I experienced the earthquake, believe me it was way worse then the 7.1 we had back in September. My brother was out in Town and has footage, it's is really bad. Worst earthquake so far.

6.3 but very shallow and centered in the middle of town. Watching live news NZ. A lot of injuries and there will be deaths

So lightening can strike twice...what is going on here?

Who equates lightning to earthquakes? It's sadly not surprising that this happened again. The plates are shifting. The earth moves. Mountains form and on and on. This is literally how the world works.

My heart goes out to everyone affected.

It's was my understanding that the strangeness about new Zealand that there are no plates or faults located in this area...I may be wrong! Lightening strikes twice refers to the rarity with the same place and so soon

The fault line between the Pacific plate and Austrailian plate literally goes right through New Zealand. In the time you wrote your post you probably could have figured that out with a google search.

Only 6.3 in magnitude but around 3 miles (5km) below the suface... so there was plenty of destruction throughout the city. Aftershocks are still being felt and will continue for a while. People trapped inside crushed cars, scene of a young boy pulled out of rubble looking lifeless, multi-story carparks filled up with cars and completely flattened, etc. The level of destruction almost looks like something a 7 or 8 magnitude would cause.

The historic church in Cathedral Square has been destroyed. Two city buses filled with commuters have been flattened by falling buildings and dozens of people are being pulled from the rubble. Cars flattened everywhere and streets lined with fallen facades, powerlines. Reports now of another powerful aftershock have just come in.

The city have run out of ambulances so wagons, 4x4s, buses, utility vehicles... anything they can their hands on is being used to rush the injured and critical to the hospitals. Lots of screams, shouts and yelling coming from within many collapsed offices and buildings. This could turn out to be one of New Zealand's worst quakes yet 😦
