Mexican authorities deny reports that border state's female police chief fled

[Updated at 4:03 p.m. ET] A spokesman for the attorney general of Chihuahua State denied reports Friday that Marisol Valles Garcia - the 20-year-old woman who made headlines when she became the police chief of Praxedis, Mexico - has left the country for the United States.

Spokesman Arturo Sandoval was referring to comments in El Diario newspaper attributed to Jorge Gonzalez Nicolas, the attorney general for the northern district of Chihuahua.

"He did not give a press conference," Sandoval told CNN. "We negate reports that Nicolas said she fled to the United States."

[Posted at 2:51 p.m. ET] Marisol Valles Garcia, the 20-year-old woman who made headlines when she became the sheriff of Praxedis, Mexico, has left the country for the United States, the attorney general of Chihuahua State told reporters Friday.

Valles Garcia, a criminology student, was the only person who accepted the job of police chief in the city whose police officers had been abducted and killed.

She is reportedly seeking asylum in the United States after receiving death threats, CNN affiliate KVIA said, citing Mexican media reports.

Valles Garcia accepted the job in October. At the time, she said she was tired of everyone being afraid.

She recruited three other women to join the unarmed, 13-member force in the small municipality of 8,500 people, the government-run Notimex news agency reported. She said the force would employ non-violent tactics with the goals of winning back security in public spaces and fostering greater cooperation among neighbors so they can form watch committees.

"The weapons we have are principles and values, which are the best weapons for prevention," she told CNN en Español. "Our work will be pure prevention. We are not going to be doing anything else other than prevention."

- CNN's Arthur Brice and Nick Valencia contributed to this report.

There's actually a place called Chihuahua State in Mexico? That's like if we renamed New York to Border Collie State.

Um, the dog breed Chihuahua was named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, not the other way around.

Alas these problems WILL continue until the united states real government, the american bar association, surrenders their drug war cash cow and actually obeys the will of the people. Americans want to do drugs period. People are going to continue die, police and agents WILL be beheaded and all of this make no mistake for one reason and one reason alone... So that the associated legal professions live wealthy and retire millionaires obey the will of the people, allow legitimate corporations to take over and the violence will stop until then expect more heads in boxes

Stuff like this makes me think, we should be in Mexico with our military, not Iraq. Want to stop illegal immigration? Help our neighbors get their country squared away. This is just sad.

Squared away how exactly? under the control of our grotesquely mutated legal system a frankenstein monster social parasite that forces every aspect of society to be filtered through it? You do realize the american bar association is in control of all 3 branches of govt right? You do realize that for several decades they have allowed their business and commercial considerations to influence the crafting of legislation and have in essence turned all state governments into a turnkey business for their profession? That kind of squared away? oh great our legal system is in an illegitimate state and you wanna foist that off on someone else...

A military action like the one in Iraq will never happen in Mexico. People might as well just get that idea out of their heads.

He wants to give them billions of $$ and I'll be darned if he doesn't want them to sneak over to your neighborhood and set up shop for their kids to get rich off of selling their dope to YOUR kids. Might as well laugh about it... because- IT IS TRUE!

It was brave of her (or stupid) to take that job, but I knew a day with come when she either quit or was killed. Too many cities like that in Mexico is ruled by the drug lords, but their country is too corrupt to do anything about it. The War on Drugs is just another ploy for Mexico to get our money for "aid". Sheesh, wake up everyone. USA is too weak on our tactics in this "drug war". It's time to just carpet bomb that city to get rid of all the drug vermin there.

Just legalize drugs already. The drug traffickers will run out of money to spend on guns and private armies.
