Wisconsin state police sent to absent lawmakers' homes

Wisconsin state police were dispatched to the homes of several Democrat state senators in an effort to compel them to return to the legislature, said Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Olson.

Fourteen Senate Democrats fled to neighboring Illinois to prevent a quorum from voting on a budget repair bill that would curb the collective bargaining rights of public sector workers and raise their contributions to pensions and health insurance plans.

Meanwhile, a separate but nearly identical budget bill is up for debate in Wisconsin's other chamber, the state assembly. The assembly lawmakers are poised to vote on the bill Thursday.

The state faces a Friday deadline to balance the budget. Wisconsin faces a $137 million budget shortfall by June 30 and a $3.6 billion gap by 2013.

Mrs Sippy it is not running but protesting that Gov. Scott will not negotiate. The pretend Koch Bro. Called Scott and last I heard he was trying (on tape) to get rid of the unions and collective bargaining. Like getting caught with your foot in your mouth.

It's not about running from responsibility. It's about protecting the working class from chickenhawks like Walker. I hope they recall that terrible excuse for a governor.

  5. Big Issue

Nobody is talking about the bigger issue. This is the right wing big business power grab we new was coming when the Koch brother backed Tea Party candidates got into office. There's even a part of this bill that sells the WI power companies with a no-bid deal to the Koch brothers.
Wake up, they own us. The rules and profits will get better for them and the environment, pay, and working conditions will get worse for us until we stand up against the big money contributions allowed in our government.

Isn't this kind of a misuse of taxpayer to send the police out? The police0are exempt...for now. I hope this strong-arm tactic shows Wisconsin just how base their elected officials really are, and vote accordingly.

All i have to say is wisconsin voters remember these times and how your reps are showing they will stand up for you and your rights and think about this the next time the ballot comes around. Must be nice to get paid and go to work whenever you want.

These people should be arrested for theft! They are paid a salary by tax payers and refuse to go to work. That is theft plain and simple.

I'm a programmed brainwashed tool who still recites quotes from 1963 to justify my political biases. Who needs rational thinking when you've got a 50 year old sound byte? You'll all notice I don't ever compromise or try to see the middle ground on anything, but I only do that to get a rise out of people. Here's my real opinion: If the budget is in crisis then all sectors of state government should be trimmed including legislative pay. I think targeting one or two groups is wrong. I also think it's not the government's place to dictate unions in the private sector, because I believe in limited government intervention in a free market capitalist society. 🙂 Vote Independent 2012!!

  15. mrs sippy's alter ego

You'll notice that mrs sippy doesn't really have a independent thought in its head, so it will just contradict everything you say. You'll also notice that when it says to vote independent in 2012, it will really be sitting home on it's fat but and collecting its food stamps and getting its cold water walk up paid for by section 8. Therefore anything it says is pretty much null and void because it contradicts itself all the time. It is also wasting our air and needs to just fall down and never get up.
