Diver apparently killed by sharks

A longtime commercial diver apparently was killed by great white sharks Thursday off South Australia.

Peter Clarkson, a well-known abalone expert, was attacked by two sharks as he returned to the surface from a dive, boat captain Howard Rodd told authorities, according to the watersport site Swellnet.

Clarkson reportedly once provided a written testimonial for an electronic device called Shark Shield. However, it was not known whether he was using the device at the time of the attack, and the Shark Shield website had no testimonial with his name on it Friday.

Divers in the shark-filled waters off South Australia often use shark cages, but Clarkson was not in a cage when he was attacked, police Senior Sgt. Mick Walsh told Adelaide Now.

Clarkson was well-liked and respected in the diving community, reports said. He co-wrote a book on cowries, another type of sea snail.

"He was a fitness and health fanatic. He was a bit alternative but he was always a decent bloke," a friend told Adelaide Now.

The abalone trade is a $50 million annual industry in South Australia, according to Adelaide Now. Abalone are large mollusks whose flesh is used in cooking and medicine and whose shells are lined with mother-of-pearl.

Clarkson is the second diving partner Rodd has lost to sharks. In 2000, his boat overturned; he swam eight miles to shore while his companion, Danny Thorpe, clung to the boat, the Australian network ABC reported. The only traces of Thorpe ever found were a shredded life vest and a battered lunchbox.

Another sensationalist shark story by CNN. I do not see CNN covering the new anti shark fin bill in the California legislature or anything about how up to 100 million sharks are killed each year. The article is poorly written too–you assume this guy clinging to a boat was killed by a shark-he could have easily drowned.

Am I the only one who thinks being diving partners with boat captain Howard Rodd is a jinx. This makes two killed by a shark.

I just love how people think these are not dangerous animals. This story reminds me of shark week, they had a expert on there talking about sharks and how they are not aggressive when all of a sudden a bull shark tears of his right calf... Blood all over the water! it was insane! Sharks are dangerous PERIOD! Great Whites will eat you period.... I hope this guy is happy now. Wonder what his last thoughts were... Hmmmm Are they dangerous??

What is sweet about someone being eaten alive? What is ironic, when the article plainly stated the diver may not have been wearing his Shark Shield? And why are you such an ass?

What I find extra ironic about this is that some people are saying, "You guys are such moronic little kids, a dude died have some respect!". 73 MILLION sharks are killed for human consumption every year.....I don't mind if they get revenge once in a while.

Agreed. Here in California, there's a proposed state law [AB376] to ban the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins. Still, It's puzzling to me not to go down in a cage regardless.... Nature does not forgive carelessness.. I'm sad for the guy's family,,,

are you stupid buddy? its a shark its not a human being. Being humane means being compassionate about one another. except for you i guess. you are more interested in the sharks well being.

Counter-point – one human life is worth more than every vicious shark that has ever lived. Exterminate them all.

Since you love sharks so much, why don't you go hug one?

Ignorance is bliss, Will. I can think of more than a few humans I'd rather see off the planet. Rapists, murderers, lazy people living off the government, etc. Exterminating all sharks would wreak havoc with the most ecosystems, but that may be too much for you to fathom.

I will agree to what you say. We as humans think that we are the only reason this world was created and that we should come before any other living thing, but what you don't realize is that there is a whole universe that has a possibility of containing life and humans are nothing more than an atom in the scheme of things. I feel bad for the guys family, but did he really expect the sharks to say " ohh free meal... I think I'll pass..." Sharks have survived for hundreds of thousands of years because they are PREDATORS and humans should realize that we are NOT on top of the food chain. This was the guys job, and he screwed up big time. If the guy from the power company was stupid enough to not wear his gloves and grab a powerline and electrocute himself... would you say that the whole world should live without electricity because it claimed a human life. No? Well then you should know that electricity kills way more people a year than sharks!

Revenge? Maybe that would make sense on some level if they had killed a shark poacher. They killed one of the good guys, a marine researcher who was probably always going around saying, "Save the sharks!" prior to his death.

It wasn't revenge, it was a killing by an animal with no conception of good or evil, just hunger and instinct.

I agree...so a diver was killed....the vast number os sharks mercilessly killed for shark fin soup....and other "delicacies" dont care if a diver of two or ten or hundred get eaten in the process...
