Call it the "tale of two states." Protests in Wisconsin against Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget cuts continue today, but teachers in another U.S. school district are taking a different approach.
Educators in one New York school district are being applauded by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for agreeing to a one-year salary freeze - even though they were due a pay raise - to make up for state budget shortfalls during tough economic times. With the pay freeze, the district can keep class sizes small and half as many teachers will lose their jobs.
Monday on "American Morning," T.J. Holmes spoke with John Christian, math teacher and president of the West Genesee Teachers Association, and Chris Brown, the West Genesee School District superintendent. He asked why their school district was able to come to a compromise where others haven't.
I'D rather have a pay freeze then being walked out the door..
New York talked to the teachers, Wisconsin didn't. New York didn't take away the teachers right to bargain away from them, Wisconsin did- not just teachers, but all public employees. That's the difference.
Wow. In Georgoia there has been a pay has been frozen for three years (although they did raise health insurance cost in each of those three years). But bookfinder is right this is not just about money.
And how about North Syracuse? They did this weeks ago! And Liverpool? Sorry, I just don't accept your rationale.
wow im impressed! Way to go new york!
What a brain-dead article.
It's all about collective bargaining rights. The NY teachers didn't lose that, the Wisconsin teachers did.
I'm impressed that cnn hires the mentally impaired, but I wish you'd find them a better job than writing these type of articles.
Call it anything you want, CNN, but comparing Wisconsin's situation with N.Y.'S situation is comparing cheese to apples. Different altogether (although a piece of cheddar does go well with a slice of apple pie!)
