2 reported killed on U.S. military bus at German airport

[Update 1:40 p.m. ET] President Barack Obama said Wednesday he was "saddened and outraged" by an attack in Germany that killed two Americans and wounded two others. "We will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous attack took place," Obama said, adding that American officials are working with German authorities to investigate.

[Update 11:19 a.m. ET] Two people were shot and killed Wednesday in an incident involving a U.S. military bus at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, a police spokesman said.

Another person is severely wounded, Juergen Linker told CNN, and one person is in custody.

A U.S. military official said initial reports were that two people had been killed, including the driver of the bus.

It is not clear if the driver was German or American, or military or civilian.

Two others are wounded, said the source, who is not authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

The troops killed and injured are U.S. Air Force airmen from Lakenheath base in the United Kingdom, the U.S. official said, emphasizing that the information was only preliminary.

They were security forces on their way to a deployment, the source said, without saying specifically where they were heading.

They were flying commercial, not on a military plane, according to the source.

It's believed the German police have a young Kosovo national in custody, the U.S. official said.

The U.S. military base at Ramstein in Germany regularly runs shuttles to Frankfurt for commercial flights.

[Update 10:52 a.m. ET] Two people were shot and killed Wednesday in an incident involving a U.S. military bus at Frankfurt airport in Germany, a police spokesman said.

Another person is severely wounded, Juergen Linker told CNN, and one person is in custody.

The U.S. military did not immediately comment on the incident.

[Original post, 10:47 a.m. ET] Two U.S. soldiers were shot and killed Wednesday at Frankfurt airport, Germany's busiest airport, a police spokesman said.

There were conflicting reports as to whether the shooting took place inside a terminal or aboard a shuttle bus.

Will somebody here kindly tell me from whom are the Americans protecting the Germans, from themselves??? Germany no longer has any enemies to speak of,so thus arises the question.

NATO was bombarding Serbia back in 1999 killing thousands of innocent people; protecting Drug War criminals and Albanian Muslims.

This is a thanks for that. USA made Sadam, Bin Laden, Kosovo and all other problems in world.

So sad for lost lives, but so happy for everything is happening to the New Rome of USA

Yeah most germans are thannkful for the military bases there why? Cause its created a lot of jobs! Most towns around the bases survive because of them! The ignorance of some people!

Are you trying to say sarah, that Germany is such a poor country that it cannot man it's own bases and pay it's own help??? I find that to be quite dubious!

If democracy requires an educated, thinking electorate in order to survive and function, some of the comments here and on similar "comment blogs" around the internet provide strong and on-going evidence that true democracy in North America is in desperate trouble. The "dumbing down" of North America must be close to completion.

Never in history has American soldier been killed by Serbs. In fact they saved 512 US Pilots in II World War in
    Operation Halyard

To Joey: Yes, Joey, Canada copies everything American....like Degrassi Street, a world acclaimed Canadian show that plays constantly all over American tv daily. We have no Canadian stars, ...hmmm other than Canadian born Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Kiefer and Donald Sutherland, Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy star), William Shatner of Star Trek & much other fame, Dan Rather, Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Drake, Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Anne Murray, K D Laing, Then, there's Keanu Reeves (born in Lebanon but grew up in Toronto), Matthew Perry (born in USA but grew up in Ottawa, Ontario), Lorne Greene, and many others....from a country with about 1/15th the population the USA has...but you're right. Doh! Daylight Savings time was chosen my a ton of countries for reasons that had nil to do with USA choosing it. Omg. As to being cowards, you epitomize ignorance and arrogance....guess you aren't aware of the fact Canadian soldiers were among the first to join BOTH World Wars (without first being attacked), to join the US in Afghanistan where they remain and continue to be killed regularly ...oh and those WW2 battles such as Vimy Ridge, Dieppe, etc where Canadian soldiers played a prominent role. I could cite desparaging facts about US, but that would make me as truly ignorant and as bigotted as you. Dumb? That would be a charitable description of you, but I love my American family, wife, friends, and neighbours because the overwhelming majority are not at all as ignorant and hateful as you are. Joey's vitriol is a symptom of a clearly disturbed person, but nationality has nothing to do with someone being a bigot, a hater, or entirely ignorant of facts. Accordingly, My condolences to those lost and their families today. Finally, God Bless America, Canada, Germany....the world. May we some day live in peace...my prayer. Meanwhile, get help, Joey.

Wait, so we wouldn't still be spending that budget on our troops if they were stationed in the U.S.? So should we cut our military in half as well? How many of you that complain about the military budget have actually served? Until you have you shouldn't complain about the impacts you believe this has on you. Having troops in other countries allows for a quicker deployment of our assets when the need arises. Having troops in other countries allows for us to work with those countries to form a positive relationship with those host countries. Each person that serves knows the risks, understands they may die, even in a situation as out of place as this. It's not a perfect system, but what do you believe it would have been like if we had abandoned those countries after the wars? This guy could have killed American troops here on U.S. soil just as well as anywhere else.

Since we are THE ONLY country that other Nations come to for assistance with external problems and other issues. For all of you that keep belittling or sounding off about the US and America's military forces in all the various parts of the World, as occupiers. That those countries where we have our military men and women, be thankful for the freedoms you have to knock them. While you may make a few bucks at a job you may or may not like. These men and women work for another reason and it is not dollars and pennies. If Corporate CEO's and all the others in the food chain would take major cuts to their out of touch with reality salaries, we all might find the World a much safer place. Until then we have upheaval because it is in everyone's best interest to have regions STABLE. Otherwise, we would have unrest the likes of which more than half of you commenting here today have never seen or heard of because you're too young to know what is like to fight for what you want. THINK about that the next time you spout off without first educating yourself to writing.

Look at the shuttle bus it obvious it was a military shuttle it those standard military buses. Why don't we buy some transportation that doesn't look military? Look at the video of the bus it's a military bus. God bless those Soldiers,Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardmen that have made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the families that will mourn today.
