the way, they did prove that mosses crossed the red sea, look it up, then let the non-believers tell me that God is not real.

Mankind does mess up religion by putting their own twist on religion. I see that Philip.

@Cesar...yes, you do see that, my friend. And I saw in you, Cesar, not long after we first met, that you have eyes that see and are not blinded. And am so happy to see you again, for I have been away for a while. (smilie)

@Minos...you make it seem to all who read these posts that I am on some form of medication. As is obvious, we do not know one another. Making it plain to even the casual observer that you are full of sh/t. "Would not be the case if in fact the roles were reversed Daniel Jackson"–Teal'c

CMEs don't travel at light speed but gamma rays do. The gamma ray burst from this event would've arrived here about 8 minutes later as was indicated earlier. The plasma from the CME that will cause the aurora displays is still on its way. I would imagine that scientists were able to obtain an accurate velocity since they recorded the flare, so have no reason to doubt the Feb 15th prediction. At least it won't be another "carrington event"...

@lee in Tulsa...it is well known, that from the founding of the United States of America down until this very day, that the vast majority of citizens profess belief in God. It is not from googleling to find a number that suits my stance that I have arrived at this conclusion. It is a simple and well known fact...making one wonder: why would you yourself make it seem otherwise?

@Cesar...I am tired and have had a bizzy day, thanks to the US economy being stimulated not by our own government's economic stimulus packages, but by those of a foreign bank that directs the Federal Reserve/Central Banks located within our borders as well as those located elsewhere. (The Bank for International Settlements, who set oil prices and volumes for the entire planet, as well as bailing out economies to the tune of trillions, while individual governments do the same...only in billions) So, in a word, 'goodnight' Cesar...and say "howdy" to banasy, chrissy, Thomas D, and tomcat when you see them, if you would be, and are, so kind. (smile) PS: you 2 Sidewinder! (and any I failed to mention...like RUFFNUTT. he he)
