Congresswoman wants to end military's NASCAR sponsorships

A member of Congress wants to end the military's sponsorship of NASCAR race teams, saying it's a waste of taxpayers' money.

Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minnesota, is offering an amendment to the 2011 House budget bill to ban the sponsorships, which her office said has cost the military $100 million over the past 10 years, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The National Guard sponsors Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team, the Army sponsors Ryan Newman, and the Air Force sponsors AJ Allmendinger, according to

"I would challenge the Pentagon to give me one example of someone today in Iraq or Afghanistan who saw the Go Army car going around the racetrack and that's why they joined the Army," Bill Harper, McCollum's chief of staff, told "It may be the reason why they go to Home Depot but not necessarily Afghanistan."

McCollum is in her sixth term and serves on the House Appropriations and Budget committees.

"NASCAR fans are the kind of people who fight America's wars, which would put into question the wisdom of banning the military's ability to reach out to them," NASCAR spokesman Randy Poston said in the HamptonRoads report.

More than 400 amendments to the budget bill have been offered. To become part of the law, they must survive subcommittee and committee votes as well as passage by the full House and Senate, followed by the president's signature.

      Look sherei ww #1,
It will be an extreem challenge to penetrate the hazy intellect of a female, republican, truck driver. Especially before your first cigarette and coffee. But here goes; If you watched the super bowl, you would know we are a great country because we had Muhammad Ali (the greatest) and the moon landings.
Our president also wholeheartedly supported the overthrow of our ex puppet in Egypt. Issues of mysogeny notwithstanding this shows every country in the world granny can be thrown under the bus in the face of political expedience.
NASCAR, football and possibly hockey take the edge of the fact that we no longer do renditions. We instead have " neutralizations."
Why is this? Dead men tell no tales and have a difficult time hiring lawyers.

If we don't give it NASCAR then Obama and his crew will somehow find a way to give it to illegal immigrants or some socialist program that will only get him votes.

@thanks Guardwife,and@Rhona Lee~~Might want to rethink that sentence about Dale Jr! Whie I am proud of,and support many drivers, like Mark Martin,Jimmy J.and Jeff G.,Jeff Burton.and Tony S.,~ ~ ~ Dale a great person and you know, his dad won his biggest wins after 40+Dale Jr.won The Daytona 500 already, which took his dad most of his career, not to put him down at all. My youngest Standard Poodles name is"Mr.M~~~~ Black Diamond Dale Jr."and he is going to bring Dale Jr some Luck if I got any say about it,and millions of his fans would agree,so forget putting him down and NASCAR Down~The Money is well spent girl! It is one thing this Nation can still be proud of!

If you are a "real republican" then you should be against any type of goverment spending that s in any way shape, or form excessive spending. How do you justify this type of spending? Or are you a hypocrite and you support causes that are to the right. Anyone who is against this amendment is a hypocrite in my book!

Congresswoman it's called advertising, suppose while you are at it might as well end television advertising for the military as well. Gee, I wonder how much all of that TV time is costing the taxpayers? I have yet to meet someone that joined because they saw it on TV.The sponsor on my drivers car is a beer company, and I don't even drink. If you have ever watched a race every car is a billboard on wheels being watched by millions in a short period of time. The drivers with the military sponsors are very proud to have those names on their cars. Ten million a year is nothing compared to the wasted tax money our government spends on their pork belly projects.

Worry about the issues in Minn. Such as snow shovels and summertime pest control. Don't speak on something where you have no understanding. In other words, shut up and do your damn job !!!!!!!

we are suffering while we still send billions of dollars to help boost the economy of other nations!!! STOP SENDING ALL THESE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO OTHER NATIONS FOR 8 YEARS AND WE WILL PAY OUR DEBT!! STOP THIS NOW!! For example, we're sending 1.5 billion dollars to Egypt. There are other nations getting even more money!!

Weather you are a fan of nascar or not, bottom line is they are using our tax money, without mass aporoval, to sponsor this sport. That money could be put to better uses because it seems like there are more than enough sponsers to take their place with private contributions.

I was going to post alot of stuff about the budget and how the money for this year was most likely approved 3 to 4 years ago, etc,etc...but Jay's post really says it all...Our "congress/senate" works about 3 months out of a year, yet they take home well over $160,000/yr plus benefits, while passing laws that benefits only the people who give them the most money....what is going on here....our government is a joke.

While I'm not sure NASCAR sponsorship is a good idea, I refuse to agree with this woman until all of congress joins the social security program.

Wow!! And I thought this article was a bad idea, I would rather slap Army stickers on a race car than have it appropriated to any form of "organized religion" instead! Do you give 10% of your yearly salary to the church like they suggest? God hates you and your redneck face.
